"I'm OLD SCHOOL, Janice!"

Neanderthal, Sunday, 8 June 2014 04:31 (twelve years ago)

Richie vs tony was great!

sufi john paxson (Sufjan Grafton), Sunday, 8 June 2014 04:57 (twelve years ago)

I look fwd to the deepening of Christopher's character then, as you can't have tragedy centered on pure vermin.

I can give Chase a pass for making Tony a WC Fields fan, but "I screened The Bank Dick last night"? Tony Sotosyn!

The ellipses are crafty in some of the episodes, like you don't know what made Livia's Jamaican maid stomp out -- well you do, but you don't hear it. (Also savvy bcz even tho Ma is clearly a gorgon, the direct evidence is elided in this case.) Also you don't see the Hasidic guy whose father-in-law wants him zotzed beg for his testicles in the basement of the meat store.

Season 5 has been a drag. Just had a good dream episode though.

"Irregular Around The Margins" (Season 5) is my favorite episode of any. One storyline, no subplots, who knows if Chrissy will get out alive.

did click through tho on the money (Eazy), Monday, 9 June 2014 17:43 (twelve years ago)

yeah, season 5 became good in the end. That was a good ep. Everyone seemed to be off doing their own thing for the beginning and middle though.

sufi john paxson (Sufjan Grafton), Monday, 9 June 2014 17:48 (twelve years ago)

all of the abuse was just tough to sit through. The cover art kinda says it all.

I look fwd to the deepening of Christopher's character then, as you can't have tragedy centered on pure vermin.

they're all vermin to varying degrees but aspects of his character come to the fore that make him more sympathetic, esp when set in contrast with some of the others

Οὖτις, Monday, 9 June 2014 17:53 (twelve years ago)

yeah, he's not just a ziggy

sufi john paxson (Sufjan Grafton), Monday, 9 June 2014 17:55 (twelve years ago)

he is ziggy for maybe all of season 1 though. but i guess he can back it up better than ziggy.

sufi john paxson (Sufjan Grafton), Monday, 9 June 2014 17:56 (twelve years ago)

Oh, and season 5 has that great last scene of Tony walking out of Janice's house and down the street to "I'm Not Like Everybody Else."

did click through tho on the money (Eazy), Monday, 9 June 2014 17:59 (twelve years ago)

not sure if Camille Paglia's critical thoughts have been linked on these threads. in due time.

images of war violence and historical smoking (Dr Morbius), Monday, 9 June 2014 18:00 (twelve years ago)

xpost Oh, and season five has f-in "In Camelot" which Morbs should skip to if he ends up considering quitting the show for good.

did click through tho on the money (Eazy), Monday, 9 June 2014 18:01 (twelve years ago)

camille paglia is never necessary

Οὖτις, Monday, 9 June 2014 18:01 (twelve years ago)

very little is necessary

i chuckled when i saw the final count on this series was 27 actors in common w/ Goodfellas.

images of war violence and historical smoking (Dr Morbius), Monday, 9 June 2014 18:03 (twelve years ago)

it's weird that Chase's movie was so hated around here when y'all are crazy for the needledrops on the show

images of war violence and historical smoking (Dr Morbius), Monday, 9 June 2014 18:04 (twelve years ago)

needledrops are a little less obvious/60s cliche here, given that the show is not set in the 60s. altho I liked that movie fine.

Οὖτις, Monday, 9 June 2014 18:05 (twelve years ago)

this show does have some of my all-time music placement moments though - Dirty Work, Gotta Serve Somebody, Moonlight Mile

Οὖτις, Monday, 9 June 2014 18:06 (twelve years ago)

i miss ralph and janice

sufi john paxson (Sufjan Grafton), Monday, 9 June 2014 18:08 (twelve years ago)

that reminds me, how could I forget Janice's "Mother and Child Reunion" moment

god this show

Οὖτις, Monday, 9 June 2014 18:26 (twelve years ago)

my two fave musical moments are "Oh Girl" and "Glad Tidings"

Number None, Monday, 9 June 2014 18:51 (twelve years ago)

Fred Neil's "Dolphins" w/Christopher a fave of mine.

nickn, Monday, 9 June 2014 19:01 (twelve years ago)

also-christopher was a huge fuckup and junkie and liability and obviously should have been killed in season one. he wasn't because tony has a sentimental streak and he saw chris as his surrogate son. this narrative tension drove a large part of the show! like why did fredo last so long, etc. family and Family get all intertwined..it's a pretty common trope in crime fiction.

slam dunk, Tuesday, 10 June 2014 00:24 (twelve years ago)

"World Destruction" much too hip for the milieu

I'm kinda glad Chase didn't have the power to pop Plastic Bertrand into The Rockford Files.

son of a lewd monk (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 10 June 2014 03:21 (twelve years ago)

'world destruction' is too hip, so is 'evidently chickentown'. using them is powerful to me because it feels like the narrative zooms out for a bit, it's like a little aside from the palm of god/the author. i totally get that it could take people out of the narrative though. it's a risk.

slam dunk, Tuesday, 10 June 2014 03:36 (twelve years ago)

That's an interesting take, connecting it with that Burroughs-y voiceover.

did click through tho on the money (Eazy), Tuesday, 10 June 2014 03:38 (twelve years ago)

music choices in the soprano are tops, and the non-diegetic music is allowed to be whatever chase wants it to be.

socki (s1ocki), Tuesday, 10 June 2014 08:55 (twelve years ago)

unless you are ridiculously literal-minded about wanting film music to just set the scene and nothing else, in which case, go watch forrest gump.

socki (s1ocki), Tuesday, 10 June 2014 08:56 (twelve years ago)

never have and I'd like you to watch this fucking chainsaw

son of a lewd monk (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 10 June 2014 09:19 (twelve years ago)

this fucking chainsaw is much too hip for the milieu

lag∞n, Tuesday, 10 June 2014 11:31 (twelve years ago)

The Sopranos is similar to Jesus Christ as the most objectionable thing about em are the fans

son of a lewd monk (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 10 June 2014 13:30 (twelve years ago)

u jelly?

lag∞n, Tuesday, 10 June 2014 13:31 (twelve years ago)

Welcome Back, Ginny Sack! (theme song could be a variation of "Jimmy Mack")

David Chase's dry-run Sopranos episode on "The Rockford Files" in 1979:

whoa

socki (s1ocki), Wednesday, 30 July 2014 14:44 (eleven years ago)

sounds more like a curiosity than must-see TV (and not playing to TRF's strengths)

son of a lewd monk (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 30 July 2014 14:55 (eleven years ago)

yeah i was intrigued at first but that doesn't make it sound too appealing

socki (s1ocki), Wednesday, 30 July 2014 14:56 (eleven years ago)

Uncle Beppy is a better name than Uncle Junior tho. (Also, I distinctly remember my grandma, who lived in Newark nearly her whole life, talking about a restaurant named Beppy's.)

son of a lewd monk (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 30 July 2014 14:59 (eleven years ago)

uncle junior is a GREAT name!!

socki (s1ocki), Wednesday, 30 July 2014 15:20 (eleven years ago)

what can i say, Beppy's Restaurant is more memorable than Junior's Restaurant (at least these days)
