i actually called the farmer who oiled that gate all types of horrible cunt, cursing them aloud under the broiling sun, while hopping up and down on my bashed and woeful toe, but i have that post-run calm now and all is forgiven

I don't think I've ever gotten the knee thing.

Been playing around with Strava some, specifically the heat map feature. It's cool.

someone else bashing out the miles running up and down the shore
― john wahey (NickB), Wednesday, 23 July 2014 20:35 (eleven years ago)
suffering from massive fatigue here, tried to run to work the last couple of days (4.5 miles) and i've got half the way there and had to give up and walk the remainder. nothing left in my legs at all, i'm just toast. everything aches and i have no energy for anything... like i got halfway down a corridor at work today just walking to fetch something and had to stop and lean against a wall for a micro-doze. the heat's not helping, but i think it's just the accummulation of 3 high-mileage months of running and a bit of a stressy time at work. going to take a few days off and get a load of sleep and try again on sunday maybe.
― john wahey (NickB), Wednesday, 23 July 2014 20:44 (eleven years ago)
Time off should help. Sometimes I need like a week to recharge.
― Jeff, Wednesday, 23 July 2014 20:50 (eleven years ago)
Did my first stroller run today with Ivy. It was a harder effort than I thought it would be. I was moving along at 8:20 pace for the first 2.5 miles but then had to bring it back down. Fun though.
― Jeff, Sunday, 27 July 2014 17:37 (eleven years ago)
Does anyone here use the special sport wash detergents for their running gear? Some of my older shirts are starting to... not smell very good, although the fabric is still in excellent shape.
― erry red flag (f. hazel), Sunday, 27 July 2014 20:22 (eleven years ago)
I actually only wash my running stuff every 2-3 runs. Usually just get right in the shower, take them off, rinse for a couple minutes then hang dry. Works pretty well IMO! Is that disgusting?
― tobo73, Monday, 28 July 2014 02:37 (eleven years ago)
Once the stink lock gets built in, just toss them. It's inevitable.
― Jeff, Monday, 28 July 2014 03:18 (eleven years ago)
Eh, I had some shirts where that happened — a round of washing at 60 celsius fixed it.
I got myself a pair of short-shorts for running, because Norway's been way, way too warm the last month. Turns out my big ol' squatter's thighs rub together and chafe. Damn it all.
― Øystein, Monday, 28 July 2014 03:21 (eleven years ago)
Yeah, that's what I thought might be the answer. I took a couple running shirts on an extended hiking trip (constant wear with no washing for a week) and I think at this point they cannot be saved. Of course if I'm going to toss them anyway, maybe I'll try running them through the dishwater on hot or something.
And tobo73, I do that after a run... rinse out my gear in the shower, wring it out and hang it up to dry. But then I wash it later in the week before using it again.

i wear dirty shorts tho sometimes
― lag∞n, Monday, 18 August 2014 21:28 (eleven years ago)
I'm traveling so I just tried the showering with them, then hanging to dry. Came back to my hotel room to that familiar smell...
― Jeff, Monday, 18 August 2014 21:58 (eleven years ago)
rinsing them out immediately post-run and letting them air dry certainly causes less stink than tossing them in a hamper post-run and washing them at the end of the week... some of my newer gear I could probably get a second run out of before washing in this fashion. but some of my older shirts just instantly smell terrible as soon as they get damp, so that won't work with them.
also probably depends on the conditions you're running in. here now I go running for around an hour right after sunset and it's still about 95F/35C and humid, so things get gross pretty quick. in december when I'm heading out in 55F/13C and dry it's going to be easier to skip a wash.
― erry red flag (f. hazel), Monday, 18 August 2014 22:06 (eleven years ago)
I think I just stink more than most people. And sweat, boy do I sweat. Almost every run when I'm done, I'm completely soaked from head to toe. My shoes squeak because of the puddles in the bottom.
― Jeff, Monday, 18 August 2014 22:18 (eleven years ago)
I travel overseas about 2 weeks every month for work, but try to keep running 3 or 4 days a week where I am. I do the whole - put the running clothes in the hotel shower, pour on shampoo, wring em out, hang em up. I normally get about 3 runs out of that technique until it's a bit nasty. I also feel bad for the hotel cleaner who has to come in and work around my dripping stuff...
― paulhw, Tuesday, 19 August 2014 00:07 (eleven years ago)
Worth adding that I couldn't imagine running in new cities without studying mapmyrun in the note beforehand and GPS on my phone. The phone was crucial for a ripped calf in Sao Paulo and getting lost in the dark in Seville. Sounds fun and exotic, but wasn't so much at the time...
― paulhw, Tuesday, 19 August 2014 00:12 (eleven years ago)
I do extensive research before every trip. I love running in new cities.
― Jeff, Tuesday, 19 August 2014 01:30 (eleven years ago)
My favorites (again - there's a lot of shitty times that comes from traveling a lot):
- Laps of Tiergarten in Berlin- Fairmount Park in Philadelphia- along the canals in London- along the Lagan river in Belfast- Centennial Park in Sydney- Chattanooga river park run- Doha, Qatar corniche - only in winter though
Worst:- trying to run in Moscow, any time of year (no parks, horrible drivers)- Istanbul (chased by stray dogs, dead end sidewalks)- Laos (stray dogs, too hot)- Athens (no open space I could find)- the time I tried to run in Tripoli but was stopped by armed police
― paulhw, Tuesday, 19 August 2014 02:05 (eleven years ago)
run the banks of the golden horn in Istanbul imho
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 19 August 2014 14:37 (eleven years ago)
just tried to go running and there were millions of tiny bugs getting in my eyes and mouth and i had to turn back after like .5 miles it was gross
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 20 August 2014 23:48 (eleven years ago)
My face looks like a poorly maintained gnat cemetery after some runs.
― Jeff, Thursday, 21 August 2014 00:07 (eleven years ago)
i aint about that!

