Can you all shut the fuck up with the whole there's no difference between elbowing and biting? Though it's not desired, you do expect a certain rough and tumble around the ball. This rough and tumble is expected to come in certain forms, like shoves and elbows. Biting is outside this expectation. It also, unlike an elbow, but like the spitting someone mentioned before, is able to transfer communicable disease. It is both worse as a risk and worse for being further outside expected behaviour. It is qualitatively different. Idk, it's like if a boxer punched someone in the balls, you'd all be arguing, 'but it's only a punch, why isn't every punch treated this way?'. Because good reasons. Now shhh.

FIFA in not getting a thing right non-shockah.
― xyzzzz__, Thursday, 26 June 2014 14:28 (twelve years ago)
Eh I've hardly been one-eyed when it comes to his past offences, but this is stupidly harsh
― Ismael Klata, Thursday, 26 June 2014 14:28 (twelve years ago)
idk, the only people I've seen saying he's being overpunished are liverpool fans so
― not lazy but clowning (Suedey 2), Thursday, 26 June 2014 14:28 (twelve years ago)
Because good reasons
Get to fuck with that
― Ismael Klata, Thursday, 26 June 2014 14:29 (twelve years ago)
is de facto identical to his previous bans for the same offence IK. do you think those were harsh?
― caek, Thursday, 26 June 2014 14:29 (twelve years ago)
IK i frankly can't believe you are arguing that with a straight face. caek otm this is just on the lenient side of the line.
― Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 26 June 2014 14:30 (twelve years ago)
i expected 6 months tbh, it clearly isn't harsh given his recidivism
nobody shd shut up about the tolerance extended to other forms of assault in the game, as long as we accept this is a separate and justified case
there is something iffy in an arbitrary application of post-game evidence - so codify it
― clockpuncher (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 26 June 2014 14:30 (twelve years ago)
de facto how? It's four months from all football.
― Ismael Klata, Thursday, 26 June 2014 14:30 (twelve years ago)
I don't think it's harsh. It's the *third* time he committed the same offence he's been punished for before. What it is, is extremely stupid and mental. He needs professional help or he'll just do it again next year. (please bite Gerrard next time)
― In the airplane over the .CSS (Le Bateau Ivre), Thursday, 26 June 2014 14:31 (twelve years ago)
it's summer. he's going to miss the same number of club games as the last time he did this.
do you seriously think he shouldn't also miss the rest of the world cup?
xp
― caek, Thursday, 26 June 2014 14:31 (twelve years ago)
I mean J.Terry
― In the airplane over the .CSS (Le Bateau Ivre), Thursday, 26 June 2014 14:32 (twelve years ago)
he should stop biting people
― caek, Thursday, 26 June 2014 14:32 (twelve years ago)
That was on club duty though, this isn't.
― Ismael Klata, Thursday, 26 June 2014 14:32 (twelve years ago)
What it is, is extremely stupid and mental^this is key

― caek, Thursday, 26 June 2014 14:33 (twelve years ago)
Obviously he should miss the next round, assuming it was a bite.
― Ismael Klata, Thursday, 26 June 2014 14:33 (twelve years ago)
Does it matter? It's football. He's a football player. He committed the crime while playing football. Why does it matter if it wasn't in the domestic league?
xxxp

― In the airplane over the .CSS (Le Bateau Ivre), Thursday, 26 June 2014 14:34 (twelve years ago)
Only mourn for what would've been a pretty great match with Colombia.
But yeah the x number of games should cover the international fixtures.
― xyzzzz__, Thursday, 26 June 2014 14:34 (twelve years ago)
i mean there are pedantic legalistic reasons why FIFA themselves may be overstepping by banning him from all football.
sure.
but if FIFA had just sent him home from the world cup i am certain the FA would have banned him for longer than 10 games for general "bringing into disrepute" type reasons.
tbh he's lucky FIFA banned him for as long as they did and there should now be now pressure for the FA to step in
― caek, Thursday, 26 June 2014 14:35 (twelve years ago)
heh a little LBI, but I dunno, I try to take a reasonable position and it turns out there's only sides, so I guess I'm with Diego Lugano and the Uruguayan FA

