kephm almost OTM; I'd say Emerson and BC are equivalent but they're both WAY BETTER than any other game in town.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

i beg to differ. ive been listening to wzbc for 20 years. Emerson doesnt have nearly as much variety.

kephm, Wednesday, 29 September 2004 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not talking variety, I'm talking about how much I enjoy listening to both.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

ERS has the same shows on daily (weekdays). that's a bit meh

xpost

really? you must listen to much more a cappella , bluegrass and gospel

kephm, Wednesday, 29 September 2004 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Dan is the acapella king of ILM Boston.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Boston sucks ass!! Taste NYC's capitalism bitches!!!
-- Ally-zay (sor...), October 17th, 2003.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 30 September 2004 03:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Boston needs a capitalism bitch or two to liven things up.

moneyonthedancefloor (kephm), Thursday, 30 September 2004 12:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I liked WZBC too, but I found frustrating how the djs would play 10 songs in a row and then forget to say what they all were in the breaks between songs. Emerson's studios are very nice on the inside - I wouldn't have minded doing shows there. (I am totally biased about boston college radio)

marianna, Thursday, 30 September 2004 12:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Kephm, if you are in the orchestra, look out for me, and say hello. I will be the one trying to not to subtlely scam my way toward the front. Have you seen any NYC FAP pictures? Well, I don't look like that anymore. I now have a short, boy's haircut.

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 3 October 2004 21:20 (twenty-one years ago)

BC v. BU students...BC students for playing chicken on Comm. Ave. less often, BU students for cars one will likely forever envy and never own. Ultimately a wash though (i.e. neither are big on redeeming qualities [as generalizations go, which undergrads do...?]).

ZBC v. ERS - ERS is a hair more listenable than ZBC can be at times. Although, on average, ZBC sponsors better shows.

Up Beacon Street (over the bridge on your right) from Buckminster is Audubon Circle which has great, cheap eats, the best bathrooms in Boston and decor to match.

nader (nader), Monday, 4 October 2004 00:43 (twenty-one years ago)

somerville vs. cambridge?

Remy (x Jeremy), Monday, 4 October 2004 02:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Jamaica Plain vs Allston vs Mission Hill

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Monday, 4 October 2004 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

how recognisable are the places where the public executions are described in A Handmaid's Tale?

DV (dirtyvicar), Monday, 4 October 2004 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Boston, why do you wear baseball caps, muscle tees, and shorts to concerts?

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

thats the official uniform of concertgoers in massachusetts.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

because all the clubs are near Fenway

Professor Challenger (ex machina), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

mary, i didn't make the show cause i was sick. how many smiths songs did i miss?

kephm, Wednesday, 6 October 2004 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

About three or four. The Boston crowd loves their Smiths songs. They went crazy for "How Soon is Now" and stared blindly for Moz-solo.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

heaven knows i'm miserable now

kephm, Wednesday, 6 October 2004 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Were you there last night? I was hanging out in front of the Orpheum chatting with some castmembers as the show let out (and actually ran into people I know who went to the concert).

Did you see the "models"?

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, I was there! I hightailed it out quick though as I had to rush to the Buckminster, pick up my bag, then rush to the C'town bus. Did you see Mozzer leave the theater? What models?

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't see Moz, alas; we were down by the bagel place near the subway exit.

There were some "models" (ie, painfully thin, unattractive women, and I mean SERIOUSLY unattractive, like missing teeth and cross-eyed pony unattractive) dressed up in goofy, outlandish gear (ie, metallic fabric off-the-shoulder-in-a-Flashdance-stylee blouses with plastic miniskirts and thigh boots with their hair teased out to Connecticut) who were strutting around Boston Common near the Park Street T-station and walking up and down Winter St by the construction around the corner from the theater with a photographer in tow putting them into wildly goofy tableaus. It was very amusing.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 14:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Too bad, I didn't see anyone like that. I did see a lot of guys in baseball caps though, like, everywhere. The Orpheum Mon night was no good--there was an empty seat in the second row, but these people wouldn't let me sit there bc "That's not your seat." Then there was an empty space right in front of the stage but the bouncer wouldn't let me stand there. So I was finally reduced to standing in the second row. Tues was a lot better--they let me sit in the second row and then let me stand right next to the stage, within easy groping distance. I really liked the Public Gardens and Boston Commons--especially with the weather so beautiful when I was there. My favorite thing about Boston? Hello Kitty World on Newbury.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

what's the name of that ephemera shop on, uh, harvard ave i guess, in allston? the one with cool stationery and metal doodads? or maybe it's closed....

