rip that is rad, i am looking for cheap earbuds that are decent. my headphones take such a beating that i don't want to shell out for something expensive. i have standard issue apple earbuds that came with my ipod and as usual they are starting to tear at the base of the cord
― marcos, Wednesday, 10 September 2014 16:19 (eleven years ago)
was thinking of ditching earbuds this time, but for 6 months of the year i am wearing a winter hat outdoors and i don't know how regular headphones work with a winter hat
― marcos, Wednesday, 10 September 2014 16:20 (eleven years ago)
B&H didn't have those Audio Technicas strangely.
I happened to notice that all the CVS stores have Philips earbuds on clearance now (philips discontinuing the line? Idk) including the SH 3590 which have a reputation similar to the monoprice as great all round performers. I bought them and I'm really digging them so far. Bass is present but unexaggerated, same w/treble. These don't have the distinctive super wide stereo image of the monoprice but they also sound more natural to me. Worth grabbing when you're picking up your meds.

Get rid of the rubber bit that's tearing and mould some Sugru round them.
― Alba, Monday, 15 September 2014 01:16 (eleven years ago)
Definitely super feeling these 3590s. Went through a gamut of different stuff tonight on them (meat puppets, current 93, john barry, sibelius)

NB I had a pair of comply foam tips in my bag and put those on there instead of struggling with the silicone thingies.

afraid it's too late, the wires have already been torn and the sound quality is compromised when the cord is bent a certain way

Alright everyone: Koss PortaPro KTC, Sennheiser PX 100-IIi, or iGrado?
Anyone used at least two of those and can compare them? I'm leaning toward one of the first two because they're available with iPod/iPhone controls and mic, and because they fold. But good sound is first. That and comfort.
― and in his absence, she (Lee626), Monday, 29 September 2014 04:37 (eleven years ago)
I'll throw open the Sennheiser PX 200-IIi for consideration too. Similar to the PX 100 but with a small closed-ear design and a doughnut vinyl earcup rather than a flat piece of foam. Only a bit heavier and more expensive.
― and in his absence, she (Lee626), Monday, 29 September 2014 06:09 (eleven years ago)
Do you mean one of the regular grado? iGrado got discontinued, sadly.
― OU281 (Jon Lewis), Monday, 29 September 2014 11:37 (eleven years ago)
Fuck yeah my new headphone listening setup:
Laptop -> Dragonfly DAC -> Little Dot I+ headphone amp -> AKG K550s -> my ears, in my head, on my torso, on my massive beanbag.
― DISMISSED AS CHANCE (NotEnough), Monday, 29 September 2014 14:17 (eleven years ago)
iGrado is discontinued but I think you can still but them directly from the company.
― EZ Snappin, Monday, 29 September 2014 16:30 (eleven years ago)
i bought the last 2 pair on clearance at TekServe for 9 bucks each to squirrel them away against future cord death of my current pair...
― OU281 (Jon Lewis), Monday, 29 September 2014 16:46 (eleven years ago)
seems like there are some on amazon sold by grado?
― ⌘-B (mh), Monday, 29 September 2014 16:47 (eleven years ago)
there are probably a ton still lying around in warehouses after production stopped
― Nhex, Monday, 29 September 2014 16:50 (eleven years ago)
maybe they stopped making them because they can't fit any more in their warehouse
― ⌘-B (mh), Monday, 29 September 2014 16:51 (eleven years ago)
again, I do love them bc it is a bit awk to run around town with legit grados on (esp that burly cord) and the iG is really close to the same sound but w/o the physical burden
― OU281 (Jon Lewis), Monday, 29 September 2014 17:09 (eleven years ago)
I don't see any sign the iGrado has been discontinued - it's available for order on both their US and UK sites as well as from Amazon, with all of those showing them in stock. I think they did briefly stop production awhile back to strengthen the cord. My main beef with these is the inflexible headband that doesn't adjust, much less fold, as well as inavailability of iPhone remote controls. I'm sure they sound good.

And yes, I strongly considered using the SR60e or SR80e as my mobile headphones until I saw pictures of people wearing them. They look deceptively small in photos where they're shown by themselves rather than on someone's head. Whoa, those things are huge. OTOH, one thing I'll credit the likes of Beats and Skullcandy for is making it socially acceptable and even fashionable to walk around in public wearing big headphones, so maybe I'll go that way. The SR80e gets glowing reviews from everyone from high-end audiophile sites to Consumer Reports, and they're affordable too. I'll just have to squash the long cord in my pocket or something.
― and in his absence, she (Lee626), Monday, 29 September 2014 19:44 (eleven years ago)
The long cord is incredibly thick and inconvenient
― 龜, Monday, 29 September 2014 19:45 (eleven years ago)
yeah it's the thickness more than anything, and the attendant heaviness/inflexibility of the cord.
― OU281 (Jon Lewis), Monday, 29 September 2014 19:57 (eleven years ago)
I have an ancient pair of Koss PRO/4AAA 'phones (not to be confused with several similarly-named cans) I've had since I was a teenager, and these have a very effective all-purpose cord solution, a single coiled cable that's about 1m long and not too thick, but stretches easily to become five times that length. These remain the best-sounding headphones I've ever heard and I still use them for home listening. They're also incredibly comfortable, with air-filled vinyl earcups and headband that are perfectly shaped. Unfortunately they no longer make replacement pneumatic earcups and they've become hard and inflexible. Also, it has a large home-stereo plug rather than a 3.5mm.

