There's one reasonably good shop around the corner from Manneken Pis: You won't find *exactly* what you're looking for - the selection is not that great - but you can find really cheap things. (Like the V3 I found for about 4 euros!)

nathalie (nathalie), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 10:09 (twenty-two years ago)

i'd like to go

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 10:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Vive La Fete are Belgian.

Llahtuos Kcin (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 10:41 (twenty-two years ago)

cheers for the advice.

I've discovered that the Darkness are playing at the Ancien Belgique - unfortunately, on the day I come back to England!

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 10:44 (twenty-two years ago)

a lucky escape there then

chris (chris), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 10:44 (twenty-two years ago)

it might have been fun.

REVIVE!

I'm going to Brussels/Bruxelles for a long weekend this fri-sun - any top tips? any bands on? any decent clubs on? any nice restaurants anyone can especially reccommend?

all assistance welcomed! ta/danke/merci/can't speak flemish...

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 09:36 (twenty years ago)

sorry for not replying earlier! baby's keeping me busy. not sure i can give tips... i live in bruges. :-( but maybe check out abconcerts.be (ancien belgique).

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 10:30 (twenty years ago)

don't go to the bar with the festering stuffed horse. it's enough to put you off your kwak.

mason storm (mason storm), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 11:00 (twenty years ago)

i'll bear it in mind...

looks like we'll be heading for the ABBox/ABClub thenn!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 13:06 (twenty years ago)

What gig will you attend, Charlie? I'm jealous: no gigs for me in the near future. BOOHOO. :-)

Do check out that record store I mentioned in this thread - the one near the Manneken Pies. You have to have an open mind, not intent to really find what you're looking for, but you will find some great records for ridicously low prices.

(Christ, my English is going down the drain due to sleep deprivation.)

The Atomium is reopening!

"...AND FOUR YOU CATCH THE MAN."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 9 February 2006 21:19 (twenty years ago)

Can I get a WOO-HOOO!?

Baaderonixx, born again in Xixax (baaderonixx), Friday, 10 February 2006 08:58 (twenty years ago)

One you lock the target.
Two you bait the line.
Three you slowly spread the net
And four you catch the man!

Can you believe I only recently learned the lyrics of this song? I'm such a loser. :-)

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Friday, 10 February 2006 10:10 (twenty years ago)

And next month is the super-duper 25th anniversary of Front 242!

Baaderonixx, born again in Xixax (baaderonixx), Friday, 10 February 2006 10:14 (twenty years ago)

belgium was weird. why does nobody know how to queue? rude freaks.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 10 February 2006 11:27 (twenty years ago)

Heh, Charlie, are you sure it were Belgians? We do queue. Here in Bruges at least.

What else was weird?

Ah yes, that Front 242 reunion. DIdn't one of the guys in DeadManRay and Kiss My Jazz , Elko, play with'em?

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Friday, 10 February 2006 11:38 (twenty years ago)

definitely belgians. about 200 of them ,outside a club, all shoving and pushing and squeezing their way forwards, trying to get through one tiny entrance, despite the fact that the boucer had already said "it's sold out! go home!" very odd.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 10 February 2006 11:48 (twenty years ago)

oh at the ab club? yeah i know what you mean... we dont really queue at club entrances. :-)

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Friday, 10 February 2006 12:13 (twenty years ago)

Hah - I had EXACTLY that experience last saturday, queuing to see ADULT. at Recyclart in Brussels

Baaderonixx, born again in Xixax (baaderonixx), Friday, 10 February 2006 13:52 (twenty years ago)

you were there? that's where i was! couldn't get in for love nor money but the scrum of people was ridiculous anyway...we waited 20 minutes then gave up and went to see tiga instead...and were faced with the exact same scenario, only with poncey club kids instead of smelly crusties!

i guess they must have been the only two decent events on that night, in the whole city. poor buggers.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 10 February 2006 13:54 (twenty years ago)

Anyway, I like me the country o' Belgium, and would like to return one day. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 February 2006 13:55 (twenty years ago)

Aww, that's a shame, it was a really crazy show and night overall. Did they tell you it was full? We had to "queue" for 20 minutes, but in the end all was fine (esp. when they opened a second foor). I think the door organisation was more to blame than the kids, really.

