Yeah "verbing weirds language" is awes.

I just find it irritating. Changing nouns into verbs has been around in English forever and the legion of denominal verbs produced are so unremarkable most people don't even realize they originated that way. It's like exclaiming about how wacky it is that you can form an adverb from an adjective by adding -ly to the end.

lol i came here to mention the ice bucket thing but i wasn't sure if it belonged in this thread. it feels like 2% about the cause in question and 98% celebrity circle jerk of "see we can be wacky too".

I wouldn't mind it so much if 30% of my news feed didn't involve people posting "people criticizing the ice bucket challenge need to stfu - it's for a good cause" eyeroll posts

This made me change my mind about it. I was pretty annoyed with it at first, more so when I got "challenged" over the weekend, but reading her take on it has me reconsidering, particularly if the stats about how much money has been raised ends up being true.

Thankfully my whole FB is a) people talking about how much the Ferguson PD sucks b) fashion editors' Insta holiday snaps c) suckage of current UK government and d) zero instances of ice bucket.

It did raise a lot of money and I'm fine with that (although some will argue "fundraising cannibalism") but there's too little actual education going on alongside of it. I would argue the same amount of money could have easily been raised with a less awkward campaign - likewise, I do hope there's a plan to revisit the donation solicitation periodically so it's not quickly forgotten. I don't know much about the particular charity in question other than about 26% of their funds go to research.

Yes, I know, it's social media, nobody's asking for a tl;dr screed, but folks seem to conflate 'awareness' with saying 'hey btw this thing still exists'.

This is definitely, at least, better than the shitty 'post pics of your bras' or other campaigns that didn't even make any attempt to raise money at all, though.

it was supposed to be "donate $100 or dunk your head in water". Lots of friends I know couldn't donate cos they simply don't have the funds. I just hate the implication that you're supposed to respond to the challenge or you look like a dick. many of my friends have countered by sharing ALS links instead if they couldn't donate.

are there any nominated celebs who have said 'fuck off, I'm not doing that'? This kind of just a bit of fun/for a good cause feels like a constant presence at my workplace, so depressing to me that you can be as rich an successful as Bill Gates and there is still no escape. Margaret Thatcher otm
