lots of trail races around here, tempted to do my first next spring. main challenge is a recurring left leg problem, it just sort of stops working a few miles in every time, no pain or cramps or anything, starts turning into floppy unresponsive dead weight, frustrating.

sounds like weird thing. trapped nerve?

lag∞n, I guess I'm sorta doing that. For the last few years I've been going to the gym a few times a week, plus running a decent amount. As far as squats & deadlifts & running goes — when I started doing those exercises, I found I got a good deal better at handling uphill running.
These days I try to lift three times a week, take a short pilates class once in a while, and go running, uh, when I feel like it. I don't do a lot of speedwork, preferring > 10 k jogs. According to Endomondo I've yet to run 10K in less than 50 minutes. I never compete in anything and have no interest in racing.
It is ... well, it's hard to find the time, really. Squatting three times a week isn't all that conducive to running regularly, for obvious reasons. It occasionally feels like I'm either neglecting my running or my lifting, so the balance tips a bit back and forth, depending on what is most fun or what I most want to improve that month.
I'm not particularly good at either, in other words, but I feel quite fit and have a pretty good time with it. Whenever I take a break from either, I start to miss it.

just about to run home through the woods in the dark, always freaks me out no matter how many times i've done it before. i'm as atheist as they come but put me alone in the woods at night when it's a bit misty and all you can see is blackness and tree trunks and your own breath in the light of your headtorch and i tell you - ghosts, werewolves, demons, goblins, whatever, they're all out there somewhere

ive been ~doing runs 2x a week and strength/hill intervals/plyo 2x, tho i just work with what i have at home as far as the strength stuff so its not really any heavy weights, i do pullups/chinups and various dumbbell lifts up to 60lbs (2x30) i and kettle belll swings too, wld prob be cool to join a gym and do some heavier lifts tho, but i also want to do some more milage as im starting to round into form after being pretty out of shape idk
― lag∞n, Thursday, 6 November 2014 18:06 (eleven years ago)
ive seen a marathon training schedule that had a bunch of strength stuff in it particularly aimed at improving running ablities seemed pretty cool
Do y'all experience a lot of difficulty in super cold weather? I'll be using the school gym but I don't want to rely solely on the treadmill for training...
― Simon H., Thursday, 6 November 2014 18:12 (eleven years ago)
i run in super cold and its never bothered me i know some people have a hard time breathing idk
― lag∞n, Thursday, 6 November 2014 18:13 (eleven years ago)

xps i was def exaggerating a bit i think it's probably just a weak / overcompensating muscle related to a weird way my foot is landing idk.
oystein i feel that post, hard to find the time to get deep into running with a 3x/week lifting schedule. putting on mass, getting used to breathing a lot more, getting your core up to speed, more recovery time, etc. such a rush when you feel like you're going uphill and downhill at the same clip like the terminator tho. i always miss lifting when i stop but its such a commitment idk.
that book looks good ty

I have that Anatomy for Runners book, but haven't looked at it in awhile.

My coach usually puts two strength workouts a week on my schedule. I've never done a single one. It's mostly body weight stuff that you don't need a gym for. But they take too much time that I don't have. Examples:
Myrtl Hip Routine:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2GLrKr54yA0ClamsLateral leg raiseDonkey kicksDonkey whipsFire hydrantKnee circle, forwardKnee circle, backwardsHurdle trail leg, forwardHurdle trail leg, backwardsLateral leg swingLinear leg swingLinear leg swing, knee bent
Strength routine:Complete as many rounds of the following as you wish, focusing on good form:deep squat, halfway up, deep squat, all the way up x 15narrow to wide exchange pushups x 10v-ups with a hug x 10low bridge and hold x 30 secondsSpiderman walks x 10 stepshigh and low exchange pushups x 10windshield wipers legs bent x 20pelvic raise with legs extended and elevated x 20

