i know i'm one of the only people on ilx who watches *how i met your mother* on a regular basis, but did anyone else see the robin sparkles episode? where robin didn't want people to know that she had

i do like the fact that for better or worse the corny music beds/references seem kind of like sincere representations of the creators' tastes and not just product placement, and there's as much 'classic' college rock (the Replacements, the Pretenders, Big Star) as there is contemporary lol indie.

some dad (some dude), Wednesday, 18 March 2009 16:15 (seventeen years ago)

besides, ted def seems like a wilco kinda guy.

Roz, Wednesday, 18 March 2009 16:19 (seventeen years ago)

well yeah i actually thought wilco worked there--it didnt really seem like it was trying too hard, and wilco is pretty big, and honestly, i bet ted loves the shit out of wilco

rip dom passantino 3/5/09 never forget (max), Wednesday, 18 March 2009 16:20 (seventeen years ago)

xp ya--the dude i know who reminds me of ted exactly is a wilco fan, so

rip dom passantino 3/5/09 never forget (max), Wednesday, 18 March 2009 16:20 (seventeen years ago)

lol they also refd the breeders & sonic youth in one episode

rip dom passantino 3/5/09 never forget (max), Wednesday, 18 March 2009 16:21 (seventeen years ago)

yah u three are otm the music refs in this show (including ted breaking up w/ a girl because she listened to creed which was lol) seem v. in character. its not stuff id listen to but i dont mind it and found the scene that had "here comes the regular" playing over it kind of moving

Lamp, Wednesday, 18 March 2009 16:23 (seventeen years ago)

wilco isn't really that obscure, it would be worse if they were dropping crystal stilts and a place to bury strangers references

akm, Wednesday, 18 March 2009 16:26 (seventeen years ago)

more lol that the creed cd belonged to marshall! xp

Roz, Wednesday, 18 March 2009 16:28 (seventeen years ago)

wilco isn't really that obscure, it would be worse if they were dropping crystal stilts and a place to bury strangers references

could be! helped make your post terrible at the very least

Lamp, Wednesday, 18 March 2009 16:29 (seventeen years ago)

dont think anyone was saying wilco was obscure

rip dom passantino 3/5/09 never forget (max), Wednesday, 18 March 2009 16:32 (seventeen years ago)

srsly enough about the use of other people's music - this show rules just for giving us "let's go to the mall" and "ted mosby is a jerk".

Roz, Wednesday, 18 March 2009 16:34 (seventeen years ago)

i actually found ted yelling at lily pretty riveting! like, in a dramatic acting kinda way. can't say i am riveted by too many sitcoms these days.

scott seward, Wednesday, 18 March 2009 16:35 (seventeen years ago)

yeah i agree scott, i didnt really rate that actor but i was totally impressed w/ his performance in this ep

rip dom passantino 3/5/09 never forget (max), Wednesday, 18 March 2009 16:36 (seventeen years ago)

the more i think abt it the more i loved that episode i was sitting here loling at future lily yelling BRIDGE! but they got a lot of emotional/character stuff done as well

Lamp, Wednesday, 18 March 2009 16:40 (seventeen years ago)

"i see your bridge and raise you three bridges"

Tracy Michael Jordan Catalano (Jordan), Wednesday, 18 March 2009 16:44 (seventeen years ago)

btw it's kind of surprising that the dude who plays ted hasn't shown up in any terrible romantic comedies yet

Tracy Michael Jordan Catalano (Jordan), Wednesday, 18 March 2009 16:46 (seventeen years ago)

the best part of the bridge sequence was they were mixing the red-backed and the blue-backed cards together, in a totally absurd using multiple decks of cards kind of way.

most shudder-worthy music moment was the belle and sebastian thing imo

The Devil's Avocado (Gukbe), Wednesday, 18 March 2009 16:48 (seventeen years ago)

also worked imo. that girl really seemed like a belle and sebastian type with the soft toys and candles and such.

Roz, Wednesday, 18 March 2009 16:50 (seventeen years ago)

yeah but like they had cds propped up there that wouldn't have been released at that time and i was like wtf guys this doesn't make sense

The Devil's Avocado (Gukbe), Wednesday, 18 March 2009 16:53 (seventeen years ago)

i dont remember the belle & sebastian thing

rip dom passantino 3/5/09 never forget (max), Wednesday, 18 March 2009 16:54 (seventeen years ago)

haha oh ok - yeah i wouldn't know about that. chalk it up to future ted getting the dates wrong again or something.

xp max, the girl who beat ted up after he broke up with her (twice) on her birthday was a belle and sebastian fan.

