John Malkovich lives in France, I believe
let's get you back in time to '77 to produce SNL so Jan-Michael Vincent can host instead of Broderick Crawford.

he'd won a few awards and been in a bunch of 'big' films -- Jarhead, Kinsey, Shattered Glass etc -- plus he can also act and be funny, so yeah, why the fuck wd SNL need that in a host?

had supporting roles in several movies everyone forgot existed and had two talents lorne's never cared about
hutcherson's got a billion dollar franchise behind him u nerd

I dunno Lorne musta signed off on Maureen Stapleton hosting in spring '79 (and she hadn't even won her Oscar yet)

Yeah, but she was already pretty famous from All In The Family.

Buck Henry hosted eight times in the first five seasons; I think SNL's hosting criteria were a bit looser in the 70s (unless Henry, as a performer, was box-office gold in those days and its been erased from history).

Drat.
― i only wanted freidn (Old Lunch), Monday, 10 November 2014 20:32 (nine years ago) link
(Buck Henry was Oscar nominated for co-directing Heaven Can Wait in that period, but yes, that had nothing to do with anything. Also he was willing to play the "funny uncle" in the recurring pedophile sketch.)
― things lose meaning over time (Dr Morbius), Monday, 10 November 2014 20:34 (nine years ago) link
You're never gonna see a Josh Hutcherson displaying that level of commitment to the show.

oh i dunno, i could see creepy sketches and character acting in his future

even for their "love that guy - he's got a week off, doesn't need a hotel room" slow week choices like malkovich, norton, buscemi etc saars is pretty low profile, though
Do they still put them up at the Omni? Forgot how they used to roll that promo at 11:55 each week.

"thanks to mystikal" -- cameron diaz on SNL in 2014
― J0rdan S., Sunday, 23 November 2014 06:02 (nine years ago) link
Decent episode. I'm as surprised as anyone else, but the Mick Ronson performances were my favorite parts. I'd see that concert.
Also, "Bill Cosby, pull YOUR pants up."

kenan was so much funnier than anyone else on this episode, that bizaroo brian fellows skit was great
― J0rdan S., Sunday, 23 November 2014 06:33 (nine years ago) link
kenan's deadpanning has been so on point this season
My favorite Kenan face tonight was when Diaz was reading her UPS Man poem.
― Johnny Fever, Sunday, 23 November 2014 06:35 (nine years ago) link
Also, Pete Davidson is going to waste while Kyle Mooney gets to do his 4,619th awkward teen bro filmed bit.
― Johnny Fever, Sunday, 23 November 2014 06:36 (nine years ago) link
i thought that bit was funny tonight but when davidson was in that one sketch i was like "oh right he's on this show"
― J0rdan S., Sunday, 23 November 2014 06:42 (nine years ago) link
This first Mars/Ronson song is sounding like leftover Morris Day & The Time, which I actually mean as a compliment.

I have a serious crush on Vanessa Bayer. Every time she's on I have this stupid grin on my face. Can't even tell if she's funny anymore.

I'm pretty much always happy to see the ex-porn stars sketch but this could be the last time and that would be fine with me.
Kinda wish Nicki had done, like, good songs. And that first one that rhymed "lie" three times, yikes.

yea bed of lies is awful
― johnny crunch, Sunday, 7 December 2014 14:27 (nine years ago) link
i seem to remember that the ex-porn stars sketch used to not be about sex but just dim people mispronouncing things terribly and generally failing at class aspirations. now it seems to increasingly about dirty puns.
― celfie tucker 48 (s.clover), Monday, 8 December 2014 03:41 (nine years ago) link
Well there was always that weird sexual element ("One time my eye got sucked out by a butt!") but it's definitely getting a little cruder with every iteration. I had actually heard that the sketch was officially retired.
BTW I didn't see Spring Breakers, but I'm wondering - was Franco's character pretty much his imitation of RiFF RaFF? Because that was fucking terrible. Like he had never seen or heard the dude. Even coming before Kenan's low-effort Rick Ross.

someone told me that kenan has now done more impersonations than darrell hammond? anyone else hear this? is it upthread and i'm a dummy?
apparently he's done 108 celebrity impressions now

just curious if SNL has touched Ferguson or Staten Island in the last few weeks, or if it's all still impressions of celebrities unknown to me

not all that surprising as hammond was never the only white person on the show iirc

he is great in Spring Breakers, which is def worth watching if you dig Harmony Korine. idk what was going on w Franco's shitty Riff Raff impression on SNL

just curious if SNL has touched Ferguson or Staten Island in the last few week
they opened with it this week
I didn't see it, but read someone tweet they thought the opening was tone-deaf because that person thought the skit only made fun of Al Sharpton
― curmudgeon, Monday, 8 December 2014 17:21 (nine years ago) link
I didn't think it was a particularly good sketch - the big jokes seemed to be mispronunciations
― Οὖτις, Monday, 8 December 2014 17:24 (nine years ago) link
That's the key feature of Kenan's Sharpton impersonation.
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 8 December 2014 17:27 (nine years ago) link
it wasn't the only target, but the laugh lines about the incredulity of the Eric Garner case fell really, really flat, so it turned into the audience only laughing at the mispronunciations.