Baaderonixx, born again in Xixax (baaderonixx), Friday, 10 February 2006 14:14 (twenty years ago)

Tintin, beer, Lugubrum, Audiobot...

Also, that weird Belgian game where you count the number of times a caged bird will sing, marking each instance with a notch on a stick.

Mestema (davidcorp), Friday, 10 February 2006 14:42 (twenty years ago)

OTM.

What negative list? I never mentioned anything bad, aside from the fact that some think it's boring. :-)

Also, that weird Belgian game where you count the number of times a caged bird will sing, marking each instance with a notch on a stick.

This isn't done in other countries? I never realized this!

Stan, am still awaiting reply from Stubru.uit. I really badly would like to attend but... I ph34r it'll be a no-go. :-(

this is a really good belgian thing:

http://www.hasselt.be//upload/pics//gratis_bussen_aa002.jpg

now, you might think that oh, its a standard belgian bus run by de lijn. but look at the departure blind - hasselt.

since hasselt has been runnning a scheme called gratis stadsbus

guess what that means! its awesome!!!!

ambrose (ambrose), Saturday, 11 February 2006 00:02 (twenty years ago)

free...standing bus?

Lil' Eno (nordicskilla), Saturday, 11 February 2006 00:04 (twenty years ago)

Belgium stands for multiple wonders:

Beer

Drugs

Small cars that look like shit and go like stink

Massive airports

Plenty highways like the "a10" the final exit of the E40 to Oostende not many ppl kno it but ppl go full out on that 22 km highway with no cops cameras or anything like that but, if youre lucky and fast enough, u can impress the chick on the train. The track stays next to the road for 5 km, plenty of time for some massive "representation" of power.

And last but not least

Drivers who KICK ASS!!! i was in germany a few weeks ago and my dad was doing about 220 kmh and i felt good in our 2001 bmw m5 with 400 horse stock v8. until maybe a pack of belgian in subis, crx's mitsu colts, peugeuot 406's and various other car including lancia delta integrales and Rover turbo's. We tried but we could not keep up at 296kmh and over, CHAPEAU, HAT OFF

BELGIAN RESPECT!!!

one month passes...
Revive, because I am going to Brussels for three months from July.

I'm trying to find a cheap room to let and I'm emailing a woman about one in Etterbeek near the Petillon metro station. Does anyone know anything about that area?

Cathy (Cathy), Thursday, 6 April 2006 10:08 (twenty years ago)

No, sadly not. So I'll just post a message to revive the thread.

So what are you going to do in Brussels for three months? :-)

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Thursday, 6 April 2006 11:14 (twenty years ago)

I'm doing an internship at an NGO and re-learning French.

Does the Brussels metro stay open late, do you know?

Cathy (Cathy), Thursday, 6 April 2006 13:17 (twenty years ago)

Linking there is forbidden, the MIVB (metro company) says, but this is the schedule for the Petillon station.

In case it doesn't work: about 5AM to about midnight. It's on line 1A, which is one of the biggest lines in Brussels.

(Annoyingly, that MIVB site is only in French and Dutch.)

StanM (StanM), Thursday, 6 April 2006 13:32 (twenty years ago)

Ooh, thank you very much. Well, seeing as I don't know the address of where I'll be working or studying yet, it seems quite safe to just find somewhere by a metro station.

I am so excited!

Cathy (Cathy), Thursday, 6 April 2006 13:42 (twenty years ago)

If you're going to stay near the Petillon metro station: this is the artwork there: "Que la mer épargne" by Jules Lismonde (1976).

http://www.stib.irisnet.be/artKunst/images-groot/petillon.JPG

:-)

(I don't know much about Brussels, to be honest. I can find the Ancienne Belgique by car, but one roadblock and I'm lost. So I'm afraid I can't help you with the region around Etterbeek.) (I'll gladly google stuff for you, so ask away anyway)

StanM (StanM), Thursday, 6 April 2006 13:44 (twenty years ago)

I never found any of this stuff when I was googling, thanks.

This thread makes me want to go to Belgium right now.
