I was wondering whether the world cup's simply too big to be exciting all the way through? The decent-but-no-chance-of-winning sides have to go out some time - if they cause shocks early on the knock-outs risk being a procession; if it's early that makes the group stages a bit dull but you get the big guns squaring up later. We got lucky this time that the 2nd round was such a scrap.