― caek, Thursday, 26 June 2014 14:36 (twelve years ago)
popture where did someone say it was no different to an elbow? I was genuinely interested as to what offences are subject to video evidence and which aren't. Ban is about what I expected although obv. I'd rather it was just a large Uruguay ban and not LFC. But hardly surprising.
― pandemic, Thursday, 26 June 2014 14:37 (twelve years ago)
The FA are probably relieved. Banning someone who'd just knocked them out of the WC maybe a little tricky idk
IK when a red card is missed on the pitch it's pretty much always at least a 2-3 game suspension. if you seriously think he should miss "the next round" for a red card offence (his repeatedly doing the same weird thing notwithstanding) then lol.
― caek, Thursday, 26 June 2014 14:38 (twelve years ago)
@IK I understand, but being contrarian for the sake of it, or standing with the Uru FA doesn't necesarily make it a 'reasonable position' :)

Ismael, you're not really worried about LFC are you? They'll be fine.
― pandemic, Thursday, 26 June 2014 14:41 (twelve years ago)
How long was the ban for biting Ivanovic?
― tsrobodo, Thursday, 26 June 2014 14:41 (twelve years ago)
The fine and nine matches missed for Uruguay aren't the surprise. The four-month blanket ban from all football activities, including training, pre-season, and league matches for Liverpool, is unexpected, and would keep him out of action until October 25th, which would mean that he also misses nine Premier League matches as well as Liverpool's first League Cup tie and three Champions League group stage games.
― In the airplane over the .CSS (Le Bateau Ivre), Thursday, 26 June 2014 14:42 (twelve years ago)
Ten games iirc
― Ismael Klata, Thursday, 26 June 2014 14:42 (twelve years ago)
Ya, ten. Biting Bakkal earned him a 7 game ban.
― In the airplane over the .CSS (Le Bateau Ivre), Thursday, 26 June 2014 14:43 (twelve years ago)
As opposed to twenty-two games plus everything else
― Ismael Klata, Thursday, 26 June 2014 14:43 (twelve years ago)
guess Fifa's ban hammer is heavier
― tsrobodo, Thursday, 26 June 2014 14:45 (twelve years ago)
but I mean it would be
You can't bite people at their big outing and not get shat on
― tsrobodo, Thursday, 26 June 2014 14:46 (twelve years ago)
So should he just get the same length of ban every time he does it? xps
― Wristy Hurlington (ShariVari), Thursday, 26 June 2014 14:46 (twelve years ago)
That's not how punishment of repeat offenders normally goes down.
― Wristy Hurlington (ShariVari), Thursday, 26 June 2014 14:47 (twelve years ago)
something like that, if there must be a ban
― Ismael Klata, Thursday, 26 June 2014 14:47 (twelve years ago)
If they're taking in to account his previous then it stands to reason it extends to his club as well. It's for his own good honestly, and he should sort himself out if he has the self awareness to do so/uruguay actually allows him too, otherwise he'll just keep biting people and unlike overly aggressive challenges or elbows which continue to be a problem like in any contact sport this isn't really an argument you should be having when discussing football in any way

Is LFC really not allowed to sell Suarez? Runs contrary to everything I know about indentured servitude
― 龜, Thursday, 26 June 2014 14:52 (twelve years ago)
I don't have a good answer for how to deal with punishing a repeat biter over offences committed across different teams, leagues, tournaments.
but like a year ban for Suarez himself wouldn't be at all ridiculous at this stage, if the impact could be focused and limited to him.
chance that LFC sue him cf mutu/Chelsea?
― leave the web boys alone (darraghmac), Thursday, 26 June 2014 14:53 (twelve years ago)

― not lazy but clowning (Suedey 2), Thursday, 26 June 2014 14:54 (twelve years ago)
Why would we sue him? He misses a few games. Big deal.
