I'm not second guessing anything tbh, they did well to make it out of the group despite altidore's injury, and the defense, which was for months the obvious weak spot, could not hold out forever

Also, assuming they've been sat in ice baths since Sunday night, Costa Rica have surely got one hell of a fifth act in them...

Wish Rio Ferdinand would stop saying "it's like watching a premier league game". Like fuck is it, about a million times better.

fullbacks that can't defend is a common sight in the EPL.

Yedlin is one of those prospects that MLS will want too much money for and he'll stay in the league until 2018

Re: Yedlin - We are allegedly in a world where Fulham want to pay £10million for Ross McCormack. Price tags aren't really much of a thing in football any more.

xps - Yeah, but he's also never played in the English top flight. Fulham, also, are not in the English top flight anymore. Let's see - Tim Ream to Bolton was apparently $2.75m in 2012? MLS could probably double that figure and someone would definitely bite.
― William Bloody Swygart, Tuesday, 1 July 2014 23:03 (twelve years ago)
if this inspires a new generation of yanks (tho tbf last time round was p good too) then you will soon be able to kick a ball on sesame st

Pat Nevin: "They tell me Americans don't like sports they don't win at but surely there is glory in losing like this. Surely this will be the start of a massive change in the country."
imagine he said that bit in a kilt, ginger wig and tam o shanter because it's the scottishest phrase i've ever heard

they're banning guns and religious interference in politics and are keeling waffles and chocolate so tbh they've come out alright on this one

i fucking love how much the USMNT don't want to lose, even when it makes me crazy and want to yell WHY DON'T YOU NOT WANT TO LOSE DURING THE ACTUAL GAME AND ACTUALLY MAYBE YOU KNOW TRY TO FUCKING WIN YOU BLOODY PLONKERS but then I scruff their hair and say ah it's ok
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 1 July 2014 23:11 (twelve years ago)
lol forgot fulham was relegated. i'm optimistic about 'the future of american soccer', it's been exponential growth in interest w/ each world cup and w/ cable and the internet it's easy to follow. silver had a persuasive piece that us soccer has plateaued and there was a sportsnation poll that showed a majority of americans don't think they'll see the us win the world cup in their lifetime (which tbh is in a way a good sign, shows greater sophistication/knowledge on the part of the american market - before the world cup there was a sportsnation poll that showed alot of americans thought the us would win this world cup), but i think it's genuinely established now and there's a very real chance that in the future you're gonna have lawsuit shy schools drop football and replace it w/ soccer and if/when that happens watch out.

curious how it plays out also. anecdotal but it seems like more ppl i know are following the wc in general and not just the us, much more so than prior world cups. i saw a fratboy in a pirlo jersey the other day.
