Yeah it's crazy, its like the moon door might have actually come directly from the source material.

djenter the dragon? (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 2 June 2014 22:18 (twelve years ago)

iirc in the source material it is an actual door not a big gaping hole in the floor you might accidentally step into while reading email on your iPhone

resulting post (rogermexico.), Monday, 2 June 2014 22:20 (twelve years ago)

Depiction of the Moon Door is no problem for me, quite a fan of bad guys in general having Jabba's-Palace-style trap-doors in the floor through which underlings can be thrown at a moment's notice.

Windsor Davies, Monday, 2 June 2014 22:24 (twelve years ago)

Easy way of telling if someone is trustworthy or not is if they have a moon door in their crib.

oh ok it's from the books so it can't be bad writing

hug niceman (psychgawsple), Monday, 2 June 2014 22:45 (twelve years ago)

Sure it can be bad writing by GRRM, your post just made it sound like it was a conscious decision for the TV show for visual reinforcement of the implied threat. I was just responding to that aspect.

it's ridiculous but kinda awesome and campy too. definitely on the sillier end of things for a show so enamored with nihilistic violence

xp - did not mean to imply that with my post, i am not a book-bro so didn't realize the depiction was different in the first place

hug niceman (psychgawsple), Monday, 2 June 2014 22:53 (twelve years ago)

Tommen isn't an interesting character at all but as the kid who would be king it wouldn't have hurt for the show to have reminded us that he existed every now and again.

I'm pissed they decided to age up Tommen because (not really a spoiler) my favorite part of the li'l kiddo's rule was how childishly excited he was to sign his name on whatever royal documents were set in front of him.

it's about equality, ladies (reddening), Monday, 2 June 2014 22:58 (twelve years ago)

The Mountain/Viper fight might have benefited from some bystander carnage.

panic disorder pixie (Sanpaku), Monday, 2 June 2014 22:59 (twelve years ago)

so the mountain def dies in the books? seems okay in the show? just wounded.

Look at this joke I've recognised, do you recognise it as well? (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 3 June 2014 01:26 (twelve years ago)

Yes, he is.

"grrm's world is like medieval europe except no one ever dies of sickness or through mundane yet"

Except Khal Drogo?

Loved Tyrion asking for books about morons.

Still not getting how the moon door is bad writing. Why wouldn't you have one? I wouldn't be surprised if some real castles did have something similar.

I was under the impression The Mountain died.

Keeping my fingers crossed for Cersei getting a satisfying death but I doubt it will be as good as Joffrey or Lysa's.

I was very fond of Oberyn (I'd like to see that actor in other stuff) and that was difficult to swallow but it's a welcome change after endless streams of unconvincing survival in so many stories. Peter Jackson's King Kong and Hobbit are terrible for that and even for a kid's film Pixar's Up really takes the piss (as a child it would have upset me because I'd think it was a lie and that the "real" characters all fallen to their deaths. I hated The Labyrinth because I knew the "real" good guys all drowned in shit or lived an unspeakably horrible life of smelling so terrible that they couldn't stop vomiting. I don't know if most children are like that but I could never brush off any morbid implication, all heroes really fell off the cliff edge and died), it's a real pet hate of mine.

My brother assures me that there is a string of amazing things just about to happen. I'm excited.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Tuesday, 3 June 2014 02:39 (twelve years ago)

Cersei needs to outlive pretty much everyone including all her kids as max punishment

So did LF and Sansa bang or what? He reached a creepy peak last night with "the first time I saw you you were just a child" but that shot of her as silhouette with the sun flashing behind her was superb.

nashwan, Tuesday, 3 June 2014 10:17 (twelve years ago)

Jesus Christ, the punch followed by the teeth scattering across the floor. Just the sound effect alone!

I can handle almost anything gore-wise, but teeth are always a real sore spot.

That gummy scream - fucked me up good.

Walter Galt, Tuesday, 3 June 2014 10:57 (twelve years ago)

"grrm's world is like medieval europe except no one ever dies of sickness or through mundane yet"

Didn't Robert Baratheon die from being gored by a wild boar while hunting, though it took him several days to die, so presumably it got infected?
(Might be remembering this wrong...)

Walter Galt, Tuesday, 3 June 2014 10:58 (twelve years ago)

man i was away from my computer for a couple weeks and was very disappointed that there was only one episode waiting when i returned, uncool

lag∞n, Tuesday, 3 June 2014 10:58 (twelve years ago)

btw u guys take this show too srs it is not a srs show

lag∞n, Tuesday, 3 June 2014 11:01 (twelve years ago)

This show is boring now isn't it.

Severed heads not really cutting it for me any more especially when they happen at 'totally unexpected' moments. They should rename it Yawn of Yawns.

now I'm the grandfather (dog latin), Tuesday, 3 June 2014 11:16 (twelve years ago)

Only joking, it's still good. I guess what I found strange about the whole Oberyn thing is that I didn't really get that he was necessarily supposed to be a sympathetic character. At least when he was introduced, he came off as a bit of a sleazeball so I was surprised when immediately people started rooting for him.

And yeah, that was totally a Princess Bride tribute, wasn't it?

now I'm the grandfather (dog latin), Tuesday, 3 June 2014 11:18 (twelve years ago)

Maybe they feel like me that all those feel wish fulfilling happy stories need to be corrected? Maybe we'll get to see a Jennifer Connelly lookalike drown in shit; talking dogs, an old man and little boy fall off mountains and several other bleaker versions.

