She could have hit the ball. Gamesmanship pure and simple and OBVIOUS. Did it affect the outcome? It certainly threw Shvedova off for a few games, though Shvedova is such a mental weakling that yes, she'd probably have lost regardless

Obviously not only hit the ball, but to also be competitive. She was clearly not 100% even after and her serve was affected. I don't see the controversy.

Even if it did affect the outcome (which as we agree it did not) you would call the losing player feeble minded for falling for this 'tactic'.

What, players can call for a MTO any time they feel they're losing their timing then? No, that's why there are time rules. You don't get to pause the match unless you're physically incapacitated. All other cases, wait for the damn changeover. If it was serious enough that she couldn't get through the game, she wouldn't have been able to finish the match.
