Dominic Chianese starred in a Woody Allen play in '04 (one I never saw or read):

this is otm. tony doesn't die onscreen, so he's technically alive at the end of the show. but he might die in 5 minutes, or it might be 5 years. i think one of the points of the show is that living that life will eventually have consequences for you and the people you love. he can't escape it

k3vin k., Thursday, 28 August 2014 14:24 (nine years ago) link

And seeing him get shot would be to bring an end to that anxiety, but instead it ends with that ongoing anxiety itself.

no, the seconds of blackness can very easily be read as his death

the show doesn't end when it cuts to black, it ends when the credits roll

those seconds of blackness are part of the show's narrative

socki (s1ocki), Thursday, 28 August 2014 14:37 (nine years ago) link

that's a fair reading, i don't dispute that

k3vin k., Thursday, 28 August 2014 14:38 (nine years ago) link

well then you are a gentleman sir.

lag∞n, Thursday, 28 August 2014 14:44 (nine years ago) link

surely the show ends when the credits are over not when they start.

ryan, Thursday, 28 August 2014 14:46 (nine years ago) link

just sayin

ryan, Thursday, 28 August 2014 14:47 (nine years ago) link

if you have any evidence that the sopranos credits sequences have ever sustained the narrative, i'm all ears

socki (s1ocki), Thursday, 28 August 2014 14:52 (nine years ago) link

His mother was named "livia" which is awfully close to "live" and I think derives from "olive." Tony soprano live / tony sopranolive / tony sopran olive

Best answer I got

The thing everybody always leaves out is that the final episode is crappy and anti-climactic no matter whether he lives or dies, and that the final sequence is quite boringly directed.

Frederik B, Thursday, 28 August 2014 15:00 (nine years ago) link

That's the most bonkers theory yet!

Furio has uncovered a lost Guercino masterpiece worth millions, I didn't know he was such a renaissance man IRL.

i have a theory
that david chase didn't intend the ending to be ambiguous but the public outcry/confusion made him butthurt and reticent about it

slam dunk, Wednesday, 15 April 2015 15:01 (nine years ago) link

Chase basically confirms that huge blog post about it saying Tony got shot.

pplains, Wednesday, 15 April 2015 15:04 (nine years ago) link

Nah, he's saying that it's one reading of it, and def one reading he intended. I don't think that many people have said that there was nothing menacing about Members Only Guy, or that it wasn't intended to remind of us what Bobby said in Soprano Home Movies about not hearing the final bullet.

Either way, it's a crappy ending. Having two readings of something doesn't really matter when neither reading is interesting.

Frederik B, Wednesday, 15 April 2015 22:02 (nine years ago) link

It's one of the best-edited TV sequences ever.

Chris L, Wednesday, 15 April 2015 23:05 (nine years ago) link

I love the ending

set the standard for how to conclude a long-running series imo

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 15 April 2015 23:19 (nine years ago) link

Ending has really grown on me. I was pretty ambivalent when I first saw it.

One bad call from barely losing to (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 15 April 2015 23:52 (nine years ago) link

I like that his goal w/ the final scene was to evoke a feeling rather than to provide some narrative explanation

gybe horses (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 16 April 2015 12:54 (nine years ago) link

There's only 3 minutes left in the episode! Why is nothing ~happening~?? Why is Meadow taking SO LONG to park her car??? Who is that dude in the jacket???? WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN?!?!?

gybe horses (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 16 April 2015 12:55 (nine years ago) link

he's either going to be shot Then or SOMEDAY or expecting it FOREVER. What's ambiguous?

the increasing costive borborygmi (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 16 April 2015 15:58 (nine years ago) link

we will all be shot one day. shot right in the heart by death's death gun. but the symbolism of the onion rings.

did you end up watching the whole series, Dr.?
