Lee626, Tuesday, 3 June 2014 13:34 (twelve years ago)

anyone install the ios8 beta? I've put it on a spare ipad, and it crashed when I try to move or delete apps. Wondering if the phone is the same?

sofatruck, Tuesday, 3 June 2014 16:41 (twelve years ago)

Super-beta at the moment. Wouldn't use it for anything other than code testing right now.

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 4 June 2014 06:20 (twelve years ago)

for some reason I was enthusiastic and installed 10.10 yesterday. not bad! some visual glitches, though. the menu bar text disappeared completely and it failed to show the right app name a couple times.

a strange man (mh), Wednesday, 4 June 2014 13:58 (twelve years ago)

if you put any of that shit on your primary device, you're nuts

markers, Wednesday, 4 June 2014 14:12 (twelve years ago)

Hah I just couldn't find an appropriate post of yours to quote thasall

― 龜, Monday, June 2, 2014 11:28 PM

i know very little about pre-1997 apple, but i had heard of that

markers, Wednesday, 4 June 2014 14:13 (twelve years ago)

I guess my laptop isn't really my primary anymore! But yeah, I have backups out the wazoo.

a strange man (mh), Wednesday, 4 June 2014 14:51 (twelve years ago)

tbh my primary device at home is my iPad or iPhone

a strange man (mh), Wednesday, 4 June 2014 14:51 (twelve years ago)

i've been running beta OSs on my main system since windows whistler without much issue aside from app compatibility

thanks Gruber, but some of us don't just have extra ios devices lying around.

sofatruck, Wednesday, 4 June 2014 15:16 (twelve years ago)

great insult. it's good advice, even if you're too stupid to take it

markers, Wednesday, 4 June 2014 15:16 (twelve years ago)

also: fuck you.

markers, Wednesday, 4 June 2014 15:17 (twelve years ago)

idk, if you're a fledgling developer and need to use new API stuff you're kind of stuck with the crashes

a strange man (mh), Wednesday, 4 June 2014 15:18 (twelve years ago)

relax dude... I've heard your direct quote from him too. But reality is often far from ideal. Just wondering if anyone has tried it out.

sofatruck, Wednesday, 4 June 2014 15:22 (twelve years ago)

I think markers is trying to say he has one iOS device and would like to try the OS already but feels it'd be a bad idea

a strange man (mh), Wednesday, 4 June 2014 15:24 (twelve years ago)

look, i have one ipad and zero iphones, so i get it. this is what it comes down to: if i were a developer and needed to test my iphone or ipad app on actual hardware in addition to the simulator, i would put ios 8 on my ipad and run the apps there. but in doing so i'd be accepting that my system would be unstable for a little while, perhaps even past the launch. (ios 7 still does wonky shit.) so, if you're not a developer, there's no way you should put the beta on there unless you're absolutely okay with the consequences

markers, Wednesday, 4 June 2014 15:26 (twelve years ago)

who was it . . . marco? who did this and then regretted it? i don't remember exactly

markers, Wednesday, 4 June 2014 15:28 (twelve years ago)

but optimize for whatever you want. if it's testing out the latest and greatest, do it. otherwise, don't

markers, Wednesday, 4 June 2014 15:28 (twelve years ago)

Yeah I'm aware that betas are buggy. I'm working on an ios project right now and as I said upthread I've got it running on a spare ipad already, but there are some things you can't test with an ipad/ipod touch and I don't have a spare iphone so I am cautious about upgrading the one I do have. I was just asking if anyone here has first hand experience with how buggy this one is at the moment.

lag∞n, Wednesday, 4 June 2014 15:34 (twelve years ago)

gbx, Wednesday, 4 June 2014 15:35 (twelve years ago)

cool to see people who i thought were acquaintences putting me down

markers, Wednesday, 4 June 2014 16:10 (twelve years ago)

couldn't care less what gbx thinks tho

markers, Wednesday, 4 June 2014 16:10 (twelve years ago)

hey lagoon, don't talk to me anymore, ok?

markers, Wednesday, 4 June 2014 16:11 (twelve years ago)

i'm not happy. thanks for calling me "you reader of many blogs," and for making me have negative feelings towards you, someone whom i've never really been a dick to. i don't get it. is there something wrong with expressing an opinion? sorry i don't know objective-c or swift. there's a chance i will at some point. i do understand some of the basics of programming. but i should still be able to come here and give an opinion without getting attacked unprovoked, especially by you. you also are really, seriously underselling how much i know about things by calling me that. but cool job attempting to dismiss me and paint you and the others as somehow superior.

markers, Wednesday, 4 June 2014 16:30 (twelve years ago)

don't chum the water dude

Look at this joke I've recognised, do you recognise it as well? (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 4 June 2014 16:31 (twelve years ago)

i would much rather accomplish what i need to accomplish today than sit here feeling like this, but there's no way i'm just going to walk away

markers, Wednesday, 4 June 2014 16:34 (twelve years ago)

it's too bad that the ilx apple community isn't much better than it is

markers, Wednesday, 4 June 2014 16:34 (twelve years ago)

back on topic

I got one of those trash can mac pros at work yesterday. weird how elegant it is meant to be but realistically i have to plug in like 15 chords in the back and it just looks ridiculous after that. Fast tho.

Strictly EZ Snappin' Nhex (Spottie), Wednesday, 4 June 2014 16:37 (twelve years ago)

lol "back on topic"

no

markers, Wednesday, 4 June 2014 16:38 (twelve years ago)

thanks for putting me in this mood. i did not need that this week

markers, Wednesday, 4 June 2014 16:39 (twelve years ago)

you know what, i'm just not going to post in this thread anymore. have fun

markers, Wednesday, 4 June 2014 16:40 (twelve years ago)

As someone with some degree of experience being diplomatic on internet forums, I'd suggest it's as much about semantics. if you put any of that shit on your primary device, you're nuts could raise some hackles.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 4 June 2014 17:45 (twelve years ago)

I don't want to fight about it. markers I don't really know you, but I appreciate your enthusiasm here. Sorry for being snarky, let's get past this.

Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 4 June 2014 17:55 (twelve years ago)

markers, nobody is criticizing you personally, just your comment that raised some hackles because it came off as abrasive and a little out of left field

go have some iced tea or something and walk around the block before reapproaching the thread

a strange man (mh), Wednesday, 4 June 2014 17:58 (twelve years ago)

"I know a lot more than you think" is never really a good look, in any situation, though

a strange man (mh), Wednesday, 4 June 2014 18:20 (twelve years ago)

it's also not a good look to condescend to someone who has higher level knowledge than your particular expertise. good luck ever having a good relationship with a manager if that is your attitude. there were a few nagls in this exchange.

Sufjenga Cat Giffin (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 4 June 2014 18:31 (twelve years ago)

for what it's worth, calling people out who are just throwing around ideas is kind of weird. I kind of postulated about what the heck Iovine/Dre would be able to do in Apple and posted a link to someone else having the same speculation, but I wasn't really attached to that idea at all -- I just kind of thought it'd be neat, but very unlikely

the hard insistence that people, especially these blog pundits, _know_ things and that you can _know_ what apple or whoever will do by reading these tea leaves that are apple fan blogs, biographies, and historical detours is magical thinking

a strange man (mh), Wednesday, 4 June 2014 18:40 (twelve years ago)

yeah, I just think "lol u realize you reader of many blogs are giving computer advice to actual software developers right" is an attitude that someone with overly rigid thinking tends to have. you can miss out on some good ideas with that attitude. obviously, the stakes were lower in this case, but that then begs why one needs to be so dickishly defensive about credentials.
