haha yeah, i looked it up and apparently spain was the home team so they chose to wear red, so holland couldn't be in orange as they're too similar. then fifa told spain that their red kit was dark, as was holland's so they needed to change to a light color (because of all three b&w tv viewers as stanm said), hence the white. lol fifa

Why couldn't Holland have worn orange in that case?

Prostitute Farm Online (Bananaman Begins), Saturday, 14 June 2014 11:03 (twelve years ago)

Yes, that FIFA rule is still in effect for the black and white TV viewers. All three of them.

^ privilege checking req'd imo

Prostitute Farm Online (Bananaman Begins), Saturday, 14 June 2014 11:05 (twelve years ago)

because orange and white are both light colours

Jibe, Saturday, 14 June 2014 11:05 (twelve years ago)

I expect that's the rationale, but damn,

all from 2010.

Irony is, I actually really like the navy with orange trim kits, dunno why the fuck I'm complaining.

Prostitute Farm Online (Bananaman Begins), Saturday, 14 June 2014 11:12 (twelve years ago)

I think the final step is more likely that the 'away' team in home kit and vice versa would be somehow unfair, rather than white & orange being wrong

Iain Mew (if), Saturday, 14 June 2014 11:17 (twelve years ago)

looking forward to the FIFA ruling on red and green

feels weird seeing last night's match described as "revenge" for a game where the Dutch spent 90 minutes kicking the shit out of Spain

Naamloze vennootschap (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 14 June 2014 11:29 (twelve years ago)

being warned by all and sundry not to go out in Naples tonight, but like, how am I meant to resist? might try and kid people that I'm actually Danish or sthing

Windsor Davies, Saturday, 14 June 2014 11:30 (twelve years ago)

think the major danger will be people laughing at you tbh

Naamloze vennootschap (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 14 June 2014 11:31 (twelve years ago)

Pretend to be Irish or Aussie and you should be fine.

I am going to attempt to stay up for Elfenbeinküste vs Japan but given that I nodded off before Beausejour scored yesterday, i'm not sure I fancy my chances.

Wristy Hurlington (ShariVari), Saturday, 14 June 2014 11:36 (twelve years ago)

http://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2014/06/why-we-call-soccer-soccer/372771/

In May, Stefan Szymanski, a sports economist at the University of Michigan, published a paper debunking the notion that "soccer" is a semantically bizarre American invention. In fact, it's a British import. And the Brits used it often—until, that is, it became too much of an Americanism for British English to bear.
