todd barry strand of this was just so much fun
― schlump, Wednesday, 28 May 2014 01:56 (twelve years ago)
it was such a todd barry bit too i was cackling from start to finish
― smooth hymnal (m bison), Wednesday, 28 May 2014 02:13 (twelve years ago)
Don't think I quite knew what a 'shit-eating grin' meant til I saw his sequence
― 龜, Wednesday, 28 May 2014 02:18 (twelve years ago)
would be very surprised if that wasn't an adaptation of an actual todd barry story
― Look at this joke I've recognised, do you recognise it as well? (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 28 May 2014 02:26 (twelve years ago)
so the flashback, where they decided to get divorced and had sex one last time - is that the wife with whom he had his kids, and is now divorced, and with whom he's trying to sort out jane's issues with school?
― it definitely wasn't designed to be a pants pocket player (stevie), Wednesday, 28 May 2014 22:45 (twelve years ago)
i think so.
the younger guy playing younger louis had louis ck's mannerisms and way of speaking down pat
― display name changed. (amateurist), Wednesday, 28 May 2014 22:46 (twelve years ago)
yes, that's louis and his ex-wife
― Clay, Wednesday, 28 May 2014 22:46 (twelve years ago)
cool. he was definitely a good young-louis.
― it definitely wasn't designed to be a pants pocket player (stevie), Wednesday, 28 May 2014 22:47 (twelve years ago)
the pacing and framing of this show is unlike anything else. It's not always funny but it's... something
― Οὖτις, Wednesday, 28 May 2014 22:52 (twelve years ago)
what makes louie brilliant is that louis knows there's greater things than LOLs
― it definitely wasn't designed to be a pants pocket player (stevie), Thursday, 29 May 2014 08:23 (twelve years ago)
uh, a lot of people who don't have as much talent as louis c.k. know that.
― display name changed. (amateurist), Thursday, 29 May 2014 08:36 (twelve years ago)
The flashback sequence would have been amazing/perfect were it not for the last line. Like, we get that it's Lily's conception already.
― Simon H., Thursday, 29 May 2014 18:49 (twelve years ago)
it thought wasn't just exposition, though. it actually made her laugh, which is important to louis because she usually denies him that connection/approval. she was fighting it in that "for $800..." scene because that's like giving in for her; it breaks the tension in their dynamic.
― slugbuggy, Thursday, 29 May 2014 22:58 (twelve years ago)
"i thought," i meant to say.

I generally like this show but I watched the louis'-daughter-nearly-walk-in-front-of-a-subway-train episode last night and it was so boring. The bit with the russian lady getting trapped in a lift was pretty formulaic farce as well.
― everyday sheeple (Michael B), Friday, 30 May 2014 11:28 (twelve years ago)
she didn't nearly walk in front of a subway train
― Number None, Friday, 30 May 2014 13:29 (twelve years ago)
ok i tuned in at the point where he was giving out to her about it
― everyday sheeple (Michael B), Friday, 30 May 2014 14:27 (twelve years ago)
Yeah, I guess watching the very, very end of a long sequence without any context is probably pretty boring.
― Surprise, It's My Butt (Old Lunch), Friday, 30 May 2014 14:45 (twelve years ago)
Yeah, the idea of a young girl saying "daddy, it's ok this is just a dream" and stepping off a train seconds before the doors close, then being approached by a stranger, while her father takes multiple trains and runs through stations screaming while the older sister tries to calm him while trying to stay calm, totally boring!
― dan selzer, Friday, 30 May 2014 14:47 (twelve years ago)
Like opening a page of a good short story and reading it out of context.
― That's So (Eazy), Friday, 30 May 2014 14:59 (twelve years ago)
Turns out I find this show much less compelling when Louie isn't onscreen, the flashback scene bored me.
Ivanka was hilarious in the last episode though.

This story arc "Elevator" is the best thing he's done since Season One...
― Iago Galdston, Saturday, 31 May 2014 23:11 (twelve years ago)
did louie overdub his voice onto young louie?
― Philip Nunez, Saturday, 31 May 2014 23:27 (twelve years ago)
no
― Number None, Saturday, 31 May 2014 23:28 (twelve years ago)
That kid did a great job with his mannerisms.
― Vera said that?! (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Saturday, 31 May 2014 23:29 (twelve years ago)
i really couldnt figure out if it was his actual voice!
― socki (s1ocki), Monday, 2 June 2014 01:06 (twelve years ago)
To clarify it's purely because their kids are white that I find it distracting. I'd feel exactly the same way if a show cast a white woman as the biological mother of black children FWIW.

