So should he just get the same length of ban every time he does it? xps

Wristy Hurlington (ShariVari), Thursday, 26 June 2014 14:46 (twelve years ago)

That's not how punishment of repeat offenders normally goes down.

Wristy Hurlington (ShariVari), Thursday, 26 June 2014 14:47 (twelve years ago)

something like that, if there must be a ban

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 26 June 2014 14:47 (twelve years ago)

If they're taking in to account his previous then it stands to reason it extends to his club as well. It's for his own good honestly, and he should sort himself out if he has the self awareness to do so/uruguay actually allows him too, otherwise he'll just keep biting people and unlike overly aggressive challenges or elbows which continue to be a problem like in any contact sport this isn't really an argument you should be having when discussing football in any way

are you suggesting uncensured denture ventures ismael?

john wahey (NickB), Thursday, 26 June 2014 14:51 (twelve years ago)

Is LFC really not allowed to sell Suarez? Runs contrary to everything I know about indentured servitude

, Thursday, 26 June 2014 14:52 (twelve years ago)

I don't have a good answer for how to deal with punishing a repeat biter over offences committed across different teams, leagues, tournaments.

but like a year ban for Suarez himself wouldn't be at all ridiculous at this stage, if the impact could be focused and limited to him.

chance that LFC sue him cf mutu/Chelsea?

leave the web boys alone (darraghmac), Thursday, 26 June 2014 14:53 (twelve years ago)

I hope he comfort eats for four months and comes back like Andy Reid in his prime

not lazy but clowning (Suedey 2), Thursday, 26 June 2014 14:54 (twelve years ago)

Why would we sue him? He misses a few games. Big deal.

pandemic, Thursday, 26 June 2014 14:55 (twelve years ago)

the man obviously needs therapy. without that i bet even if you extracted all his teeth, he'd still be going after opponents with a straw

john wahey (NickB), Thursday, 26 June 2014 14:57 (twelve years ago)

LFC could decide not to pay him for four months, as he has damaged his employer. He's not even allowed to train with LFC.

In the airplane over the .CSS (Le Bateau Ivre), Thursday, 26 June 2014 14:58 (twelve years ago)

they are allowed to sell him though

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Thursday, 26 June 2014 15:00 (twelve years ago)

wait lfc can't sell him?

xp

gbx, Thursday, 26 June 2014 15:00 (twelve years ago)

on his birthday, don't give him a cake

lol

pandemic, Thursday, 26 June 2014 15:00 (twelve years ago)

where is this not selling him/denying payment stuff coming from? the guardian comments section and twitter don't count btw.

caek, Thursday, 26 June 2014 15:02 (twelve years ago)

if only Aspas was the insane feral biter we could all be united in our condemnation

btw
- on a pure offence level, don't think ban is harsh
- but do think elbows or raking your studs down someone's leg/balls whatever (the ones that are deemed to be not 'part of the physciality of the game' - that may be the one of the most disingenious argument I've read) should get punished/stigmatised equally as harshly
- if it is a manifestation of mental illness, as some are suggesting, then punishment for it would suggest discrimination?
- communicable disease - fair point obviously but trying to think how many people have even gone on that angle when they were raving about how horrid it is, is that really the bit that people are horrified by it for?

lol at comparing biting to flailing elbows or wild challenges, even in the sports that actually permit you to elbow or kick another person you still aren't allowed to bite them

anonanon, Thursday, 26 June 2014 15:08 (twelve years ago)

even in sports that actually permit you to elbow or kick another person, you still aren't allowed to elbow or kick another person in contexts unrelated to the sport, so fuck off

^ 諷刺 (ken c), Thursday, 26 June 2014 15:10 (twelve years ago)

sorry, fuck off was harsh

^ 諷刺 (ken c), Thursday, 26 June 2014 15:10 (twelve years ago)

lol would have sufficed

^ 諷刺 (ken c), Thursday, 26 June 2014 15:11 (twelve years ago)

^ 諷刺 (ken c), Thursday, 26 June 2014 15:11 (twelve years ago)

if it is a manifestation of mental illness, as some are suggesting, then punishment for it would suggest discrimination?

this is ludicrous. esp since it seems like the "mental illness" in question would almost certainly be a personality disorder, in which case clearly defined consequences for his actions are very appropriate

gbx, Thursday, 26 June 2014 15:11 (twelve years ago)

that's kind of why i put a question mark there - i am not sure where to stand on this.

^ 諷刺 (ken c), Thursday, 26 June 2014 15:12 (twelve years ago)

clearly defined consequnces should be that he gets sectioned, I suppose!

^ 諷刺 (ken c), Thursday, 26 June 2014 15:13 (twelve years ago)

Punishment, in this case banning him from all participation, would suggest he take the time to deal with his problems more than anything else

They should mandate some sort of therapy for a recurring problem like this tbh

not lazy but clowning (Suedey 2), Thursday, 26 June 2014 15:13 (twelve years ago)

fined 100,000 for being mentally ill, otoh

^ 諷刺 (ken c), Thursday, 26 June 2014 15:14 (twelve years ago)

i know it's small change, by the way

^ 諷刺 (ken c), Thursday, 26 June 2014 15:14 (twelve years ago)

Unfortunately he's going to be backed by his country and supporters to the point he believes there isn't a problem like the worst sort of enablers and he'll never get the sort of help he probably needs, c'est la vie

not lazy but clowning (Suedey 2), Thursday, 26 June 2014 15:15 (twelve years ago)

just reiterating the taboo I guess, biting is associated only with like rabid animals and children

most can relate to seeing red in heat of sporting moment and lashing out a little excessively while jostling for position, making a challenge or whatever -- no one can relate to Suarez's impulse

anonanon, Thursday, 26 June 2014 15:16 (twelve years ago)

As someone who has been on the receiving of both actions, I can say I'd rather be bitten than butted, but that is not reflected in football's often skewed logic and morality.

Steven Kelly has obviously lived a fuller life than your average online hack

Number None, Thursday, 26 June 2014 15:18 (twelve years ago)

as something of a suarez sympathizer and actual mental health provider, there is nothing at all problematic for punishing him for actions that may have resulted from, say, his poor stress tolerance. he wasn't psychotically disorganized or w/e, he acted out inappropriately and there are rules

gbx, Thursday, 26 June 2014 15:18 (twelve years ago)

it's one of the less noble kinds of assault xxpost

^ 諷刺 (ken c), Thursday, 26 June 2014 15:18 (twelve years ago)

The physicality part of the game argument isn't saying it's okay to do it, endorsing it, or saying it shouldn't be dealt with... merely that it's reasonably foreseeable that elbows will happen, whereas the same isn't true for biting.

Popture, Thursday, 26 June 2014 15:19 (twelve years ago)

what about ghana then?

caek, Thursday, 26 June 2014 15:20 (twelve years ago)

Being mentally ill doesn't automatically excuse you for the consequences of your actions, especially if you're pleading not guilty to any wrong doing and claiming everything is basically fine what's the problem

If he admitted or even recognised he had some sort of problem it would be a different story and would prob be seen as more sympathetic

not lazy but clowning (Suedey 2), Thursday, 26 June 2014 15:20 (twelve years ago)

or just what gbx said, which was better

not lazy but clowning (Suedey 2), Thursday, 26 June 2014 15:20 (twelve years ago)

on the other hand, if he was shit at football, nobody would have given a shit about the ban

^ 諷刺 (ken c), Thursday, 26 June 2014 15:21 (twelve years ago)

the BBC has the early games today right? Are they showing Ghana-Portugal on BBC3 as per usual cos I couldn't find it on the schedule planner?
