i don't even think lot b is single barrel, i think it's just the best barrels of 12 year old weller blended and bottled. the general shortage of older weller and the fact that they can divert the existing supply to the more desirable van winkle label means weller 12 is going to be an endangered species for quite a long time.

two weeks pass...

picked up a bottle of four roses limited edition single barrel 2014--pretty excited since the 2012 edition was possibly my favorite bourbon ever. the price has certainly gone up.

ryan, Monday, 8 December 2014 19:31 (eleven years ago)

I've had an easier time getting Pappy than any of the 4R limited editions.

I also picked up Hillrock's solera aged bourbon. it's quite interesting. a bit rough around the edges but I quite like it. excited to see what they'll be doing in 6 years or so.

^^^

Drinking some scrounged Highland Park right now, it's not bad at all.

ticket to rmde (seandalai), Thursday, 25 December 2014 03:35 (eleven years ago)

isn't every bottom-shelf "whiskey" that was "aged" for 24 hours post-fermentation and then had caramel coloring added really a white whiskey

valleys of your mind (mh), Thursday, 25 December 2014 03:39 (eleven years ago)

"moonshine" aka cheap swill rushed to market as something else to avoid the aging process and start raking in dough with minimal effort.

Had some Booker's 25 last night, which was good enough that I wish I bought a bottle when I could.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 25 December 2014 19:26 (eleven years ago)

I tried the Dickel white whiskey in a bar because I was curious. It was alright but I don't think I'd buy it again.

Bulleit 10 Year is... not all that impressive

However, buying it on clearance at Target for about fifty cents less than normal Bulleit is good!

Ha, that's one way to do it.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 18 November 2015 17:43 (ten years ago)

I made it down there in time last year, not lookin' likely this year

pratt truss it (dan m), Wednesday, 18 November 2015 17:43 (ten years ago)

I could do it, in theory, but that tweet is already 2 hours old, isn't it?

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 18 November 2015 17:47 (ten years ago)

yeah, but they don't start until 6 and there's only one favorite so far

pratt truss it (dan m), Wednesday, 18 November 2015 17:51 (ten years ago)

iirc last year I saw the tweet while I was in class, ended up making it down there about an hour later and they still had a couple bottles

they jack the prices up though

call all destroyer, Thursday, 4 February 2016 01:35 (ten years ago)

my favorite kind is bourbon but rn i am drinking scotch

starkiller based god (Treeship), Thursday, 4 February 2016 01:39 (ten years ago)

i'm trying to turn myself into a scotch person, there's so much more scotch to try and the bourbon scene is full of basic bottles and ripoffs these days

call all destroyer, Thursday, 4 February 2016 01:42 (ten years ago)

imo the problem with scotch in north america (or bourbon abroad) is the import/scarcity price difference

μpright mammal (mh), Thursday, 4 February 2016 01:53 (ten years ago)

i don't think i'll ever prefer scotch tbh, but it's good to mix it up.

this shit is my jam always and forever. i like how it is in a genie bottle. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Willett_Pot_Still_Reserve

My wife bought a pint of OGD BIB 100 with the intent of making hot toddies and the didn't drink it... It's been a while but it's still really good.

pratt truss it (dan m), Thursday, 4 February 2016 02:48 (ten years ago)

that's a great mixing bourbon, i don't use anything else for juleps

Have you tried the Willett 2-years coming out of their new distillery? Shockingly good for a whiskey that young.

controversial but fabulous (I DIED), Thursday, 4 February 2016 05:18 (ten years ago)

Said it before on the bourbon thread, but Evan Williams Black is a good cheaper substitute for Jack Daniels if you are going to mix it with coke. I always got a couple bottles of Evan Williams bourbon around either the black, white (which is Bottled in Bond) or the 1783 which is my current favorite.

I know Churchill Downs switched to using Old Forester from Early Times for the Juleps at the track.

Drank a bit of Very Old Barton for the first time last weekend at band practice. It's pretty mellow tasting stuff. Not bad.

I'll need to look up that Willett. It's mind boggling how many different labels are out there.

earlnash, Thursday, 4 February 2016 05:32 (ten years ago)

Old Crow?!? Blecch

lute bro (brimstead), Thursday, 4 February 2016 06:39 (ten years ago)

Old Crow is, probably literally, Jim Beam they wasn't aging right so they pulled the barrels early

μpright mammal (mh), Thursday, 4 February 2016 13:29 (ten years ago)

I have the good fortune of having several good to great liquor stores in my immediate area. But yeah, the generally available stuff is pretty consistently average.

That being said, I have a lot of love for the Beam high proof bottles - Bookers and Bakers. I can always find them, even if I don't want to spend the $55 - $65 to buy them. I have also really come to appreciate Bulleit 10 yr. It really opens up, and has some really great spice. They have it at Trader Joe's all the time.

Hydroelectric New Deal Demiurge (B.L.A.M.), Thursday, 4 February 2016 14:30 (ten years ago)

Really? I've had Bulleit 10 year and kind of found it overpriced and not really remarkable. I bought it at Target when it went on clearance for some reason for $28. It was a good deal at that price.