90 minute episode?!
― Οὖτις, Monday, 2 June 2014 17:16 (twelve years ago)
That was dumb. I didn't like this episode at all. The stand-up near the end was just boring and interminable, and I don't know what he expects us to think about the sexual assault scene after that.
― Dan I., Tuesday, 3 June 2014 04:03 (twelve years ago)
i thought the sandy thing felt very very very honest and true to my experience in a lot of ways, if not to the letter than certainly in spirit

boy, once that elevator story arc ended, it was back to meh....
― Iago Galdston, Tuesday, 3 June 2014 15:30 (twelve years ago)
Thought the standup about wifebeaters, etc., was pretty timely.
― That's So (Eazy), Wednesday, 4 June 2014 03:34 (twelve years ago)
He did that routine on SNL a few months ago I think. Or somewhere else on TV.
― dan selzer, Wednesday, 4 June 2014 04:16 (twelve years ago)
It was obviously placed there for a reason.
― Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Wednesday, 4 June 2014 04:49 (twelve years ago)
I'd assume that the episode was in the can for a while. Maybe I'm wrong, I don't know how those things work.
― dan selzer, Wednesday, 4 June 2014 05:00 (twelve years ago)
Oh yeah, I don't think it was done after the shooting, but it makes the whole routine and episode resonate even more.
― That's So (Eazy), Wednesday, 4 June 2014 05:01 (twelve years ago)
It felt very specific to the episode and the theme of Louie being heartbroken and ignoring Grodin's talk and being desperate. I guess it depends on how it plays out in the coming episodes (This was Pamela: Part 1 but the next two episodes are Into the Woods Parts 1 and 2 so maybe we'll go back to Pamela in the final week?).
― Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Wednesday, 4 June 2014 05:03 (twelve years ago)
After the rape joke thing last year he's definitely aware of what he's doing, especially in that scene. It's blocked and shot to be as menacing and pathetic as possible.
― Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Wednesday, 4 June 2014 05:04 (twelve years ago)
well that's pretty easy to answer
48 09 "Elevator Part 6" 49 10 "Pamela Part 1"50 11 "In the Woods Part 1"51 12 "In the Woods Part 2" 52 13 "Pamela Part 2" 53 14 "Pamela Part 3"
― Clay, Wednesday, 4 June 2014 05:36 (twelve years ago)
Well that'll be interesting.
― Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Wednesday, 4 June 2014 05:45 (twelve years ago)
i hate the pamela character, although the show gets some laffs from her from time to time
― display name changed. (amateurist), Wednesday, 4 June 2014 10:04 (twelve years ago)
it was funny how quickly the show moved from "elegaic farewell to love" to "louis loses all self-respect"
― display name changed. (amateurist), Wednesday, 4 June 2014 10:05 (twelve years ago)
elegiac
just started watching this show, from the beginning, via netflix. stunned by how good it is. i know it's a comedy, but parts of episodes one -- three had me nearly in tears. not sobbing-like; just teary. show gets the sadness of life.
― Daniel, Esq 2, Thursday, 5 June 2014 00:06 (twelve years ago)
sometimes he gooses it a bit too much for my tastes, with the music and whatnot
but yeah his range is impressive
― display name changed. (amateurist), Thursday, 5 June 2014 00:07 (twelve years ago)
only saw him one time before this, in a brief stand-up clip on youtube that i didn't think was funny. only tried it on netflix cuz i didn't have time for a longer show or movie. now hooked.
― Daniel, Esq 2, Thursday, 5 June 2014 00:11 (twelve years ago)
skipped around and found a particularly uncomfortable episode -- season one, episode 9 -- where the 42 year-old louie is on a late-night date at a doughnut shop, and he's forced to humiliate himself to avoid a fistfight with a high-school bully. his date's reaction is sad and riveting. there's a discussion on the "another fucking shooting spree" thread, in the wake of those california shootings, about how the idea of masculinity can have warping effects on men's view of themselves and other men and what it means to be a man. this episode gets at that.
