Joan + Glenda = <3<3<3 squared.

How did they learn to talk so fast?

As an aside, I wonder if anyone has ever seen the (reportedly dreadful) "God's Gift to Women" (1931) in which Louise Brooks stars alongside Joan Blondell, and they even get into a scrap with each other in one scene?

Pffff.

Winifred Lenihan is the most stunning of all of these - the rest seem very obviously tied to their time, whereas she could have stepped out of any decade.

Funny, Norma Shearer always looks very modern to me, even if the acting sometimes betrays that.

Huge in her day, but now forgotten movie star Dolores Costello, weirdly contemporary looking image, could have been taken yesterday, I think. it's from the late '20's:

v v difficult to find a pic of Pola that gives an impression of what she looked like in motion. in stills she can look very masculine, absolutely not the case in her films:

Pashmina, Friday, 8 August 2008 12:08 (fifteen years ago) link

there's this picture of hepburn by Horst back when she was just starting out and she's all curled up in a chair all legs and arms and looking very modern and sophisticated -- i only saw it once at a gallery in chelsea that was selling vintage prints for god-knows how many thousands of dollars and I haven't seen it since.

Toby Wing, one of my favourites!

being serenaded by Dick Powell in "42nd Street":

as a cactus flower in this unbelievable number from "Murder at the Vanities" in 1934.

I sort of remember reading some comment that she made in which she said she'd had a better time in the depression than most because she'd been paid to pout and look pretty and basically do nothing.

I'm very surprised by the lack of the original Platinum Blonde, Jean Harlow

http://static.guim.co.uk/Guardian/arts/gallery/2008/feb/01/photography1/Jean-Harlow-28.jpg

As lady Astor is alleged to have said "You spell it with a silent 't'."

Ooh, Alice White, good call. She was funny, too.

(If you want to order "The Goddess" off amazon, search for the book, which comes with a DVD. Searching under movies only yields a DVD-r bootleg copy.)

Unsure of the actress's name, but she's from 1933's absolutely beuatiful silent Japanese gangster flick 'Hijosen no onna' or 'Dragnet Girl'
