Did you see solo Ex man is playing Brighton? https://www.facebook.com/events/1468611930055399/?fref=ts

emil.y, Monday, 4 August 2014 14:21 (eleven years ago)

oh look at that! thanks for the heads up

john wahey (NickB), Monday, 4 August 2014 14:37 (eleven years ago)

Hi Brighton people. I has a question(s). Do any of you commute to London? If so, how awful is the journey? Are there seats on the train? How often is the train late? Etc.

I ask cos we have been talking about moving to Brighton for a while now and previous plan was to just up sticks quit job and everything but I quite like where I work at the moment and my boss is one of my best friends so I'd feel very guilty about just upping and leaving 4 months after she got me the job. I've done the commute the other way round plenty of times (a previous job was at a company with a Brighton office and I used to go down there once a week) and that was fine, I had an entire carriage to myself sometimes, but I doubt it'll be much like that the other way round!

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Monday, 4 August 2014 14:45 (eleven years ago)

Where in London? Even commuting up from my lady's place to London Bridge a few days in a row knocked me out, but I know one ILXor's brother lives there and commutes every day.+

Andrew Farrell, Monday, 4 August 2014 14:50 (eleven years ago)

Craigo Boingo works in Crawley, which is maybe 3/4 of the journey to London? (I am bad at judging measurements, though.) I will direct his attention to this thread if he doesn't see it before tonight.

From my perspective our quality of life definitely dropped when the job moved, but then we were exceptionally lucky before as he was working five minutes saunter down the road. I do know people who do the commute fairly easily, and if you've done the distance before, just the other way, you probably have some idea of whether or not you'd be okay with it. But personally I would say avoid it if you possibly can because it's hideously depressing and awful.

emil.y, Monday, 4 August 2014 14:53 (eleven years ago)

my neighbours on both sides do that commute every day and i have to say i don't really see a whole lot of them during the week. think major train delays happen every two or three months? landslides, floods, shitey infrastructure, that sort of thing

john wahey (NickB), Monday, 4 August 2014 14:54 (eleven years ago)

My experience is that there's generally seats on the train, as Brighton's the first stop, if you turn up 10 minutes early - but those 10 minutes can seem an awful imposition depending on when you need to get up for. Of course if you need to change in East Croydon or something, you probably won't get a seat on the second leg.

On the way back, trains do start in Victoria and (generally?) don't in London Bridge, so that makes a difference. You might get a seat after Croydon / Clapham / Gatwick though.

The only serious train problems I've noticed are if she's going back to Brighton on a Sunday, when it seems like toss a coin to see if there's going to be a train or a bus.

Andrew Farrell, Monday, 4 August 2014 14:57 (eleven years ago)

I work between Liverpool St and Old St so London Bridge isn't that far away.

I finish at 5:30 so I don't think I'd be that late home, it's the getting up early that'd kill me I think.

just make you sure you don't try to emulate this venal fool if you do, quite why someone who could easily afford to pay for a chauffeur driven car every day would risk prosecution to save a few grand a year is a mystery but such is life

Ah, well there are gates at Brighton station so that'd be tricky anyway.

preston park doesn't have a barrier though so

john wahey (NickB), Monday, 4 August 2014 15:20 (eleven years ago)

I occasionally work off Fleet Street and have to get a train at 07:24 to get there around 9am. It's easy getting a seat going but rarely that easy coming back. As was said, after Gatwick it tends to empty out a bit. It's not too bad I suppose but I'm loathe to go for a bigger commute than my Crawley one (50 mins one way with 1 change). Thankfully (as I was relocated from the Brighton Office) work pay my travel too, which is a relief.

Having said that the tunnel at Balcombe is prone to collapsing in extreme weather. Nothing more depressing than being stuck with 1000+ people in the car park at Haywards Heath waiting for a RRBS.

I think I worked out I would need the 7:24 train. I used to have to get the tube at 7:45 to get to work in Battersea on time (but I usually wasn't on time) so it's 20 minutes earlier than my previous job, but then I hated my previous job and the commute was at least part of that.

