I'd hazard that there's many left sided players who defend as badly as Rooney, but its just that very many of them are very good in attack and he's not

Is baines getting off the hook for his marking?

^ 諷刺 (ken c), Sunday, 15 June 2014 09:53 (twelve years ago)

nah just get tired of reiterating how shit all these alleged international class footballers are and the coverage on the radio and TV makes me think i'm just grudgeful and wilfully blind

Naamloze vennootschap (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 15 June 2014 09:57 (twelve years ago)

BTW, what's the point of all the well designed kits when they're going to wear hideously fluo shoes in completely unrelated colours anyway?

StanM, Sunday, 15 June 2014 10:00 (twelve years ago)

booming q needs brought before lagúna's thread immediately

dn/ac (darraghmac), Sunday, 15 June 2014 10:46 (twelve years ago)

Those puma kicks are sick

, Sunday, 15 June 2014 11:25 (twelve years ago)

Loved all those stark contrasts in JP-CIV (deeply saturated green pitch, pink stripes on Jpns kits, Civs orange kits/hyper-red shoes combo)...

Japan sure got a lot of yellow cards #racism

Think Pirlo is more of a hindrance than a help to Italy at this stage in his career, I lost count of the number of times Chiellini and Darmian were free in acres of space on the wings and a longer cross-ball would have set them free but the desire to play short ball close passing sucked out the momentum.

Felt like England were an accident waiting to happen, twp obviously a massive problem but the back four is just hideous - every time the ball was in the box they looked like conceding. Amazed Italy didn't play more balls to Super Mario's head and wasn't at all surprised when they scored that way. Team obviously told to shoot on sight; was there a shot from in the box other than the goal?

Daniwa, guys! Daniwa! (aldo), Sunday, 15 June 2014 12:14 (twelve years ago)

Jeez-o... Phil Neville... I'm surprised I managed to stay awake for the 2nd half tbh

Tommy McTommy (Tom D.), Sunday, 15 June 2014 12:35 (twelve years ago)

Could not keep my eyes open for the game last night, saw about ten minutes of the first half.

Drop soap, not bombs (Ste), Sunday, 15 June 2014 12:38 (twelve years ago)

Then P. Neville did for you and you were out like a light, yeah, I understand

Football hipsters-

What do you think? Maybe ok to skip Ecuador - Switzerland?

Apart from cheering on Antonio, I feel that my time might be better spent doing some of the work I've been putting off and enjoying this beautiful New England day.

maybe/whatever/so what/boring (admrl), Sunday, 15 June 2014 13:17 (twelve years ago)

i'm struggling to get excited for that one but i remind myself sometimes it's the unexpected matches when mad shit happens

Naamloze vennootschap (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 15 June 2014 13:23 (twelve years ago)

Really looking forward to Switzerland. Will skip France Honduras, expect France to walk that.

mizzell, Sunday, 15 June 2014 13:25 (twelve years ago)

this is a really young, exciting Swiss team. Could be good

Number None, Sunday, 15 June 2014 13:29 (twelve years ago)

Did you expect Spain to lose 1-5 to the Dutch? xpost

Shhhhhh! You and the little devil on my shoulder.

maybe/whatever/so what/boring (admrl), Sunday, 15 June 2014 13:30 (twelve years ago)

The little devil is also reminding me that the groups stages are usually (maybe always) the best part...

maybe/whatever/so what/boring (admrl), Sunday, 15 June 2014 13:31 (twelve years ago)

ecuador-swiss is hipster lode imo

dn/ac (darraghmac), Sunday, 15 June 2014 13:32 (twelve years ago)

Ok how the F am I gonna get anything done this summer

maybe/whatever/so what/boring (admrl), Sunday, 15 June 2014 13:33 (twelve years ago)

Best left back in the world is playing for Switzerland. Worth a look. Plus Shaqiri and Drmic.

pandemic, Sunday, 15 June 2014 13:36 (twelve years ago)

yes?

dn/ac (darraghmac), Sunday, 15 June 2014 13:41 (twelve years ago)

Actually I'll revise that to best left back in the world who isn't David Alaba. Also I think Xhaka plays at the #10 for Switzerland but for his club he seems a kind of functional CM. Plus the possibility of an all Napoli MF and an all Arsenal rejects central defence.

pandemic, Sunday, 15 June 2014 13:49 (twelve years ago)

dmac drmic pndmic pvmic

dn/ac (darraghmac), Sunday, 15 June 2014 13:50 (twelve years ago)

Plus always a chance Senderos might do this again:

Best right back you mean?

ewar woowar (or something), Sunday, 15 June 2014 15:22 (twelve years ago)

do you think lichsteiener is the best RB in the world??

pandemic, Sunday, 15 June 2014 15:32 (twelve years ago)

thought ecuador were okay vs england but looking at their qualification record they were p hopeless when not playing at altitude

pandemic, Sunday, 15 June 2014 15:34 (twelve years ago)

Got a good draw vs the Netherlands too. The Swiss have not impressed me hugely up front in their recent friendlies. You'd fancy them but it should be very tight.

Wristy Hurlington (ShariVari), Sunday, 15 June 2014 15:43 (twelve years ago)

rodriguez vs valencia will be cool, unless tony is in utd mode of hitting the first man with every cross.

I'd say he's up there, I'm not sure we're spoiled in that postion atm.

ewar woowar (or something), Sunday, 15 June 2014 15:55 (twelve years ago)

does lahm still count?

pandemic, Sunday, 15 June 2014 15:56 (twelve years ago)

Nah

ewar woowar (or something), Sunday, 15 June 2014 15:59 (twelve years ago)

In related matters Aurier looked good for Ivory Coast last night.

ewar woowar (or something), Sunday, 15 June 2014 16:08 (twelve years ago)

Thanks in part to Kagawa not bothering to defend.

Plasmon, Sunday, 15 June 2014 16:10 (twelve years ago)

Ian Wright slaughtered him at half-time so he must be good.

xp

pandemic, Sunday, 15 June 2014 16:11 (twelve years ago)

Terrible game so far.

can't shtup the music (brownie), Sunday, 15 June 2014 16:11 (twelve years ago)

aurier is quite good and toulouse were looking to sell him this summer. last night's game prob increased his sale price, sadran must be happy

Jibe, Sunday, 15 June 2014 16:12 (twelve years ago)

This Charlton-Portsmouth game isn't up to much so far.

pandemic, Sunday, 15 June 2014 16:12 (twelve years ago)

The thing with Aurier was that being fed a diet of Glen Johnson cut-in-and-thwack-it-off-first-defender/over-the-bar it was nice to see a right back with some end product.

ewar woowar (or something), Sunday, 15 June 2014 16:18 (twelve years ago)

*mostly for Liverpool, doesn't even get that far for England.

ewar woowar (or something), Sunday, 15 June 2014 16:21 (twelve years ago)

tragically bad marking

pandemic, Sunday, 15 June 2014 16:22 (twelve years ago)

Entirely deserved

Wristy Hurlington (ShariVari), Sunday, 15 June 2014 16:22 (twelve years ago)

Piss poor marking there.

Daniwa, guys! Daniwa! (aldo), Sunday, 15 June 2014 16:22 (twelve years ago)

Dawning on me that every team in the world can't defend set-pieces.
