I have a friend who says either 'ladyfriend' or 'womanfriend' because he cannot stand 'girlfriend.'

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Thursday, 2 March 2006 17:54 (twenty years ago)

I need to see Crossroads. Actually, I wonder if Crossroads and 8 Mile might be a good double feature.

Until I posted it, Britney was the spectre haunting this thread.

I really don't like "lady" for some reason.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 2 March 2006 17:55 (twenty years ago)

I love "girlfriend". I'm going to say it even after I'm married.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 2 March 2006 17:55 (twenty years ago)

i use ladies and fellas.

i also use "girl" and "woman" when talking about a girl or woman and for me it's not an age thing it's a maturity thing. i've dated 32 year old girls and 25 year old women. hopefully there's something going on with this 28 year old i've been seeing around. i'm leaning 60/40 towards her being a girl.

chicago kevin (chicago kevin), Thursday, 2 March 2006 17:57 (twenty years ago)

Not "lady", "the ladies".

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 2 March 2006 17:57 (twenty years ago)

chick

Jeff. (Jeff), Thursday, 2 March 2006 17:57 (twenty years ago)

worst

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 2 March 2006 17:58 (twenty years ago)

"The ladies" is one of those words that shouldn't be made singular, like "scissors" or "pants".

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 2 March 2006 17:58 (twenty years ago)

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 2 March 2006 17:58 (twenty years ago)

Saffire - now those are ladies!

Eazy (Eazy), Thursday, 2 March 2006 17:59 (twenty years ago)

I use "lady" in more the regal context (Lady XXXX) and saying silly shit like "Hello, lady, nice to see you."

Never ever ever never ever "ladyfriend." I called a girlfriend that once, in her presence, and that was enough!

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Thursday, 2 March 2006 17:59 (twenty years ago)

I am a big fan of "lady" but it DOES make me grab for a full skirt to lift when I'm going up stairs...you know, to keep mud off the hem and show a little ankle at the same time.

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 2 March 2006 17:59 (twenty years ago)

I can never hear "ladyfriend" again without thinking of The Big Lebowski.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Thursday, 2 March 2006 18:00 (twenty years ago)

True!

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 2 March 2006 18:01 (twenty years ago)

Mmmmm... ankle.

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Thursday, 2 March 2006 18:03 (twenty years ago)

"Lady. I'm your knight in shining armor. And I love you. You have made me what I am aaaaaand -- I am yours"

vs

"Lady of the morning
Love shines in your eyes
Sparkling, clear, and lovely
You're my lady"

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 2 March 2006 18:03 (twenty years ago)

Sparkling, clear and lovely? Is she a mountain stream? The winner is Kenny Rogers by a mile, for evoking more chivalrous times.

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 2 March 2006 18:04 (twenty years ago)

Don't you mean "you're my LAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAADAAAAAAAAAAY?"

xpost: Oh I thought that was Styx! hahaha

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Thursday, 2 March 2006 18:05 (twenty years ago)

Is there anything worse than "mujer" though? Let's be honest.

It is! I did mean that.

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 2 March 2006 18:06 (twenty years ago)

I guess "mujer" isn't so bad, depending on who's saying it.

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 2 March 2006 18:07 (twenty years ago)

punta?

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Thursday, 2 March 2006 18:07 (twenty years ago)

you mean puta?

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 2 March 2006 18:08 (twenty years ago)

yes.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Thursday, 2 March 2006 18:09 (twenty years ago)

yeeeah, that's worse. but that's obviously a pejorative term.

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 2 March 2006 18:17 (twenty years ago)

i mean, i would rather be called "chick" (as gross as it is) than "whore" anyday.

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 2 March 2006 18:17 (twenty years ago)

I don't think "chick" is that bad, really.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 2 March 2006 18:20 (twenty years ago)

(I mean, it depends on the context, obv.)

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 2 March 2006 18:20 (twenty years ago)

Woman just sounds weird, I rarely use it.

Lady, too old fashioned.

I use girl a lot, peppered with some chicks.

Gal reminds me too much of NC.

Jeff. (Jeff), Thursday, 2 March 2006 18:20 (twenty years ago)

You all know I hate the word "buddy" to denote "friend," right? Hate it.

(xp) interesting about the Southernness of "gal," I suppose -- that never really occurred to me since I've reclaimed it

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 2 March 2006 18:21 (twenty years ago)

Doll?

Eazy (Eazy), Thursday, 2 March 2006 18:23 (twenty years ago)

Shiela?

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 2 March 2006 18:25 (twenty years ago)

Bird?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 2 March 2006 18:27 (twenty years ago)

Hey, what about SOW? That's a good one. How about person. If you're using a pronoun, the person's sex is already clear.

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 2 March 2006 18:27 (twenty years ago)

"dudette"

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 2 March 2006 18:28 (twenty years ago)

I would rather be a great person than a great girl/woman/lady/mare.

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 2 March 2006 18:29 (twenty years ago)

Ultimately, though, I'm not insulted by any of these.

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 2 March 2006 18:30 (twenty years ago)

XX?

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 2 March 2006 18:30 (twenty years ago)

You know, as in the chromosomes. "That was one fiiiiiine dos equis bartending at the Empty Bottle last night."

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 2 March 2006 18:31 (twenty years ago)

Please refer to me by my identification code, 82375538.

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 2 March 2006 18:31 (twenty years ago)

You're my milllllkmaid of the morrrrrning...

Eazy (Eazy), Thursday, 2 March 2006 18:33 (twenty years ago)

I didn't see your bar-code tattoo on your forehead in that picture!

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 2 March 2006 18:33 (twenty years ago)

Amanda, you're a shining example of your sex.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 2 March 2006 18:34 (twenty years ago)

It's on my neck, not my forehead. You couldn't see it through the purple turtleneck sweater.

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 2 March 2006 18:35 (twenty years ago)

Note: Trader Joe's boxed sweet potato bisque soup is both 1) very tasty 2) very smooth and 3) very filling, for a simple pureed vegetable soup. (I just tried it today.) Thumbs up.

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 2 March 2006 18:41 (twenty years ago)

scratch that "both" - i added an extra.

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 2 March 2006 18:41 (twenty years ago)

I like those TJ boxed soups, too.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 2 March 2006 18:41 (twenty years ago)

Good to know - I haven't opened my soup boxes yet. They don't have to be fridged until after they're open, right?

Eazy (Eazy), Thursday, 2 March 2006 18:43 (twenty years ago)

Correctamundo.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 2 March 2006 18:44 (twenty years ago)

For the $2.99 or whatever you pay for 'em, you get 3 or 4 good bowls of tasty, low calorie soup. Can't argue with that. These really should be more popular, if people weren't needlessly terrified of bright orange soup. This guy in the kitchen had the balls to sneer at me and ask what "the heck" I was eating. Whatever, hoss -- my lunch is better than that guy's anyday.

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 2 March 2006 18:45 (twenty years ago)

dos equis it shall be from this day forward.
