10K is probably my least favorite distance to race hard. So much pain for such a long time
exactly. with a half marathon you always feel like you maybe have a little bit to spare and you're not feeling that you're totally ruining yourself, but with 10k you're pushing right to that line where you're just about keeping your breakfast down
i know nothing about lifting, but anything that works on strengthening the various muscles round your knees is probably a good idea for avoiding injury

I very much would like to be doing something more holistic - not necessarily as race training but just for general health - have just started doing some stretching and light lifting aimed at core strength a few times a week. I don't enjoy it at all though - It's a pain in the ass compared to running, but I'm hoping it will get easier once I get to the point where I can just do the exercises without thinking about them so much.

lots of trail races around here, tempted to do my first next spring. main challenge is a recurring left leg problem, it just sort of stops working a few miles in every time, no pain or cramps or anything, starts turning into floppy unresponsive dead weight, frustrating.

lag∞n, I guess I'm sorta doing that. For the last few years I've been going to the gym a few times a week, plus running a decent amount.As far as squats & deadlifts & running goes — when I started doing those exercises, I found I got a good deal better at handling uphill running.
These days I try to lift three times a week, take a short pilates class once in a while, and go running, uh, when I feel like it. I don't do a lot of speedwork, preferring > 10 k jogs. According to Endomondo I've yet to run 10K in less than 50 minutes. I never compete in anything and have no interest in racing.
It is ... well, it's hard to find the time, really. Squatting three times a week isn't all that conducive to running regularly, for obvious reasons. It occasionally feels like I'm either neglecting my running or my lifting, so the balance tips a bit back and forth, depending on what is most fun or what I most want to improve that month.
I'm not particularly good at either, in other words, but I feel quite fit and have a pretty good time with it. Whenever I take a break from either, I start to miss it.

ive been ~doing runs 2x a week and strength/hill intervals/plyo 2x, tho i just work with what i have at home as far as the strength stuff so its not really any heavy weights, i do pullups/chinups and various dumbbell lifts up to 60lbs (2x30) i and kettle belll swings too, wld prob be cool to join a gym and do some heavier lifts tho, but i also want to do some more milage as im starting to round into form after being pretty out of shape idk

ive seen a marathon training schedule that had a bunch of strength stuff in it particularly aimed at improving running ablities seemed pretty cool
Do y'all experience a lot of difficulty in super cold weather? I'll be using the school gym but I don't want to rely solely on the treadmill for training...

xps i was def exaggerating a bit i think it's probably just a weak / overcompensating muscle related to a weird way my foot is landing idk.
oystein i feel that post, hard to find the time to get deep into running with a 3x/week lifting schedule. putting on mass, getting used to breathing a lot more, getting your core up to speed, more recovery time, etc. such a rush when you feel like you're going uphill and downhill at the same clip like the terminator tho. i always miss lifting when i stop but its such a commitment idk.

My coach usually puts two strength workouts a week on my schedule. I've never done a single one. It's mostly body weight stuff that you don't need a gym for. But they take too much time that I don't have. Examples:

I just wish it was simpler. I'm trying a v similar routine to the one you describe and I'm still trying to remember what's what and how to do them. Too much variety for a klutz like me. Running is so nice and simple and relaxing even when it's hard.

Oh yeah, another downside of doing a strength program like I do is that you'll probably get pretty heavy after a while, which obv might work against your running goals.
In tribute to NickB's spooky monster dash, I just ran some trails myself. Lighted trails, however, so very little chance of terrible shadowmonsters nipping at my ankles. Talking about running must give a good boost, as I had a really good run. 18 km in ~1:34. Endomondo sez I had my best 1 hour bout in there, too: 11.58 km! Surprising, since I ran a really hilly course (basically uphill for 8km, till I reach the top. Downhill went at roughly the same pace as up, because I'm kinda wimpy going downhill so kept the same pace as going up.)Slightly proud of myself for stopping at 18 km and not making myself go for a half marathon.
Ice on the puddles! Winter is icumen in!

Nothing scientific here but I have been running fewer miles/wk recently while mixing in more swimming and some basic yoga and it feels v good. I hate gyms so lifting won't happen. Running a 10 mile trail race next wknd and pumped for it.

did a 5k this morning, oh man I cannot run fast anymore. my heart and lungs felt great, so much so that I think I was pissing everyone off around me by chatting away to them all the time, but my legs didn't have any speed in them at all. so that's my winter project sorted I think, would love to knock a minute off my time
