They played two group rounds back thenOK. That second group round did not equate to quarterfinals. So guess they went out twice.
Has anyone else ever looked at the symmetries or pattern of the finals from 1970-1990? Do you see?

James Redd:
They had four groups of four teams, two of each group progressed = eight teams left. Those eight were placed in two groups of four teams for the second round. The two group winners played the final, the two second placed played for 3rd.

I'm sure. Meant you had the odd situation of Argentina needing to beat Peru by a five-goal margin to make the final in '78. Which they did. In '82, they expanded to 24 teams, so the second group phase was 4 groups of 3, winners going into semis. Fully restored knock-out phase in '86, when the 12 first-stage qualifiers were augmented by the four best third-place teams to make up the last 16. This persisted for 1990/94, and then we had the first 32-nation WC in France '98.
Strangest thing I've learned about old WCs recently: all QFs in 1966/70 kicked off at the same time. NKOR 5-3 POR at the same time as Rattin getting sent off at Wembley. No staggering of kick-offs for TV.
