i was propositioned, not once but twice, standing outside of one of my college dorms (yes, indcidently, on the corner. it was apparently a high-traffic area for that kind of thing.) so while i've never been a whore, i've at least looked like one.

I was once offered money for a blowjob on Charing Cross Road. I politely declined. And walked away very quickly.

Years ago I found this site by following a link from somewhere else and it completely fucking blew my mind. www.punternet.com. There are A LOT of people out there visiting prostitutes. Link probably NSFW.

Also, engaging in sexual acts with a stripper counts. I personally know at least 3 men who have done this and doubt any of them would answer yes if asked if they'd been with a prostitute.

ENBB, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 16:21 (eighteen years ago)

There used to be (well, still is, in some quarters) the idea that nice girls *don't* have sex at all. Therefore visiting prostitutes was an item for manliness, showing that you were having sex. I think that it's much more acceptible these days, the idea that even nice girls can and do have sex - with the advent of free love, as it were, the idea of having to *pay* for sex became more demeaning than the cache of having sex.

But I thought more men were visiting prostitutes these days? Or maybe they're just more honest about it? Or maybe I made the whole thing up?

Tom D., Tuesday, 4 September 2007 16:22 (eighteen years ago)

NRQ - giving.

Also, I didn't really need a tenner that much.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 16:22 (eighteen years ago)

but this was a tenner plus a wanger

ken c, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 16:25 (eighteen years ago)

It's been suggested there are more prostitutes in the UK these days, because of illegal people trafficking from the continent in the last 10 years. Guess this means the demand was there to meet this and/or has risen with it. Could all be spurious tho.

blueski, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 16:25 (eighteen years ago)

I reckon it's more acceptable and more common than, say, fifteen years ago

conversely the conditions seem to have worsened for the girls brought over then forced into it. read this article and got really depressed/angry.

blueski, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 16:35 (eighteen years ago)

i've paid money to have sexual intercourse with a prostitute.

andi, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 16:35 (eighteen years ago)

OK, that's one of the most depressing things I've read in a long time.

I guess I was wrong.

i'm not being facetious but i think prostitution has become more formalized/professionalized if you will in modern times. i'm thinking of hogarth's london as the comparison.

Yeah Re: escorts versus prostitutes on the street.

humansuit, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 16:47 (eighteen years ago)

with the advent of free love, as it were, the idea of having to *pay* for sex became more demeaning than the cache of having sex.

Yes, exactly.

There are still circles where it's a point of bragadacchio - city boys, stereotypically the military. There was a time, even into the 20th century (maybe the turning point was post-WWII?), when it was acceptable or common for men of all walks of life to visit a prostitute to make themselves men.

But now, even if it's more common, it's generally not something men will be proud of or joke about, because needing to frequent a prostitute for actual sex (rub 'n' tugs perhaps a different issue) is seen as pathetic, there must be something deficient about you.

My sense is that brothers used to be what titty bars are now -- questionable but acceptable.

Mark C, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 17:12 (eighteen years ago)

i used to live with two 'escorts.' i'd drive them to their calls and wait and take them home. they usually just stripped or gave handjobs. sad, messed up girls. it was a low point in my life, being around that.

jergïns, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 17:36 (eighteen years ago)

Andi should come forth with details.

This is dangerously close to, I bought my wife a thingie and she gave me a beej, territory.

libcrypt, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 17:59 (eighteen years ago)

I've done it, don't see the big deal. I don't get people's hang-ups (a real one, not a fake one). I've enjoyed it the few times I've done it.

bell_labs, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 19:07 (eighteen years ago)

the "i don't get people's hangups" excuse just, i dunno. it sounds like typical sex offender language.

bell_labs, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 19:09 (eighteen years ago)

I dunno, isn't that the logical extension of the majority (for ILX, anyway) sex-positive position? Personal choices aside, I suspect we mostly agree that sex should be safely (for both parties) available for hire, if there's a market for it in the first place?

Laurel, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 19:11 (eighteen years ago)

Sex offender? Er.

libcrypt, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 19:12 (eighteen years ago)

That makes it sound like he's out molesting 8-year-old girls.

libcrypt, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 19:12 (eighteen years ago)

Well, there is the George Carlin argument: "Selling's legal. Fucking's legal. Why isn't selling fucking legal?"

Girolamo Savonarola, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 19:13 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, i dunno. legal or not, guys who go to prostitutes would still give me crepe vibe.

bell_labs, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 19:13 (eighteen years ago)

Which is exactly why I thought it was a stupid question for ILX, b/c enough people are going to be judging each o. based on the responses that you're not likely to get an actual interesting discussion from it.

Laurel, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 19:15 (eighteen years ago)

That makes it sound like he's out molesting 8-year-old girls.

yes, exactly, that is what it sounds like!

bell_labs, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 19:15 (eighteen years ago)

You can make a reasonable argument that prostitution is wrong, exploitative, and sexist, but it's far more tenuous to attempt to equate molestation with (soliciting) prostitution.

libcrypt, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 19:16 (eighteen years ago)

i'm just saying pedos use the same language to justify what they do.

bell_labs, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 19:17 (eighteen years ago)

They're on the same waterslide, eh?

libcrypt, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 19:18 (eighteen years ago)

"Babies are legal. Fucking is legal. Why isn't fucking babies legal?"

Oilyrags, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 19:18 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, bell, but I wd use the exact same language to defend lots of things from people who I think are wrong...? It's not like pedophiles have the market cornered on disagreeing w/ people about their opinions.

Laurel, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 19:19 (eighteen years ago)

Where's nabisco when you need an OTM?

libcrypt, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 19:20 (eighteen years ago)

Ie "I don't understand people's hang-ups about shooting guns/swimming in deep water/heights. I've enjoyed shooting/swimming/free-climbing the few times I've done it."

Bill Magill = NS? (hi 1PE!)

gabbneb, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 19:23 (eighteen years ago)

This thread is interesting to read, but to get a wide array of straight answers it is better approached as poll material. btw, I have never been a prostitute or been with a prostitute, mainly because I find either possibility impossible to imagine myself doing, which tends to strangle the possibility before it ever could take on a tinge of reality.