Gonna have to think about this a bit more I think. Thanks for answers :)

Of course the season ticket would be more than an Oyster travelcard as well. And Brighton council tax is the same as Waltham Forest or was last time I looked, so I wouldn't save any money there either. But there is the chance my wife would be able to hold down a job in Brighton since she wouldn't have to deal with the tube. So we might end up better off overall. Anyway enough rambling internal monologue on a message board, I should probably pretend to do some work for a bit.

matt or anyone else want my ticket for slint on tuesday night? gonna be in manchester that night so i can't make it. don't want any money for it, just don't want to see it go to waste

Fizzles, Thursday, 7 August 2014 12:47 (eleven years ago)

If no-one else wants it I will grab it, and figure out a way of paying you back another time. Tell you what, I’ll get you on the guestlist for Mirage ;)

Don't worry about it, it's not like you've never seen us before! Got a couple of Oct/Nov dates lined up, too, so you can make it up to us, heh.

That thing at the De La Warr looks ace, but yeah, no way I can really make it either.

john wahey (NickB), Wednesday, 17 September 2014 11:57 (eleven years ago)

Wire & Swans perform Drill

^ should be a hoot though

john wahey (NickB), Wednesday, 17 September 2014 12:06 (eleven years ago)

That looks quite good. I saw Claudio Simonetti's Goblin do Suspiria at Union Chapel a few weeks ago, that was fun, enjoyed the Q&A before it as well - I didn't know Simonetti had done Italo Disco stuff, and in fact I had one of his tracks in my mp3 library but didn't know it was him. It was Mark Moore of S'Express who asked him about it!

To my shame I'd never managed to watch all of Suspiria without falling asleep until that night. Mainly due to attempting to watch it late at night while stoned and/or drunk.

so so sweaty at that last show, need to source some sort of ice vest

john wahey (NickB), Tuesday, 30 September 2014 16:56 (eleven years ago)

I am duty-bound as promoter to point out this fine show in the parish this Friday:

Cosines / Slum Of Legs / Keel Her / Grubs
@ The West Hill Hall, Brighton
£4adv/£5door
Bring Your Own Booze

Cosines are good synthy electronic indie pop, occasional glam bounce and motorik wigouts, vague Camera Obscura influences balancing out Stereolab vibes.

Slum of Legs are emil.y's band and as modesty forbids her to say they are pretty bloody special if any of u locals have yet to see them.

Keel Her is an occasional R Stevie Moore collaborator who makes brill stoned DIY bedroom pop.

Grubs include a Joanna Gruesome and a Trust Fund person and do loads of catchy sub-90 second earworms.

Bring Your Own Booze is cheap and great but also potentially lethal. Curfew is 10:30pm, which may save you from booze death.

Oh damn, Drill Folly is great but some friends are playing at Fitz's and I've missed them loads of times now so I'm booked in at that.

emil.y, Friday, 5 December 2014 16:51 (eleven years ago)

Ah, small world, my friends put that on - where you there? I am currently in recovery mode.

Chewshabadoo, Saturday, 6 December 2014 13:28 (eleven years ago)

Were!

Chewshabadoo, Saturday, 6 December 2014 13:29 (eleven years ago)

I am so hungover. Silver Apples tonight?

emil.y, Saturday, 6 December 2014 15:31 (eleven years ago)

Shameless self-promotion, but this gig is a benefit for the excellent Brighton Music For Kids organisation. Chewshabadoo & co will be DJing Italo cover versions, and emil.y is in As Yet Untitled Supergroup *and* Slum of Legs..

Chewshabadoo, Tuesday, 9 December 2014 00:39 (eleven years ago)

I'll be there if I'm not in agony (toothache). On antibiotics that don't go with booze :-/

Basically / I Don't Wanna Be / An mp3 / 3-2-0 kb / ps (Craigo Boingo), Tuesday, 9 December 2014 20:45 (eleven years ago)

Seeing as my divorce became official today, I think going to 'The Ex' tomorrow is the most apt thing that I can do, so I will be there.

Chewshabadoo, Tuesday, 9 December 2014 21:27 (eleven years ago)

yay! 95% certain that i'll be there but my mother-in-law died this morning (long illness, we're okay) so there's a chance i might need to stay in - apols if i no-show

sosmix klopp (NickB), Tuesday, 9 December 2014 22:18 (eleven years ago)