Roz, Wednesday, 18 March 2009 16:57 (seventeen years ago)

I think he dated a girl who was obsessed with.. chickfactor? I do remember the LOL-gigantic pile of B&S cds all stacked up on top of each other

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Wednesday, 18 March 2009 16:58 (seventeen years ago)

'we rule the school' was the song that was playing, unless i'm remembering it very very wrong.

The Devil's Avocado (Gukbe), Wednesday, 18 March 2009 16:59 (seventeen years ago)

how have i missed so many episodes!

Lamp, Wednesday, 18 March 2009 16:59 (seventeen years ago)

oooh I think you're right Gukbe! All I remembered was a slow tempo :)

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Wednesday, 18 March 2009 17:01 (seventeen years ago)

It feels like to me they've toned down a lot of the musical references (probably to save the annoyances of inevitably cutting them from the DVD releases, which is really weak in this day and age - most shows have that locked up before broadcast now) but I have to admit I smiled when they used a song from Terror Twilight at the end of one of the first season eps.

Nhex, Wednesday, 18 March 2009 17:27 (seventeen years ago)

(also I agree, I think they just have good taste in general, it's not a cynical ploy)

Nhex, Wednesday, 18 March 2009 17:28 (seventeen years ago)

the fact that they've used 2 Pavements songs and they've both been from Terror Twilight is imo something that put them in a corny overload danger zone

xpost

some dad (some dude), Wednesday, 18 March 2009 17:29 (seventeen years ago)

is the music different on the dvds?

The Devil's Avocado (Gukbe), Wednesday, 18 March 2009 17:30 (seventeen years ago)

they make up for the corniness with cheap trick and bon jovi.

Roz, Wednesday, 18 March 2009 17:33 (seventeen years ago)

What, because Terror Twilight is such a cultural touchstone? Would it be worse or better if they used "Cut Your Hair" or something like that? I think the creators/musical director just liked that album... corniness be damned, I guess. Either way the reference is fairly appropriate for characters who got out of college around that time (same with that more plot-critical B&S ref).

^^ A lot of songs are cut from the DVDs. For some reason they'll pay for the TV broadcast rights but not for the DVD rights. This comes up a lot in older TV shows to DVD - Freaks and Geeks was notoriously held up for years as they painfully acquired rights to every song in the show - but for a new show in this age it's kind of stupid they didn't clear them beforehand. I haven't seen any of the DVD sets in a while, so maybe they stopped doing it after season 2 or 3, I don't know.

Nhex i did not mean to hurt your feelings, it was an offhand comment and I did not think through the way it would impact you emotionally

now is the time to winterize your manscape (will), Wednesday, 18 March 2009 17:43 (seventeen years ago)

was it arguing about b&s or pavement that put it into corny overload danger zone for you, will?

Lamp, Wednesday, 18 March 2009 17:49 (seventeen years ago)

i thought i posted a slight retraction on the belles comment, but apparently not. thinking back, that incident must have taken place around the early noughties (right?) which would have been pretty otm for that time iirc. still think there was a continuity error tho.

also, insanity about the music licensing.

The Devil's Avocado (Gukbe), Wednesday, 18 March 2009 17:54 (seventeen years ago)

let's change the subject. marshall removing the chewbacca head to do the voice? awesome!

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Wednesday, 18 March 2009 17:55 (seventeen years ago)

rewatching the naked man. must be the season peak.

The Devil's Avocado (Gukbe), Wednesday, 18 March 2009 17:55 (seventeen years ago)

i really felt bad that they weren't watching Robin's show.

mizzell, Wednesday, 18 March 2009 17:57 (seventeen years ago)

i really felt that bad that we didnt get to watch robin's show. its a must for dvd extra imo

still think the season (and maybe show) peak was barney's family

Lamp, Wednesday, 18 March 2009 17:58 (seventeen years ago)

lol @ lily knowing a bit too much about barney's porno fantasy.

Roz, Wednesday, 18 March 2009 17:59 (seventeen years ago)

some dude: Sorry, maybe that did come off touchier than I wanted it to.

^ I am so hoping this turns out to be from Ted Moseby: Sex Architect!

Nhex, Wednesday, 18 March 2009 19:29 (seventeen years ago)

where is the “touchier” quote coming from? I don’t recognize it? maybe just a brain fart…

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Wednesday, 18 March 2009 19:41 (seventeen years ago)

he's referring to the whole exchange re: Terror Twilight

as far as happy, yo it's like a trigger to me (some dude), Wednesday, 18 March 2009 19:44 (seventeen years ago)
