all frequently used usernames are collectivized and distributed on a lottery system. every day when you log in you are assigned a new one and post under it, so i can be dr. morbius one day and branwell the next and then wins on another day etc. and you can be me and all of these people too. it is up to the poster whether to post according to the "persona" of their new handle or to resist it but you cannot ever reveal who you *really* are.

how does ilx traffic / average user numbers compare to say 3/4/5 years ago?

thats interesting because there seem to be frequent episodes now, even outside of the usual sunday 10am gmt sort of predictable deadzones, where the active users is <40 and nobody is posting much

the last time that happened it was some eej with a greasemonkey script gone awry

three times more views than any other thread in the last hour despite being revived for the first time in several days four minutes ago

You apparently have never seen the full power of a malicious troll in action.

atm nothing stops anyone on ilx from going on a rampage and image bombing every thread they don't like with porn images. You or anyone else here could, this minute, start trolling the shit out of ilx. The only difference if ilx were an unmoderated forum would be that, instead of anyone having the power to stop your crude, destructive behavior, no one could stop you. You'd have absolutely free rein to continue for as long as you pleased.

I watched as this happened to the old Ask A Drunk forum when it was on Greenspun's LUSENET. A petulant child of 12 arrived at the forum, was teased, and so he utterly destroyed the place, because no one had the power to prevent him and a vengeful 12 year old with no social life or skills has lots of spare time to pursue childish vengeance.

ILX has no immunity from attracting members who decide, for their own reasons, that ilx (or merely one or two individual ilx members) should be punished for existing and they are just the instruments to accomplish this punishment. Banning is the only quick, simple, effective method for controlling these antisocial activities.
