theres only a vague correlation between how brazilian people identify themselves racially and their ancestry
― nakhchivan, Saturday, 27 September 2014 21:28 (eleven years ago)
very much doubt whether ronaldinho identifies as 'pardo' though
― nakhchivan, Saturday, 27 September 2014 21:29 (eleven years ago)
well obv ancestry is so mixed compared to most countries that any categories are going to be especially arbitrary and loose. can't find the bit about ronaldinho's identification but suspect it was on this blog - http://blackwomenofbrazil.co/
― ogmor, Saturday, 27 September 2014 21:42 (eleven years ago)
they arent quite as arbitrary as all that and it very much depends on what part of the country, rio grande do sul where he comes from has large populations of german, swiss, polish people etc and a different sort of identity to equatorial brazil, ronaldinho is i think petit-bourgeois by birth unlike most famous brazilian players which would shift his terms of identification somewhat but id imagine he would still be de facto classified as preto by most
― nakhchivan, Saturday, 27 September 2014 21:53 (eleven years ago)
there's a lot of debate on that brazilian blog about self-identification vs perceptions & how/if/to what extent ppl distance themselves from blackness. the number of brazilians identifying as preto has shrunk a lot & it's an issue for anti-racist campaigners

Ronaldinho has made 14 appearances in all competitions - scoring only three goals and making two assists.
However, the Mexican club's fitness coach Roberto Bassagaisteguy recently revealed the 34-year-old hasn't been pulling his weight in training.
''He doesn't do physical exercise,' Bassagaisteguy said of Ronaldinho. 'I can't force him to run because he doesn't like it. He does special exercises with special players. I know what they like.

Kabuscorp president Kangamba expects Ronaldinho to be plying his trade in Girabola - the top division of Angolan football - at the halfway mark of 2015.
"It's a certainty. We are negotiating, but Ronaldinho has to terminate the contract with his current club, and then be able to join us in June," Kangamba told Public Television Angola (PTA) .
"You may ask why I picked Ronaldinho... Well, I want quality in my squad."
If Ronaldinho does complete a move to Kabuscorp, he would follow in the footsteps of former team-mate Rivaldo, who joined the club on a one-year deal in 2012.

Selling "Christmas ornaments" with images of Auschwitz does not seem appropriate. Auschwitz on a bottle opener is rather disturbing and disrespectful. We ask @amazon to remove the items of those suppliers. https://t.co/0uG2JG558e pic.twitter.com/ucZoTWPk1W— Auschwitz Memorial (@AuschwitzMuseum) December 1, 2019

I have to applaud Auschwitz Memorial's stone-faced reaction to this horrifying shit:
Sadly, it is not over yet @amazon. The "Massacre Auschwitcz (!) Birkenau Jewish Death" mousepad is another disturbing online product. We are not sure if @yadvashem would like the "Christmas ornament" with a freight car used for deporting Jews for extermination either. https://t.co/qDEEzqzwSU pic.twitter.com/wXExhFZPmV— Auschwitz Memorial (@AuschwitzMuseum) December 1, 2019

Kind of glad there wasn't a more appropriate thread for it? This one barely is tbh.
In the wake of DJP's link, there were some local stories here consisting of the same "bad taste" element. Online vendors pull xmas stuff or postcards or canvas posters that were "decorated" w/ images of concentration camps. Any morality is lost on bots (and those who let bots roam free), but I've seen shops online presenting posters/stickers/canvas etc with questionable content before. Basically, the "store" works as follows: if it's an image that exists on the internet, we can print it for you on X, look: here's an example.
xps all otm

I'm in a facebook group that documents US conservatives' weird obsession with AOC, and there were some bottle opener images recently that gave me flashbacks to this thread (especially with the handful of "I don't see how that's racist" replies).
Just goes to show, the real divide on the "Racist trinkets: classic or dud?" issue has never been UK/US
