Hope so. Although I can mostly attribute it to training for a half next month, I've definitely been running faster stuff and not going any longer than 16 miles on my long runs. I expect if I was marathon training, those averages would be higher.

Jeff, Tuesday, 7 October 2014 19:42 (eleven years ago)

man, half marathons are really good to train for i think. a perfect distance really

john wahey (NickB), Tuesday, 7 October 2014 19:50 (eleven years ago)

aw nice

it's true but sometimes my kids ride really fast and don't understand that their dad just wants to run slow all day and be mellow. sometimes it completely murdered me! then we'd stop for ice cream or whatever and then things would be okay again

john wahey (NickB), Tuesday, 7 October 2014 19:54 (eleven years ago)

lol

lag∞n, Tuesday, 7 October 2014 19:57 (eleven years ago)

I like training for the half, but man am I dreading the actual racing part. I've never been a huge fan of racing anyway, it's just the logical conclusion to my training that I feel I have to follow through on. I get super nervous. The thought of training to maintain a 7:05 pace for 13.1 miles is making me sick to my stomach right now.

I shouldn't worry, I've almost always met or exceeded my own expectations, so I should be OK. And if not, that's fine too. I'm going to PR, but I may not get as close to 1:30-1:32 as I want.

Jeff, Tuesday, 7 October 2014 20:13 (eleven years ago)

never underestimate the power of running with a bunch of other people to tow you along at a good fast pace without you necessarily noticing! i know what you mean about nerves though. FUCKING NERVES! guh!

john wahey (NickB), Tuesday, 7 October 2014 20:45 (eleven years ago)

oh shit, this weekend is coming round so quickly. previous mild panickiness now grading into fits of bowel-churning terror. weather forecast is okay-ish - light rain showers and max wind of 17mph, but temperatures only go down to +16 celsius, so at least i should avoid overnight hypothermia. good news is i've found a willing victim to join me as a pacer on some (possibly all) of the last leg - my sister's partner, good man. hope he's prepared for some hardcore 30 minute miles

john wahey (NickB), Tuesday, 14 October 2014 13:02 (eleven years ago)

Good luck NickB! I usually get jazzed during races and do better, everyone is so nice. One reason I do them infrequently (aside from them being expensive and not needing that many t-shirts) is I don't want their specialness to go away.

erry red flag (f. hazel), Tuesday, 14 October 2014 13:18 (eleven years ago)

haha, yes - the t-shirts are mostly hideous as well (at least all the ones i've ever had are). sponsors' names all over the place too

john wahey (NickB), Tuesday, 14 October 2014 13:32 (eleven years ago)

I just did the Oxford half marathon on sunday. I was hoping for 1:45 and got 1:40, so that was pleasing. (Previous best was 1:47)

prince moth mothy moth moth (cajunsunday), Tuesday, 14 October 2014 13:40 (eleven years ago)

Sweet time! Good to totally blow your previous PR out of the water.

So I'm 17 days from my half and I have an important workout this weekend to gauge if it is even possible to shoot for the goal I've been thinking about. 7 miles easy, then 6 at goal HMP, then 1 easy. HMP is not pleasant, and I've yet to get that "locked-in" feel while running it. If I can't get at least somewhat comfortable with the uncomfortablness for 6 miles, then no way I can do it for 13.1 later.

I have to remember this: http://www.coachcaleb.com/training/tips/daily-coaching-tip-why-race-pace-so-hard-training

Jeff, Tuesday, 14 October 2014 14:20 (eleven years ago)

great result cajunsunday, that's awesome!

john wahey (NickB), Tuesday, 14 October 2014 17:01 (eleven years ago)

you guys are m/l doing a diff activity than me ur so much better at it

lag∞n, Tuesday, 14 October 2014 17:14 (eleven years ago)

Hardly, it's all relative.