whats the best iphone run tracking app, havent used my garmin in forever and cant bring myself to i think cause of the terrible interface, bought an armband gonna give the phone a go
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 27 August 2014 19:07 (eleven years ago)
If I forget my garmin, I just use the garmin app to keep all my data in the same universe.
― Jeff, Wednesday, 27 August 2014 19:08 (eleven years ago)
is the app good, im willing to start over, im breaking up w the watch i think
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 27 August 2014 19:10 (eleven years ago)
well see how much i enjoy having a phone strapped to my arm
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 27 August 2014 19:12 (eleven years ago)
It's pretty basic. I don't use any of the feedback from it while running, basically it's just my fallback plan if I forget my watch.
Maybe try the strava app?
― Jeff, Wednesday, 27 August 2014 19:38 (eleven years ago)
think i'm going to get back into a little distance running. haven't ran over a 5k in at least a year.

I should hit 200 miles this month, first double century month since September 2013! Really feel like I'm back in the groove with mileage and speed workouts during the week.
― Jeff, Thursday, 28 August 2014 11:18 (eleven years ago)
200 miles a month is a pretty decent groove alright, respect.
I've only been able to level mileage and speed over the past year, at most. Hoping to be able to increase both from now on, though a new job with increased commuting will probable interfere.
I use Runkeeper, it does the job but it's nothing fancy. Would like to shell out for a Garmin Forerunner watch...
Regarding 'locked in stink' in running clothes, I've heard that an overnight soak in water with vinegar, followed by a regular wash, will do the job. Haven't tried it out yet, but will do.
― willem, Thursday, 28 August 2014 11:40 (eleven years ago)
I need to try that. Last shirt got stink lock after about 5 runs. Not sustainable.
― Jeff, Thursday, 28 August 2014 11:43 (eleven years ago)
if you've got dedicated running clothes then why care about the stink
― gbx, Thursday, 28 August 2014 13:27 (eleven years ago)
A few reasons. It can make be bother me while running, seriously, the reek gets to me sometimes. Wipe your face on your sleeve and get a whiff, not pleasant. Running in itself is unpleasant enough without me being a stink factory.
I do run with other people and groups sometimes. There is an acceptable amount of agreed upon sweat and smell, but if it is making me nauseous, then I would not want to inflict that on them as well.
But most of the time, I do just wear the shirt anyway. Or sometimes I buy a new one.
― Jeff, Thursday, 28 August 2014 13:53 (eleven years ago)
it's weird, none of the kit that i've had for the past four or five years smells bad at all. either that or i'm now just immune to my own stench
― john wahey (NickB), Thursday, 28 August 2014 14:08 (eleven years ago)
200-mile month is awesome, Jeff. I think I'm going to hit 60 this month? If I go running tonight, I'll have done 24 runs in 8 weeks, which I'm really pleased about... getting into the habit of three runs a week no matter what, slowly building mileage. Once I get to 20 miles a week, I'll start doing some speedwork. My goal is a sub two-hour half marathon in January.
― erry red flag (f. hazel), Thursday, 28 August 2014 14:43 (eleven years ago)
i'm doing my first ever 50 mile race on saturday. pretty terrified - every time i think about it i get palpitations and feel like i'm going to be sick. it'll be round the trails of suffolk, which will be good cos it's supposedly mostly as flat as a pancake, plus i've never been there before so it'll be nice just soaking in the feel of the place. it goes round aldeburgh so maybe i'll be corny and stick some britten on my ipod. weather looks good and my legs feel okay-ish, so my plan is to just plug away at 10 or 11 minute mile pace for as long as possible and just try to hang in there. hope there'll be a few other people going slow so i've got someone to talk to and keep me going. oh, and to stop me from getting lost. arrggh! brrrrr! ho-leeeey fuck!
― john wahey (NickB), Tuesday, 2 September 2014 16:22 (eleven years ago)
damn yo that is very far!
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 2 September 2014 16:26 (eleven years ago)
im sure u will have no problem finding people going very slow fwiw from what ive heard abt these things
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 2 September 2014 16:27 (eleven years ago)
you're almost definitely right but i guess my worry on that score is it might be a tiny field and everyone gets strung out really quickly. it's the first year this particular race has been run, so i don't really know how many people to expect.
― john wahey (NickB), Tuesday, 2 September 2014 16:40 (eleven years ago)
obv. i'm focussing on the negative though cos of ye olde creeping ~terror~! i need to stop that
― john wahey (NickB), Tuesday, 2 September 2014 16:41 (eleven years ago)
eh whatre u gonna do, once u get there u just run regardless
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 2 September 2014 16:42 (eleven years ago)
sounds like quite the experience, good luck!
― slip jig (seandalai), Tuesday, 2 September 2014 16:49 (eleven years ago)
once u get there u just run regardless
well run, vomit, crawl, weep most probably, but just keep moving forward and try not to die, that's my mantra
thanks seandalai!
― john wahey (NickB), Tuesday, 2 September 2014 16:51 (eleven years ago)
Very cool - I'd love to skip the marathon and try one of those but, man, the amount of training to build up to that distance is daunting. Good luck!!
