avicii usque ad arse (imago), Monday, 23 June 2014 01:18 (twelve years ago)

upshot has US's chances of advancing at 63%, fivethirtyeight has it at 76%

k3vin k., Monday, 23 June 2014 01:18 (twelve years ago)

yeah and they had Spain at 61% to win the tournament

that stuff is such bullshit

Number None, Monday, 23 June 2014 01:19 (twelve years ago)

when will you learn your precious statistics can't be applied to this delightfully crude game

Number None, Monday, 23 June 2014 01:20 (twelve years ago)

you can't put your arms around a lamprey (brownie), Monday, 23 June 2014 01:28 (twelve years ago)

Loads of USA newbs straight blaming Bradley for giving it away and that wasn't good but there was coverage back and only one runner.

dan m, Monday, 23 June 2014 01:29 (twelve years ago)

i had to skip most of this thread tonight due to cares but love him though i do t-how kinda messed up that first port goal

gbx, Monday, 23 June 2014 01:30 (twelve years ago)

he sure likes goals

Sufjan Grafton, Monday, 23 June 2014 01:51 (twelve years ago)

I bet his kids don't even think twice about what to get him for Father's Day. They just get him goals.

Sufjan Grafton, Monday, 23 June 2014 01:56 (twelve years ago)

belgium has been pretty wack this tournament i'm already basking in the glow of america's shocking upset

le goon (J0rdan S.), Monday, 23 June 2014 02:01 (twelve years ago)

considering degree of difficulty and game jermaine jones goal was the sickest goal in US history imo

weird i didn't realize they still let british people post in the world cup thread, i guess that's nice

le goon (J0rdan S.), Monday, 23 June 2014 02:22 (twelve years ago)

i guess if i could say that there's one thing EVERYONE in this thread needs to do tonight, it's listen to the univision call of jermaine jones' goal (or, as the spanish language announcer puts it, a "goalazo")

I think what we need is to know what Lawro had to say, or maybe Shearer. What shirt were they wearing when they said it, too?

dan m, Monday, 23 June 2014 02:40 (twelve years ago)

I can't believe how devastated I was at the end of this game

Prince Kajuku (Bill Magill), Monday, 23 June 2014 03:03 (twelve years ago)

me too. i think it was that goal.

Sufjan Grafton, Monday, 23 June 2014 03:09 (twelve years ago)

that one at the very end.

Sufjan Grafton, Monday, 23 June 2014 03:09 (twelve years ago)

Good analysis. Well done.

Prince Kajuku (Bill Magill), Monday, 23 June 2014 03:30 (twelve years ago)

This is truly a red letter day if Bill Magill is getting on board

dan m, Monday, 23 June 2014 03:34 (twelve years ago)

I'm far from an expert but I grew up going to Chicago Sting games featuring Karl-Heinz Granitza and some brilliantly afro'd goalie named Parks, I think. I'll watch anything with a ball (or puck) where they keep score. I've watched most if every game espn has televised, this is awesome stuff.

Prince Kajuku (Bill Magill), Monday, 23 June 2014 03:56 (twelve years ago)

Looked it up the guys name was Phil Parkes.

Prince Kajuku (Bill Magill), Monday, 23 June 2014 04:07 (twelve years ago)

Sad that I took the sensible option of going to bed rather than watching USA v Portugal.

Is this the Best World Cup Ever? It's probably the one I've enjoyed most since 1994. Common factors = late-night games and England not being on the same continent as the other teams.

i reject your shiny expensive consumerist stereo system (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 23 June 2014 08:07 (twelve years ago)

its as good as any I can remember overall, though its hard to compare it to the tournaments Ireland were at obv

leave the web boys alone (darraghmac), Monday, 23 June 2014 10:10 (twelve years ago)

dream scenario for maximum lolz (correct me if this is not how it would happen though):
portugal-ghana 2-0, germany-usa 3-0
portugal and usa both on 4 points with the same goal differential, same number of goals scored, direct confrontation is a tie... which would lead to a coin toss to see who goes through. as i said, great fun for everyone not supporting either of those teams, one of those countries feeling wronged forever.

Jibe, Monday, 23 June 2014 10:23 (twelve years ago)

my Dad once told me the story of a local FA guy who decided the result of an abandoned match by coin toss over the phone

Kevin from Blechgium (Noodle Vague), Monday, 23 June 2014 10:26 (twelve years ago)

hahaha that is fantastic!

Jibe, Monday, 23 June 2014 10:27 (twelve years ago)

I want to see Cronaldo's face when he gets kicked out of the world cup by a coin toss SO BAD.

btw the net sound for Jones's goal last night

*flamboyantly kisses fingertips*

Ismael Klata, Monday, 23 June 2014 10:44 (twelve years ago)

yeah the brittle, running-scared vibe at the end of the game and the tremendous disappointment of that last goal shouldn't erase the fucking awesomeness of JJ's moment

for many this would probably push the world cup from great to best ever

Jibe, Monday, 23 June 2014 10:57 (twelve years ago)

cherry-on-top: Nani gets to toss the coin

Ismael Klata, Monday, 23 June 2014 10:59 (twelve years ago)

He'd probably miss the ground.

Rabona not glue (aldo), Monday, 23 June 2014 11:05 (twelve years ago)

I think you are all way way overestimating how much this WC means to Ronaldo. He knows he's not fit and isn't gonna be fit in the weeks ahead, he knows he plays in a terrible team. He looked like he was taking being knocked out last night in a resigned fashion.