Spectated the Chicago Marathon on Sunday. It's always a spectacle. Awesome to see the elites, but I also make sure I catch the slower people as they finish up. These are people shuffling to complete it in 6 or 7 hours. I was at mile 25 and it basically looks like the walking dead at that point, but most people are still so determined to finish. That was me in 2010 when I ran, well walked, it in 5 hours 40 minutes.

Jeff, Tuesday, 14 October 2014 18:44 (eleven years ago)

12 hours to go before the start of this thing, uh oh. currently sitting alone in a rubbish budget hotel in reading town centre, eating cold pasta out of a tooth mug with a teaspoon. had a few ciders hoping i'll get some kip but um, I'm not sure it's going to happen. butterflies in my stomach, more like I've got a pair of fucking buzzards flapping around in there. feel like I've got a mega cold starting too, my head feels filthy. nevermind eh? see you on the other side guys!

john wahey (NickB), Friday, 17 October 2014 20:25 (eleven years ago)

Jeff, Sunday, 19 October 2014 15:28 (eleven years ago)

Well done Nick! I can't even get my head around running for 22 hours.

prince moth mothy moth moth (cajunsunday), Sunday, 19 October 2014 17:45 (eleven years ago)

recommend me some inexpensive pants (not tights) good for running, current situation so shredded

lag∞n, Wednesday, 22 October 2014 17:30 (eleven years ago)

btw ive ordered 4 pairs of shoes in the last couple weeks and returned 3 of them and have another pair on the way, ive never been super picky abt fit, like my last pair were comically wide but w/e, but i decided to try to get something that fits me real nice this time, also want to have a couple styles of shoe going at once, i have a wide forefoot and a normal rest of my foot and i like a nice big toe box for my toes to flatten out in, the ones i found that i like the fit are the nb mt810 http://www.newbalance.com/pd/new-balance-trail-810v3/MT810-V3.html#color=Grey_with_Neon Yellow_and_Grey Stone but theyre pretty gnarly trail shoes with treads that are kinda ridiculous for running on pavement, i mostly run on dirt roads anyway so its cool but id like to get some lightweight road shoes thatre fairly minimal, i like to feel the road w/o going totally minimal zero drop etc

so far ive tried the ASICS Men's Gel Lyte33 3 in two diff sizes (cause that shoefitr thing that is a super cool idea but turn out to be kinda sus told me to try a too small size initially) and the nb m1400, both of those are def the style of shoe im after but didnt fit good, the nb was too narrow in the toebox and asics upper was too tight and my foot just sat weird in it

anyway i have a pair of kinvara 4s on the way see how that goes

lag∞n, Wednesday, 22 October 2014 17:53 (eleven years ago)

No idea on the pants. When winter comes, I'm all tights. Much to my muffin top's dismay.

I tried the Gel Lyte33 3's and they just didn't work for me. I was a big fan of the 2's, but they chopped off some weight and they just became not enough sure to carry the load I'm asking them to carry. I kept getting this feeling like they were just slapping the ground as I ran.

I currently run in Kinvara 5's. Previous Kinvara models never worked for me because of the toe box not being wide enough, but the 5's seem like a perfect fit for me. I rotate 5 pairs currently.

Intrigued by the Hoka Cliftons...

Jeff, Wednesday, 22 October 2014 18:05 (eleven years ago)

damn shdve ordered the 5s, seduced by sales

lag∞n, Wednesday, 22 October 2014 18:06 (eleven years ago)

why do u rotate so many btw

lag∞n, Wednesday, 22 October 2014 18:07 (eleven years ago)

maybe ill just order some 5s rn lol no one can stop meeeee

lag∞n, Wednesday, 22 October 2014 18:07 (eleven years ago)

Usually I just have 3 pairs. It worked out I have 3 close to retirement, hence the two extras for now.

Jeff, Wednesday, 22 October 2014 18:11 (eleven years ago)

ah so, do u like use the ones at different stags in the lifecycle for different runs or anything