I doubt it will happen but there is still time for Oberyn's wife to run screaming to his side and revive him with the Lord Of Light.
Thinking about it more, with White Walkers, the whole Ice/Fire thing, maybe rebirth on either side will eventually become a bigger thing? Reborn Ned Stark fighting white walkers? Doubt it, but I'm sure the Lord Of Light stuff will become central because it has been proven real even if it isn't what the worshippers think it is.

I still predict that some of the Lannisters will eventually be killed by the Stark children. I think this story has wish fulfilment too. Imagine Tywin seeing Arya again.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Tuesday, 3 June 2014 12:17 (twelve years ago)

Meant to say "feel good" in first line.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Tuesday, 3 June 2014 12:18 (twelve years ago)

I doubt it will happen but there is still time for Oberyn's wife to run screaming to his side and revive him with the Lord Of Light.

Well I guess he'd have a few more holes in himself to play with.

nashwan, Tuesday, 3 June 2014 12:35 (twelve years ago)

Lord of Light would have to be an expert taxidermist to help Oberyn out...

Evan, Tuesday, 3 June 2014 13:27 (twelve years ago)

ew.

socki (s1ocki), Tuesday, 3 June 2014 13:28 (twelve years ago)

ha he's gonna get revived like Deathklok's cook in Metalocalypse

On-the-spot Dicespin (DJP), Tuesday, 3 June 2014 13:35 (twelve years ago)

I'm sure the red lady would praise his skills of unmushing eyeballs and unparalleled dentistry.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Tuesday, 3 June 2014 13:35 (twelve years ago)

Just wanna say this was the most well-shot episode I can remember. The lighting in particular was brilliant throughout.

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Tuesday, 3 June 2014 13:38 (twelve years ago)

His whole head was smushed.

that scene really popped

eye eye eye

socki (s1ocki), Tuesday, 3 June 2014 14:07 (twelve years ago)

I was just annoyed that Prancer/Dorn dude/whatever his name is didn't finish off the Mountain when he had the chance

idiot

now we're all fucked, way to go

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 3 June 2014 14:13 (twelve years ago)

tyrions face though

i thought he was going to puke

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 3 June 2014 14:14 (twelve years ago)

Does he puke in the book? He does in that comic posted above.

circa1916, Tuesday, 3 June 2014 14:15 (twelve years ago)

p sure the mountain died tho, I guess he still wins cause the other guy died first

lag∞n, Tuesday, 3 June 2014 14:16 (twelve years ago)

Spoiler, perhaps, but yeah, he pukes in the book. The comic is very faithful to the book-version.

Frederik B, Tuesday, 3 June 2014 14:21 (twelve years ago)

prob figured two puke scenes was too much

lag∞n, Tuesday, 3 June 2014 14:21 (twelve years ago)

wise to leave that out of the show. i think if they had tyrion puke on screen some viewers may have literally thrown up as well.

ryan, Tuesday, 3 June 2014 14:23 (twelve years ago)

That's exactly why they should've put it in at the very end.

Dreamland, Tuesday, 3 June 2014 14:40 (twelve years ago)

Tyrion projectile vomiting and cutting immediately to black woulda been pretty awesome it’s true

circa1916, Tuesday, 3 June 2014 14:46 (twelve years ago)

Maybe Oberyn will get revived and still insist on The Mountain confessing in the right manner.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Tuesday, 3 June 2014 15:03 (twelve years ago)

Tyrion projectile vomiting and cutting immediately to black woulda been pretty awesome it’s true

i would prefer a "Stand By Me" stile vomiting dominoes effect – where Tyrion vomiting triggers Cerci to vomit onto Pycel, who vomits onto Tywin, who sneers - while the entire crowed vomits on one another in a horrible cascading tidal wave of puke, so astonishing we almost forget we just watched Oberyn get his head squashed like a grape.

Porto for Pyros (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 3 June 2014 15:19 (twelve years ago)

Would have also liked for the unlucky stable-boy to have gotten half his head chopped off. Also from the comic and book.

Frederik B, Tuesday, 3 June 2014 15:22 (twelve years ago)

I felt like there was a lot of mirroring of earlier scenes/dynamics going on:

obv. this tragic trail-by-combat mirrored the comic one with Bron

Sansa lying to save LF mirrors Shae lying to condemn Tyrion

Bolton's relationship with his bastard mirrors Ned's relationship with his

relentlessly pecking at peace (President Keyes), Tuesday, 3 June 2014 16:15 (twelve years ago)

oh yeah, and once again Arya and the Hound showing up right around the time one of Arya's relatives in murdered--first tragic, then laffs

relentlessly pecking at peace (President Keyes), Tuesday, 3 June 2014 16:16 (twelve years ago)

Forgot to talk about that, is Littlefinger and Sansa just about to bump into Arya and Hound? It would be nice to see the sisters together and I can imagine Arya causing Littlefinger trouble. Is that guard not likely to tell that the sister is there or is Littlefinger keeping Sansa a secret from his guards?

Robert Adam Gilmour, Tuesday, 3 June 2014 16:25 (twelve years ago)

x-post: Yes, the show is very much repeating itself, and it's becoming more and more ridiculous. You're absolutely right.

Frederik B, Tuesday, 3 June 2014 16:27 (twelve years ago)

idg the thing w Roose - is he Jon Snow's brother?

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 3 June 2014 16:28 (twelve years ago)

"Snow" is just the last name given to any bastard in the North.

djenter the dragon? (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 3 June 2014 16:29 (twelve years ago)

Yeah no-one else knows it's Sansa except the three people she told. Presumably LF will prevent Sansa and Arya from reuniting somehow. Brienne probably doesn't know what she looks like either right?

nashwan, Tuesday, 3 June 2014 16:29 (twelve years ago)

Oh wait Robin knows it's Sansa too but LF has wisely already sent him packing ha
