Sufjenga Cat Giffin (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 5 June 2014 19:38 (twelve years ago)

haha this will be enough to push me into getting a shitty flip phone and a sandisk mp3 player. i'm too poor for this bullshit.

mattresslessness, Thursday, 5 June 2014 19:39 (twelve years ago)

mh I didn't know that! Thanks.

ugh (lukas), Thursday, 5 June 2014 19:39 (twelve years ago)

Xpost I already made that switch to the forty buck sandisk player just last month when my iPod 160 corrupted itself for the billionth time. This thing is great, u can replace the firmware with rockbox in like 3 minutes and have a bunch of micro sd sub-libraries in your wallet. Plays any type of file you throw at it too.

Khamma chameleon (Jon Lewis), Thursday, 5 June 2014 21:23 (twelve years ago)

will it play my old lode runner saved game files?

Sufjenga Cat Giffin (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 5 June 2014 21:34 (twelve years ago)

Man given some of the new view APIs in iOS 8 there is 100% likelihood of a big iPhone next up

stet, Thursday, 5 June 2014 22:19 (twelve years ago)

If they don't put out a 5s sized version of the 6 with feature parity with whatever phabletesque monstrosity the market is forcing them to put out I will be cheesed off.

What Is It Like To Be A HOOS? (silby), Thursday, 5 June 2014 22:24 (twelve years ago)

otm, iphone 5 is perfect size. read something that said bigass phones are favored by people who don't want to buy both a tablet & a phone & I thought c'mon we're talking about APPLE customers here

Euler, Thursday, 5 June 2014 22:27 (twelve years ago)

big ass phones are especially popular with people for whom its their only device

lag∞n, Thursday, 5 June 2014 22:28 (twelve years ago)

lag∞n, Thursday, 5 June 2014 22:29 (twelve years ago)

Sufjenga Cat Giffin (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 5 June 2014 22:31 (twelve years ago)

yeah all the older ppl i know like have to put on their glasses and hold an iphone v close to their face to like look at pics of babies on facebook etc, reading text is not even a question. makes sense for these guys to have big massive phones i guess. like oldstyle large-print bibles for grandma.

lag∞n, Thursday, 5 June 2014 22:33 (twelve years ago)

re headphone lightning cable: could this be about healthkit? ie headphones being a thing you've often got draped around your neck taking your pulse and blood pressure and whatev. I guess they couldn't pass that info to the phone via the headphone jack, so if they're going to have to use a separate connection it makes sense to send everything through that rather than doubling up

sktsh, Thursday, 5 June 2014 23:48 (twelve years ago)

wireless earbuds

when when when will this magical breakthrough occur?

calstars, Friday, 6 June 2014 00:00 (twelve years ago)

BTW in Hong Kong they are selling heartbeat watches for $30 that you can buy from a vending machine

Whenever the iWatch finally comes out of whatever Manhattan Project lab it's in. A watch with a headphone jack looks ridiculous so of course there will have to be some sort of wireless earpod setup. Of course you want to be able to use iWatch with your stereo, so for $35 you can buy a Lightning-to-RCA/mini-jack adaptor, etc. etc. etc. It's not a bug, it's a feature. Why would you sully your iWatch with all these cables?

Forbes article seems needlessly histrionic and conspiratorial, but Apple's corporate legacy is all histrionics and conspiracies.

lag∞n, Friday, 6 June 2014 14:40 (twelve years ago)

worst feeling as a developer is a job where you're implementing whatever your management or product designer told you to do and thinking "ain't nobody gonna use this"

a strange man (mh), Friday, 6 June 2014 14:56 (twelve years ago)

on the bright side, it's really easy to support code no one uses

Only Apple

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Friday, 20 June 2014 15:22 (eleven years ago)

In re the phone size, having gone in and looked at phones yesterday I think there's just some kind of psychological effect from seeing all these bigger-screened phones that makes the iphone start to look puny. Also I find the 4s screen annoyingly small to read books on and I've increasingly been using my phone as an e-reader. So I think they're kind of forced to do a bigger screen or else risk customers being like "fuck it, I'm switching." At the same time some of the samsungs and htc's are stupidly large, and even the galaxy s5 felt too big in my hand.

Hier Komme Die Warum Jetzt (Hurting 2), Friday, 20 June 2014 16:46 (eleven years ago)

I mean the 5/5s screen is bigger than the 4s obviously but it's a pretty small difference.

I had a HTC One before switching back and a Samsung S5 for a day (before I discovered that Verizon doesn't work at all at my house or office) - there's really no difference in the 5s and the larger screens if you're reading in the Kindle app. Even the difference in words/page is nominal.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Wednesday, 2 July 2014 22:21 (eleven years ago)

Uh, no. The 5.5 will be 38% larger than the current 4 inches. Math don't lie.

calstars, Thursday, 3 July 2014 01:24 (eleven years ago)

Is anyone here running iOS 8 on T-Mobile (US)? Amongst the new features in today's beta release is wi-fi calling, and that (along with unlimited music streaming) could push me away from Verizon, but only if it works well. My house is in a dead-zone valley where none of the carriers has a strong signal. How does the hand-off to cellular work if you leave home during a call?

http://www.tampabay.com/news/courts/criminal/tampa-man-accused-of-scamming-apple-out-of-309768/2189776

A man ran up a $7,753.22 bill at an Apple store. When his debit card was declined, he pretended to call his bank. He gave the store clerk a fake authorization code to punch into the card reader. And that's how the man, 24-year-old Sharron Laverne Parrish Jr. of Tampa, scammed one of the biggest high-tech companies in the world — not once but 42 times — totaling $309,768, according to federal court records.
