my wife's out of town at a bachelorette party, my toddler son is asleep in the other room. i'm eating some sauteed broccoli rabe and am deciding whether to watch meek's cutoff or some wire reruns.

Luby's take out dinners with best friends and daughter. Discussed Stories We Tell (2012). Good conversation over mediocre comfort food hit the spot. Now, hot tea and silence.

"am rewatching deadwood s1"

I recently rewatched S3 and enjoyed it a lot more than the first viewing during which I missed the odd ep and was a bit meh. The maverick villain George Hearst character is so despicably brilliant, he runs roughshod over Al + Cy and when he sends his henchman for a fight to the death with Dan in probably the most brutal fight scene ever. Oh and Cox constantly hamming is just beautiful. It is a dreadful business that this got bumped when it was showing no lag and still full of potential.

xelab, Sunday, 8 June 2014 21:11 (nine years ago) link

Hearst is a fascinating villain to me, so full of contradictions & violence

Like he walked right off the pages of Blood Meridian

Last time we rewatched deadwood, kind of disappointed in season 3. Mainly because I knew how unresolved it would end, so I just was sad the whole time.

Jeff, Sunday, 8 June 2014 21:41 (nine years ago) link

But I think my favorite parts of deadwood is how psychotic Cy is.

Jeff, Sunday, 8 June 2014 21:42 (nine years ago) link

love Cy

Calamity's my favorite

Milch's next show The Money, about a dynastic NY media family with Brendon Gleeson should be a good one, knowing his luck it will probably be brilliant and get bumped.

Loaded up on snacks from trader joes in preparation for NFL action. Now I'm catching up on season 4 of Sons of Anarchy

yeah the thunderstorm & flood warning ruined my plans for tonight. I'm at home alone.

Last sat. nite was great though - impromptu jam session in our backyard. I'm moving soon, and will miss living someplace where you do such things and get away with it.

food: bbq chicken sandwich and seasoned fries (only ate some of this bc too much food but it was great)
drink: glass of chardonnay, which was whatever
entertainment: the last night of the step & repeat concert series at the moca geffen contemporary. stephen malkmus and the jicks were lots of fun, but the other acts on the bill (spoken word, video artists, neil hamburger) i could have done without.

tim hecker was supposed to do a 10-hour sound installation, but he backed out because the technical specs weren't right -- i was really bummed about that because it was one of the big selling points of the night for me.

this reminds me
there is a local joint that has no store, but sells cookies via direct delivery (catering) and has ice cream sandwiches (ice cream between two cookies) in local grocery stores

I looked at their website after some cookies were delivered to a coworker and it's 1.5 blocks from my house!

I know they don't sell directly out their place, but I keep having this thought in the back of my head,
GO RAID THE COOKIE JOINT

There's some great (and sometimes tremendous) footage/insights in some of the installments of Mr. Burns' Jazz. But (spoiler alert) significant portions of Episode 10 are revisionist history and/or outright lies.

(he said while spending a Saturday night listening to a boxed set by Anthony Braxton, who goes unmentioned in the series)

Ken Burns vs. Wynton Marsalis -- which is the most hated among free jazz/EFI ppl?

sarahell, Sunday, 16 November 2014 04:10 (nine years ago) link

Went way uptown intending to hear Cornel West speak about religion and revolution; accidentally ended up at a Bob Avakian rally (because Bob spoke first and didn't stop for ALMOST TWO HOURS). Nearly starved to death despite having eaten lunch just before leaving. 8 hours later, finally got back home.

jenny holzer, ilxor (mh), Sunday, 16 November 2014 04:33 (nine years ago) link

Have already found some odd moments in KB Jazz, ie minstrelsy was handled v strangely

Marsalis seemed like a weird choice since most of what he says seems to be made up on the fly, like it sounds pretty but huh?

Dont have much on early jazz bios though, so the profiles are kinda interesting to me

Get the feeling this will handle late period jazz in the same pathetic way he handled modern baseball "yadda yadda it's not as pure now anyway APPLE PIE U GUYS"

Ken Burns vs. Wynton Marsalis -- which is the most hated among free jazz/EFI ppl?

Ha, well, Burns basically deferred to Marsalis and Stanley Crouch (who, pre-neo-con, was actually a pretty good drummer in the new music, cf. the Wildflowers series on Casablanca). Crouch has many more insights than Marsalis in the series -- it seems like Wynton is trying/failing to pontificate in a similar manner -- but they were both consultants, and both apparently chose to lionize Dexter Gordon for only finding a following in Europe while simultaneously ridiculing the Art Ensemble Of Chicago for only finding a following in Europe.

Also, according to Wynton, Miles went electric after recording and releasing two albums with electric piano (one of which had electric bass). Now we know.

are we still talking about boring saturday nights? i am listening to itunes on shuffle, contemplating having some barbecue for dinner at a local place, and thinking about finishing up an end-of-year thing i'm contributing to one of the places where i write.

I've done two loads of laundry and drank two bottles of stout. My wife is making cookies.

dan m, Sunday, 7 December 2014 00:50 (nine years ago) link

Also on a laundry tip. Kids are upstairs playing Minecraft. Wife took her dad out for dinner for his birthday. Glass of box wine. Listening to the never-fail Saturday night "Block Party" on WWOZ. Tonight they're playing all 45s from the '60s and '70s that I've never heard of. Disco-funk version of "Moon River." Barbara Lynn. Lee Moses. Things could be worse.
