Incisive observation

Btw, the guy on Univision keeps saying something that sounds like "cebolla." Is there a player whose nickname is "The Onion"?

Things that sound like an onion article but aren't

I missed the Colombia game cos I was out, but having seen the first goal I'm now imagining all the school kids called James in Britain insisting on pronouncing their name HAMEZZ and it's making me smile. Quite drunk tbh.

Nice to hear a balanced Uruguayan perspective.

Because in football, kicks and elbowing are normal – but bites are not.

I see the point he's trying to make but I disagree with the details. Kicks and elbowing are penalized as well and shouldn't be considered normal.

StanM, Sunday, 29 June 2014 09:04 (twelve years ago)

Not sure you do, kicks and elbows can occur as a result of sanctioned movements when playing. Bites can't.

tsrobodo, Sunday, 29 June 2014 09:40 (twelve years ago)

yeah, when's the last time a bite happened organically

Mark de Vrij streaks out into the lead in the Worst Singing of a National Anthem race.

William Bloody Swygart, Sunday, 29 June 2014 15:55 (twelve years ago)

lol yeah
It's Stefan though

willem, Sunday, 29 June 2014 15:56 (twelve years ago)

Ah...

I think I did hear somebody making an ill-considered journey into their upper register during the end of the Mexican anthem, though, possibly Ochoa or Marquez.

William Bloody Swygart, Sunday, 29 June 2014 16:00 (twelve years ago)

Really looking forward to a game with less baggage.

Popture, Sunday, 29 June 2014 16:02 (twelve years ago)

do u like green ez & jam (darraghmac), Sunday, 29 June 2014 16:20 (twelve years ago)

Nice counter there. Dutch defence not tight enough though

willem, Sunday, 29 June 2014 16:21 (twelve years ago)

Wait, what's wrong with the ref?

Popture, Sunday, 29 June 2014 16:26 (twelve years ago)

marquez has such a great role popping out from the centre of defence

ogmor, Sunday, 29 June 2014 16:26 (twelve years ago)

Yeah he seems to have forgotten his lenses or something

mexican(?) dudes on commentary for espn approx 1m x better than the usual english dregs

Roberto Spiralli, Sunday, 29 June 2014 16:34 (twelve years ago)

worried Mexico gonna regret not getting something from that early brilliance

clockpuncher (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 29 June 2014 16:34 (twelve years ago)

that kick to a Mexican head was a blatant eh kick to the head. chest height, dangerous play, yellow card, penalty.

do u like green ez & jam (darraghmac), Sunday, 29 June 2014 16:34 (twelve years ago)

eh it was giveable but not 100 percent clear cut i think

clockpuncher (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 29 June 2014 16:35 (twelve years ago)

I don't mean to disagree

but it was 100% clearcut

do u like green ez & jam (darraghmac), Sunday, 29 June 2014 16:38 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, it was give-able, but I can understand erring on the side of caution of giving early penalties in a world cup match. And just a bit after he failed to give another margin call to the Netherlands just outside the box. Ref is facilitating flow to the play and seems to have the respect of the players. In my mind, as someone who has ref'd many games, if you've got those two down, who cares about breaking down each play into a technical right/wrong?

Popture, Sunday, 29 June 2014 16:39 (twelve years ago)

not sure how much precedent there is for penalties given for purely dangerous play rather than obstruction of some kind

ogmor, Sunday, 29 June 2014 16:39 (twelve years ago)

as someone who hasn't reffed any games but cares about defenders kicking ppl in the head, be serious ffs

do u like green ez & jam (darraghmac), Sunday, 29 June 2014 16:40 (twelve years ago)

lol now it balances out I spose

but its not good reffing

do u like green ez & jam (darraghmac), Sunday, 29 June 2014 16:41 (twelve years ago)

there's no one in the stands? is that cuz Spanish fans went home or something

gbx, Sunday, 29 June 2014 16:42 (twelve years ago)

willem, Sunday, 29 June 2014 16:42 (twelve years ago)

The people in the lower stands are going to shaded free seats in the upper stands to escape the heat.

Thanks. Will switch over from Univision, since guy with basso voice over there now is really hard to understand.
