I think it might be reasonable to assume it wasn't originally conceived as an issue about equality and justice, it was probably meant to be an issue about new masculinity / the future of white men, etc, and as a fig leaf to counter the perception that this is a tired, navel-gazing, exclusionary trope they got Perry on board to contribute a radical-seeming editorial and cover.

Voted Amis, should probably have voted Parsons. Gill at least seems to have some self-awareness about his own horribleness.

It'd be awesome - if white privilege and male privilege weren't actual real society-destroying things, unlike witchcraft. But I know convincing people that they are real is hard sell, even on ILX.

It's an *extremely* middle aged list as well - virtually everyone here except Owen Jones is on the list on the back of things they did two decades ago at least. Only Will Self and Jon Snow and I dunno maybe Damian Barr are considered to be doing their best work now, nearly everyone else is here on the back of a decaying reputation.

I generally like Andrew Marr, Rowan Williams, Perry himself and some things that involve Robert Webb. I don't actually know very much about Snow's personal politics but unlike virtually everyone else here he's a proper journalist who has actually earned the platform that he gets and uses it reasonably well.

(And yeah I know Snow is a product of privilege as much as anyone on this list)

Number one thing: challenging the primary sexism in the media, which is not porn, or page three, or sacking newsreader females as they get older, but employing images of women as decoration. This happens all the time. Check the front pages of all broadsheets and magazines, from the Times to the Mail. It is often, I think, unconscious, or just a reflex economic imperative, based on the idea that images of women sell. It should be resisted and men should – this might sound weird but I’m serious – join with feminists in calling for more men to be in these photographs.

Yeah I totally get that. In many ways the whole BBC, Guardian, Independant etc "high" culture establishment is something I loathe and I was always opposed to so many things about their arts coverage. Almost seeing it as an enemy.
But at the same time I like a lot of those people (not specifically the people on the list) and I can't deny that that crowd has probably brought me a lot more than I would often think.

Also NME, Mojo, Uncut, The Word and the resultant BBC music coverage. I despise probably more things about that crowd but there certainly were good things in there too.

agree strongly with an extended version, you are always better reading someone he is pontificating on rather than him.

I think it stayed with me more because of 'Alan The Bottom' than anything more high-minded to be honest. and I still haven't read In Search of Lost Time
