my Dad once told me the story of a local FA guy who decided the result of an abandoned match by coin toss over the phone

Kevin from Blechgium (Noodle Vague), Monday, 23 June 2014 10:26 (twelve years ago)

hahaha that is fantastic!

Jibe, Monday, 23 June 2014 10:27 (twelve years ago)

I want to see Cronaldo's face when he gets kicked out of the world cup by a coin toss SO BAD.

btw the net sound for Jones's goal last night

*flamboyantly kisses fingertips*

Ismael Klata, Monday, 23 June 2014 10:44 (twelve years ago)

yeah the brittle, running-scared vibe at the end of the game and the tremendous disappointment of that last goal shouldn't erase the fucking awesomeness of JJ's moment

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Monday, 23 June 2014 10:50 (twelve years ago)

i guess if i could say that there's one thing EVERYONE in this thread needs to do tonight, it's listen to the univision call of jermaine jones' goal (or, as the spanish language announcer puts it, a "goalazo")

If ya'll weren't watching the Univision feed to begin with then I just don't know

for many this would probably push the world cup from great to best ever

Jibe, Monday, 23 June 2014 10:57 (twelve years ago)

cherry-on-top: Nani gets to toss the coin

Ismael Klata, Monday, 23 June 2014 10:59 (twelve years ago)

He'd probably miss the ground.

Rabona not glue (aldo), Monday, 23 June 2014 11:05 (twelve years ago)

I think you are all way way overestimating how much this WC means to Ronaldo. He knows he's not fit and isn't gonna be fit in the weeks ahead, he knows he plays in a terrible team. He looked like he was taking being knocked out last night in a resigned fashion.

pandemic, Monday, 23 June 2014 11:12 (twelve years ago)

Don't you try and take this from me.

Monday (GMT times):
5:00pm
Australia v Spain - poss dud, neither teams can qualify
Holland v Chile - poss excitement, teams might try to win to avoid Brazil

9:00pm
Cameroon v Brazil - Cameroon out, likely to be whitewash for Brazil?
Croatia v Mexico - likely gold, both teams still in for qualification

Drop soap, not bombs (Ste), Monday, 23 June 2014 12:03 (twelve years ago)

Am I paranoid or has the draw been fixed to make a Brazil v. Argentina the mostly likely final?

Tommy McTommy (Tom D.), Monday, 23 June 2014 12:12 (twelve years ago)

Tuesday(GMT times):
5:00pm
Costa Rica v England - probably snore fest, Rica through and England, well.
Italy v Uruguay - Both teams fighting for the second place. Yummy.

9:00pm
Greece v Ivory Coast - Greece need to score at least 4 goals and win but also hope that Japan don't win by 2 goals at least, to get second place.
Japan v Columbia - Columbia through, but Japan can get second if they win by at least 2 goals and hope Greece win but don't nail Ivory Coast by 4 goals or more.

Drop soap, not bombs (Ste), Monday, 23 June 2014 12:13 (twelve years ago)

hope that's right anyway

Drop soap, not bombs (Ste), Monday, 23 June 2014 12:14 (twelve years ago)

LOLz if Greece actually manage to qualify

Tommy McTommy (Tom D.), Monday, 23 June 2014 12:15 (twelve years ago)

also of note, if Brazil lose (hmm) and Croatia v Mexico is a draw. Brazil are out, or if Croatia win and Brazil lose by at least 2 goals.

Drop soap, not bombs (Ste), Monday, 23 June 2014 12:20 (twelve years ago)

oh no sorry, it would depend on how many goals Croatia get against Mexico wouldn't it.

Drop soap, not bombs (Ste), Monday, 23 June 2014 12:22 (twelve years ago)

Tom D. - yes you are paranoid.

Brazil won't lose against Cameron.

Croatia - Mexico and Italy - Uruguay should be terrific games.

Chile - Netherlands - so much classic potential. Both through though and they have nothing to fear against Brazil. Can see them both easing if its 1-1 after 70 mins.

xyzzzz__, Monday, 23 June 2014 12:50 (twelve years ago)

i like how his first and last names become one name

Sufjan Grafton, Monday, 23 June 2014 14:47 (twelve years ago)

does that mean they will score/concede 10 goals because they are playing old forwards on defense, or does it mean that they are not being serious?

Sufjan Grafton, Monday, 23 June 2014 14:52 (twelve years ago)

the last two group games should be played simultaneously on two fields that intersect at the center, forming a cross. this way you could play your game, while also trying to change the outcome of the other game.

Sufjan Grafton, Monday, 23 June 2014 14:56 (twelve years ago)

<3 Kuyt, but with this Holland may be setting themselves up for a second-round game against Brazil. Are you fine with that LBI?

ik idk if you've been watching but Brazil are total shit

leave the web boys alone (darraghmac), Monday, 23 June 2014 15:30 (twelve years ago)

Still Brazil in Brazil though. And in any case it's a genuine question when the alternative is likely Mexico, I'm not trying to point-and-laugh at Holland or anything.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 23 June 2014 15:33 (twelve years ago)

group stage performance not necessarily a good indicator (but it's the only one we've got)

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Monday, 23 June 2014 15:37 (twelve years ago)

5300+ posts -> What do you all say to opening another thread when the group stages are over? (Friday?)

StanM, Monday, 23 June 2014 15:42 (twelve years ago)

No:
• nobody's ever going to try to open the whole thing;
• I like this thread.

Yes:
• can get rid of FIFA from the thread title. It's 'the World Cup' ffs, not 'the FIFA World Cup'.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 23 June 2014 15:45 (twelve years ago)

Apparently we're not allowed to do that

Turtleneck Work Solutions (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Monday, 23 June 2014 15:47 (twelve years ago)

No, I'm not fine with that IK. Van Gaal's idea is that the Chile backs run up so far, that a workhorse is needed to track them. Martins Indi is injured. I would've moved Blind to left back and Kongolo as a centre defender.

Now we've got a right-footed winger as left back. And it's Kuyt. It sounds so utterly ridiculous it just might work.

In the airplane over the .CSS (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 23 June 2014 15:47 (twelve years ago)

You've riled me about this before NBS

Ismael Klata, Monday, 23 June 2014 15:48 (twelve years ago)

Having said that, and I'm at the very least ambiguous about Van Gaal, he has pulled stunts like this before, where seemingly batshit insane choices actually paid off. So yeah.

Xp

I've been wondering when someone was going to bring that up. FINALLY!

Number None, Monday, 23 June 2014 15:52 (twelve years ago)

At least that sounds like an intention to win. My first thought was that he was just giving the first XI a rest.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 23 June 2014 15:53 (twelve years ago)

Oh no, defo intention to win (or draw).

In the airplane over the .CSS (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 23 June 2014 15:53 (twelve years ago)

Yeah xp I've been out for a month but I'm back like Suarez

Ismael Klata, Monday, 23 June 2014 15:53 (twelve years ago)

Say what you like about Brazil not being v good. But it's Brazil, in Brazil. Would rather avoid that tbh

In the airplane over the .CSS (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 23 June 2014 15:54 (twelve years ago)