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 15:48 (twenty-one years ago)

god i've forgotten everything about boston

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 15:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah, I forgot about the ridiculous Sanrio store on Newbury! I've never been in there but it always makes me giggle when I see it.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

i just remember it blinding me with tweeness

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

i love that store.

kephm, Wednesday, 6 October 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

i love all the stationery with totally garbled english phrases

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

My walkman finally died on the trip up, and I was sooooo tempted to buy the light blue Cinamaroll walkman there, but by some strange force of character, I resisted the impulse.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

"somerville v. cambridge"

No contest: Somerville.

nader (nader), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

(PS, with the noted Cambridge exceptions of the Kendall Square Cinema, Twisted Village, and Chez Henri (where my wife and I got engaged.)

nader (nader), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 21:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Aw, that's so awesome! I keep intending to go to Chez Henri but we haven't gotten around to it yet.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 21:08 (twenty-one years ago)

>>what's the name of that ephemera shop on, uh, harvard ave i guess, in allston?

Cambridge exceptions

Pinocchio's

Lukas (lukas), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

which side of the line is Tacos Lupita on?

Lukas (lukas), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

This thread really has some amazing moments on it:

Dude, getting a kick in the balls is better than Boston, of course Philly is better. I went up there to visit my sister and we could literally see where she was from all points driving but had no discernible way to GET to her because the roads just don't go anywhere but a big circle.

-- Ally (garance8...), December 11th, 2001.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Boston mentality: If you're lost, it's your fault for coming here in the first place.

PS, Don't look for street signs, that money goes to potholes.

nader (nader), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

tacos lupita (salvadoran, mexican • somerville • ***)

13 elm st, somerville, ma, 02143

617-666-0677

(although it's awfully clost to the line, no?)

nader (nader), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

close, close to the line

nader (nader), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 22:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, that would be... Davis Square, I guess? Maybe Porter?

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I went to Pinochios--these nice boys at the famous ice cream shop recommended i either go there or to some Mexican place.

Why is it never time for you to WALK across the streets in Boston? At every street I came to, traffic was whizzing by, there was never a walk sign, and I had to push the stupid button and wait forever. Then, get 1/3 of the way across the huge street, and start all over again.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I found the areas of Boston where white people live mostly useless, but I enjoyed the Spanish (Hyde Square, Chelsea), Portuguese (East Cambridge), Chinese (Chinatown), Korean (Allston), Vietnamese (Uphams Corner), whatever pan-asian thing the the Porter Exchange is, and most of Roxbury/Dorchester well enough.

Radiowise, the only college stuff I enjoyed much were the Late Risers Club on WMBR (some of the best radio I've ever heard, actually), the goofy classic rock show that comes on after it, and the Greek(?) guy who plays 60's garage rock on WHRB. The Record Hospital was very disappointing, given all the legendary stuff I'd heard about it, but the orgies on WHRB are great. I never found anything interesting on WERS and WZBC.

Kris (aqueduct), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, that would be... Davis Square, I guess? Maybe Porter?

Actually, it's Wilson Square (seriously, I'm not making this up). But yeah, down the street a bit from Porter. (Or Portah, if you prefer).

nader (nader), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 23:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, wacky Boston and its 8,000,000,000,000 squares.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Thursday, 7 October 2004 01:39 (twenty-one years ago)

(yes I know it's really Cambridge and Somerville but humor me here)

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Thursday, 7 October 2004 01:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Sigh... I remember Davis Square... not surprising since I lived there 3 months ago.

+ Anna's Taqueria (!!!)
+ Diesel Cafe
+ That other really dirty cafe.
+ JP Licks
+ The Burren
------------------
Reasons for Somerville's continued existence.

Remy (x Jeremy), Thursday, 7 October 2004 01:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, but there are at least two other locations for Anna's.

Is the other really dirty cafe Someday?

Also, REDBONE'S.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Thursday, 7 October 2004 01:43 (twenty-one years ago)

How could I have forgotten Redbones? And yeah, it was Someday. I used to get rooibos iced tea after work from a cute girl with a full-color Mad Max tattoo on her arm.
