no shortage of non-comedians being interviewed on podcasts

I need my podcast hosts to be comfortable on mic. Comedians are generally good at that, many many non-comedian podcast hosts are not.

Comedian hosts are fine, usually, unless they're Jeff Garlin or Chris Hardwick.

I don't get a ton of time to listen to podcasts, so it works out. 1 WTF a week, various NPR-y ones, and several food/cooking podcasts do it.

what is a good cooking podcast

Cooking Issues w/ Dave Arnold
Splendid Table (sometimes good, sometimes too NPRy)
KCRW's Good Food but that's more about food than cooking.

Anerica's Test Kitchen podcast is good for cooking knowledge, but the call-in segments run too long. I usually skip through most of it.

good musician-on-musician podcasts i've been listening to lately:

No Effects (one of the dude from Tanlines)
Secret Skin w/Open Mike Eagle
Wandering Wolf (Yoni Wolf)
and Blockhead's podcast with a friend of his that's not about music or interviews at all

The WTF explicitly plays up the jealously/resentment angle. Like:

Neighbors director Nicholas Stoller is someone who movie studios trust with millions of dollars in production costs. Naturally, Marc wants to know how Nick got that way. He suspects Nick’s Harvard education has a lot to do with it, much to Marc’s chagrin as someone who went to nearby Boston University and spent his own college career on the outside looking in.

Kathy Griffin stops by for a true throwback WTF episode. It’s a throwback because Kathy and Marc spend the first 10 minutes defusing past tension and figuring out the root of their problem. Then with that out of the way, they talk about the alternative comedy scene, Kathy’s struggles to fit in with the stand-up crowd and her unlikely breakthrough as a reality TV star.

Bill Clinton stops by the Cat Ranch for a very special episode. Marc asks the President what his parents did, whether he met Lorne in the mid-90s, what it was like to live in Arkansas.

unresolved tension from years ago is not the same as currently resenting his guests though.

God I love Larry Wilmore.

The Wilmore one was actually pretty great and interesting. But I swear, Marc is about six months away from a spin-off podcast called, So, Who Are Your Black Guys?.

Went to one of the Trepany House shows tonight. Silly at times and I'll never tire of the ice cream story. I like it when Marc goes contemptous - mercilessly on Sting of all people "someone who needs to be recognized." Maladjustment in the life a middle-tier cable show celebrity is suddenly more relatable. Seeing him live go from zero to full-out rage is still "whoa!" moment (was talking about going from Skype sex to Skype fighting). Fully realize that I am being one of the bloggers he mocks by writing this.

I don't think I could spend more than five minutes in the same room with Bob Rubin before going insane.

The Rubin podcast was almost too much to bear. Marc handled it pretty well, and was able to maintain at least a little objectivity when Rubin was talking about the REALLY dark times.

Does anyone else feel like a total fucking tourist when you hear stories like this one, the details surrounding Robin Williams' private life, or other mental health/chemical dependency issues? I constantly go very quickly from (1) Man, that's fucked up, to (2) I'm glad that's not me, to (3) Man, I feel guilty about using someone else's bad times to make myself feel better about my own.

no, i always watch that one kurt cobain interview where he's wearing the tinsel when i feel really crappy physically or emotionally

Maron on Buddhism was great. "So you know that movie The Last Detail, when Randy Quaid is hanging out with those hippies? That's basically where Buddhism was coming from in that era, right? Amazing how many cults there were in Los Angeles in the 60's and 70's. So anyways..."

in his search for self Maron has picked up much wisdom

Pre-interview Marc bores me for the most part (like most ppl) but his Sting story was funny. Rob Rubin is a good stand-up, there's some stuff of his on YouTube/Vimeo although not a lot.

Rubin's the second guy on WTF who used to be part of Comedy Corner at the University of AZ. (The other was Graham Elwood.)

lol @ Andre Arroyo's story about seeing Rocky in a black theater and the whole audience rooting for the white guy to beat up the black guy. THAT'S MOVIE MAGIC.

I dug that conversation, and am VERY glad they took a long time to get to the Wire. Dude had an interesting upbringing, and was a good interviewee. He and Maron were obviously having a good time talking with each other.

Yeah, that was a fun interview to hear. I've still never even watched The Wire, so when I do I'll be looking extra forward to seeing his part.

Pretty sure he's the only character in each of the five seasons that's not a cop. As noted in the interview, he's the common thread for the whole story.

Shit, now I wanna go watch the Wire again.
