You can make this come over all System 6 by disabling transparency and increasing contrast. White menu bar back!

Nhex, Saturday, 18 October 2014 02:39 (eleven years ago)

yosemite impressions
-don't like this font but i guess i'll get used to it
-hate this day-glo super flat dock, i came in w/10.5 so I'm used to the pseudo-3D crap
-also every app now is gonna redesigned flatter icons soon

Nhex, Saturday, 18 October 2014 02:43 (eleven years ago)

my biggest complaint is i don't like this new trash can, looks cheap

Clay, Saturday, 18 October 2014 02:56 (eleven years ago)

is swapping out system icons still a thing

Spirit of Match Game '76 (silby), Saturday, 18 October 2014 03:01 (eleven years ago)

at least the acrobat pro icon looks less stupid now relative to the rest of my dock

droit au butt (Euler), Saturday, 18 October 2014 08:17 (eleven years ago)

MacOS updates have been getting steadily less exciting since Leopard.

Twist of Caliphate (Bob Six), Saturday, 18 October 2014 08:30 (eleven years ago)

Maybe when they finally make MacOS 11 it will be the exciting one.

Jeff, Saturday, 18 October 2014 11:28 (eleven years ago)

What does the dot under the application in the Dock mean now? Just that it was recently used OR it's open?

Nhex, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 05:02 (eleven years ago)

open

This is the kind of thing that could make Apple Pay really useful:
http://perkwave.com/

(not showing up in my app store searches yet for some reason)

idk anything that requires both merchant and customer adoption is going to have growth struggles, and will basically be a middleman once restaurants adopt EMV terminals (which are generally brought to the table).

Spirit of Match Game '76 (silby), Tuesday, 21 October 2014 17:38 (eleven years ago)

Turns out this uses the contactless stuff which is already everywhere in the UK, so it's off to a winner here

stet, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 17:39 (eleven years ago)

xpthe fact that the waiter can literally just drop the check off and leave and then you can pay and leave is pretty time-saving on both ends. Although I guess a reader isn't that much more time-consuming for the waiter.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 21 October 2014 17:40 (eleven years ago)

Same tech as Octopus? xp

, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 17:41 (eleven years ago)

Wait, Oyster is what you chaps call it

, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 17:41 (eleven years ago)

The US as the world's foremost financial power can be really backwards when it comes to moving money around

I guess a bunch of it is just structural inertia

, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 17:42 (eleven years ago)

do you guys just mean near-field communications?

ya those lil terminals thatre brought to the table (really terrible experience btw from a dining perspective imo) are everywhere in the world except USA, agree w hurting that the code on the check is a way better solution

lag∞n, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 17:48 (eleven years ago)

I see that OpenTable is going to support ApplePay, which means that many restaurants will be able to start using it soon.

schwantz, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 17:50 (eleven years ago)

be curious to see how it all plays out, obvs this stuff has to be universal to really work you cant have any sort of siloed platforms like square or apple play and have it achieve any sort of ubiquity, has to work for everyone regardless which type of phone or app theyre using

lag∞n, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 17:52 (eleven years ago)

prob end up w the banks/credit card companies owning the space once the technology gets sorted out

lag∞n, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 17:53 (eleven years ago)

restaurants aren't really the prime use-case for NFC though? shaving seconds off a transaction is not really what it's about in a restaurant.

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 21 October 2014 18:31 (eleven years ago)

I disagree: waiter brings check, walks away, you pay it, waive him back, he walks away with it, you wait for him to come back so you can leave tip on your card, he comes back, you leave tip, you leave. Can easily be five minutes or more in a busy restaurant. That's not only the customer's time but time the table is tied up.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 21 October 2014 18:33 (eleven years ago)

qr code on check cld shave like 15mins off!

lag∞n, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 18:33 (eleven years ago)

or more!

lag∞n, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 18:33 (eleven years ago)

also if it made it easy to split the check my lord!

lag∞n, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 18:34 (eleven years ago)

Like this blue sky thinking

, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 18:35 (eleven years ago)

most of those card machines have a way to input the tip directly, though, right? waiter brings machine, you stick card in, type PIN, enter tip amount, press enter, hand it back to the waiter, waiter waits a few seconds, receipt comes out, he hands it to you, done. doing that contactlessly doesn't really help.

contactless really comes into its own in a busy sandwich shop. in the UK it's already kind of weird when shops don't accept contactless cards.

that said, not sure why a phone would be easier than a card...

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 21 October 2014 18:35 (eleven years ago)

fucking w those lil machines while the waiter hovers is such a major fn downer my lord what an unchill way to cap off a meal they shd pay u

lag∞n, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 18:43 (eleven years ago)

"would you like to split it folks or" *conversation about slitting the bill ensues*

lag∞n, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 18:44 (eleven years ago)

contrast with waiter sliding the bill onto the table "thanks a lot"

lag∞n, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 18:45 (eleven years ago)

otm

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 21 October 2014 18:49 (eleven years ago)

those machines pair perfectly w/canadian passive aggression btw

lag∞n, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 18:52 (eleven years ago)

i prefer a machine to those assholes who order 10 drinks and then insist that everyone splits the bill equally

Nhex, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 18:52 (eleven years ago)

code on check can solve all these problems tho

lag∞n, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 18:54 (eleven years ago)

everyone scans the code, selects the dishes they ate, and its over

lag∞n, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 18:55 (eleven years ago)

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 21 October 2014 18:56 (eleven years ago)

mattresslessness, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 18:59 (eleven years ago)

xp ohhh i didn't understand that about the QR code. ok that makes a lot of sense

Nhex, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 19:00 (eleven years ago)

an asshole eating machine, good for business, good for america