I just wish it was simpler. I'm trying a v similar routine to the one you describe and I'm still trying to remember what's what and how to do them. Too much variety for a klutz like me. Running is so nice and simple and relaxing even when it's hard.
― Brio2, Thursday, 6 November 2014 18:47 (eleven years ago)
Oh yeah, another downside of doing a strength program like I do is that you'll probably get pretty heavy after a while, which obv might work against your running goals.
In tribute to NickB's spooky monster dash, I just ran some trails myself. Lighted trails, however, so very little chance of terrible shadowmonsters nipping at my ankles. Talking about running must give a good boost, as I had a really good run. 18 km in ~1:34. Endomondo sez I had my best 1 hour bout in there, too: 11.58 km! Surprising, since I ran a really hilly course (basically uphill for 8km, till I reach the top. Downhill went at roughly the same pace as up, because I'm kinda wimpy going downhill so kept the same pace as going up.)Slightly proud of myself for stopping at 18 km and not making myself go for a half marathon.
Ice on the puddles! Winter is icumen in!

Nothing scientific here but I have been running fewer miles/wk recently while mixing in more swimming and some basic yoga and it feels v good. I hate gyms so lifting won't happen. Running a 10 mile trail race next wknd and pumped for it.
― tobo73, Friday, 7 November 2014 04:56 (eleven years ago)
hah -- yesterday's run was one of those where the legs keep going at a moderate pace while I think about other things. I didn't aim for keeping a certain pace or anything, but, uhh, here's Endomondo's graph for the run:http://i.imgur.com/QEEXOm7.png

I thought that was per mile for a second, and was like wow. But still very nice with that elevation.
― Jeff, Friday, 7 November 2014 12:59 (eleven years ago)
yeah, you've really flattened out that hill there
― john wahey (NickB), Friday, 7 November 2014 13:11 (eleven years ago)
Signed up for an 8K turkey trot. Back at it. Think I can shoot for about 32ish minutes? Probably a little slower.
― Jeff, Friday, 7 November 2014 21:27 (eleven years ago)
Speaking of elevation, this is how fast I went when I tried to run up a mountain in Hong Kong. Perhaps the most ridiculous run I've ever attempted.

feel like its the best workout, canst coast on the hill, also there are only hills where i live so kinda have to be into it
― lag∞n, Friday, 7 November 2014 22:35 (eleven years ago)
ha there are no hills at all where I live so if I ever encounter one my legs can't handle the shock
― legit new threat wrt to a norman invasion (seandalai), Friday, 7 November 2014 23:42 (eleven years ago)
That's basically my problem. The slightest incline kills me.
― Jeff, Saturday, 8 November 2014 00:49 (eleven years ago)
get on the treadmill fellas
― lag∞n, Saturday, 8 November 2014 00:51 (eleven years ago)

my feeling
― lag∞n, Saturday, 8 November 2014 18:14 (eleven years ago)
did a 5k this morning, oh man I cannot run fast anymore. my heart and lungs felt great, so much so that I think I was pissing everyone off around me by chatting away to them all the time, but my legs didn't have any speed in them at all. so that's my winter project sorted I think, would love to knock a minute off my time
― john wahey (NickB), Saturday, 8 November 2014 19:24 (eleven years ago)
also my stomach really did not like all that bouncing around, so some kind of core strengthening would possibly help stabilise that a bit (?)
― john wahey (NickB), Saturday, 8 November 2014 19:25 (eleven years ago)
What was your time?
― Jeff, Saturday, 8 November 2014 19:27 (eleven years ago)
Maybe wear a girdle.
― Jeff, Saturday, 8 November 2014 19:28 (eleven years ago)
that's not such a silly idea maybe - I normally run with a waist pack that keeps everything in tight, but today I went without and it was all hanging loose. time was 19.43
― john wahey (NickB), Saturday, 8 November 2014 19:31 (eleven years ago)
oh one cool thing was Richard Nerurkar was there. people prob don't remember him cos he's v old school but he's the third fastest brit at the marathon (2.08!). think he did 16 mins something at the age of 50
― john wahey (NickB), Saturday, 8 November 2014 19:33 (eleven years ago)

anything that involves lying down and barely moving sounds good to me