Looking for something in the price range of those Grado SR80s, but closed style (I hate having the sound leak out of the cups), any suggestions?
― Nhex, Monday, 29 September 2014 20:43 (eleven years ago)
closed style is harder on your ears wrt tinnitus, fyi. I can't wear closed phones for the most part.
― a drug by the name of WORLD WITHOUT END (Jon Lewis), Monday, 29 September 2014 21:01 (eleven years ago)
I'm pretty cheap, so always looking for decent quality low-end merch. Right now looking for:a) something to replace my trusty Sennheiser 201s, the cushions have been tearing up after about six years of loyal service. As mentioned above, preferred closed style. I don't mind going up a rung to the $50-100 tier of phones, feel boring just getting the 202 HDsb) sweat-resistant Bluetooth headphones - cups or behind-the-neck preferred - for exercise. Earbuds never stay on. Don't care about closed or open for this since it'll be half-drowned out by the radio at the gym anyway, ~$50? (Or am I better off getting the cheapest possible garbage since they're not gonna last anyway?)

― Nhex, Monday, 6 October 2014 04:07 (eleven years ago)
are there any over-ear headphones out there that have both wireless and wire connections? im after something i can use when djing in clubs (with wire, so no lag) and for out mooching about walking the dog (wireless, lag away)
― NI, Monday, 6 October 2014 15:27 (eleven years ago)
You probably just want to get a bluetooth receiver thing and stick it to the side of your headphones
― ⌘-B (mh), Monday, 6 October 2014 15:37 (eleven years ago)
ok ta, didnt even know that was a thing
― NI, Monday, 6 October 2014 15:57 (eleven years ago)

too early to say for sure, but i'm loving these new LSTN headphones.
https://experienceheadphones.com/media/wysiwyg/smartwave/blog/lstn-wood-troubadour-headphones-00.jpg
great sound quality, they look nice, and they're much cheaper than, say, beats-by-dre headphones.
― Daniel, Esq 2, Tuesday, 23 December 2014 03:45 (eleven years ago)
those LSTN ones look very nice. Trying to decide between those and something like this:

thoughts?

they look like a den
― j., Thursday, 25 December 2014 22:11 (eleven years ago)
haha. so far, sound quality is great on lstn headphones. bass prominent, but not overwhelming. highs not tinny. lots of room and space in the sound. love them so far (but, to be fair, i'm in part comparing them to my last set of headphones, a skullcandy over-ear pair that wasn't v good).
― Daniel, Esq 2, Friday, 26 December 2014 00:36 (eleven years ago)
moodles, not sure if you've made any decisions yet, and i can't vouch for the seller, but i stumbled on this seemingly amazing sale price for lstn troubador headphones on amazon. was trying to compare the ones you mentioned to lstn. but $60.00? seems too low to be true.
― Daniel, Esq 2, Friday, 26 December 2014 20:37 (eleven years ago)
those headphones are similar to the LSTN ones, but are from a different company. It may well be a good deal, not sure.
― Free Me's Electric Trumpet (Moodles), Friday, 26 December 2014 20:52 (eleven years ago)
you're right! sorry about that; something in the chain-of-links led me to believe it was a genuine lstn.
― Daniel, Esq 2, Friday, 26 December 2014 20:54 (eleven years ago)
so I got the Sennheiser HD 558s linked above. the first pair I got had some weird farty distortion in the low mids so I sent them back. Just got the replacement pair and they sound much better. The are very comfortable and light and have a remarkable amount of sound separation. Everything sounds very spacious. They could maybe use a bit more oomph in the low end but I think I can get it right with some creative equalization.
― Free Me's Electric Trumpet (Moodles), Tuesday, 13 January 2015 23:10 (eleven years ago)
finally soldered up an O2+ODAC. it's forced me to get rid of my crappy skullcandy headphones at work bc my computer can finally drive my nicer headphones. also forced me to check the output impedance of the headphone stage on my amp at home and it is about 10x greater than my headphones o_O.

Good workout earbuds $100 or less? I'm more interested in paying for sound than paying for ability to stay in my ear while I'm doing backflips -- my workouts aren't really that motion-heavy.
― www.ramenclassaction.com (man alive), Thursday, 19 May 2016 20:29 (ten years ago)
don't spend money on workout earbuds. i'm happy with the panasonic ergofit plus. sound is good and the l jack is very sturdy.
― map, Thursday, 19 May 2016 20:37 (ten years ago)
I'm kind of pissed that I spend $60 last year on JBL Synchro Reflects, they sound pretty bad. I was hoping for something with just a little more presence.
