has iBooks stopped being a piece of shit? Deeply insulted when it hid all my pdfs, fucked the metadata etc. Kindle & PDFexpert now. Turn epubs into mobis with calibre.

But all feels a bit inbetweeny, like something open and better and coherent is just a year or two away.

woof, Friday, 16 May 2014 22:22 (twelve years ago)

if they're moving away from ePub, they're taking their sweet ass time about it

Nhex, Friday, 16 May 2014 22:28 (twelve years ago)

Using iBooks for reading. Calibre for organization, de-DRMing, etc.

Elvis Telecom, Saturday, 17 May 2014 00:11 (twelve years ago)

Is it possible to de-DRM Amazon purchases and load them to iBooks? Haven't tried that direction.

a strange man (mh), Saturday, 17 May 2014 00:26 (twelve years ago)

There's a Calibre plug-in that does it automatically: a p p r e n t i c e a l f at w 0 r d p r 3 3 s dot c 0 m

Once you do that, convert the mobi to epub.

Elvis Telecom, Saturday, 17 May 2014 02:25 (twelve years ago)

btw, comic flow on ipad is a better comics reader iirc

a strange man (mh), Saturday, 17 May 2014 02:27 (twelve years ago)

c&p from the product recs thread where it got no answers:

Ok so I have a mac and I have a bunch of high quality video of speakers talking. The video from the camera is MTS and MPG files, and it is chunked into 30 min segments becaue that is what the camera does. The audio has a crappy ground hum throughout.

imovie sucksssss and is terrible.

Here is want I want to do: join all the video, crop the very start and end junk out, _and_ extract the audio to a wav of whatever, so I can fix it in audacity and notch out the noise, then merge the new audio back in, then convert it so it can be uploaded.

What program should I use (not imovie!)

wat is teh waht (s.clover), Saturday, 17 May 2014 03:59 (twelve years ago)

Have you tried QuickTime?
There might be AppleScript to even do this automatically

i bought comic zeal last night and like it a lot.

sitting on a claud all day gotta make your butt numb (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 17 May 2014 15:12 (twelve years ago)

I honestly don't remember! I think that Comic Zeal might have had some weirdness with page flipping in the past.

a strange man (mh), Saturday, 17 May 2014 15:54 (twelve years ago)

do you guys use this in addition to comixology or in place of it?

markers, Saturday, 17 May 2014 16:01 (twelve years ago)

FWIW, I use ComicBookLover: http://www.bitcartel.com/comicbooklover/

Elvis Telecom, Saturday, 17 May 2014 20:22 (twelve years ago)

Late but my podcast app of choice is called Castro and it's pretty slick and designy and works quite well.

markers, Monday, 19 May 2014 16:05 (twelve years ago)

silby thank you SO MUCH for the castro link. i've been using instacast and while it's better than the default podcast app it's fiddly. Castro feels much more natural. the big type helps too! #old

I spent a few bucks on Pocket Casts instead of continuing to struggle with Apple's Podcasts app. Very happy with it so far.

xpost i was just taking a peek at the lyons article. idk tho

markers, Monday, 19 May 2014 21:35 (twelve years ago)

do you guys use your iphone/ipad/other ios device as an alarm clock?

markers, Friday, 23 May 2014 17:26 (twelve years ago)

I do.

schwantz, Friday, 23 May 2014 17:26 (twelve years ago)

sure

a strange man (mh), Friday, 23 May 2014 17:27 (twelve years ago)

i stopped about 2 months ago after the third time it went off silently making me super late for work. Each time I had turned the ringer level up before bed. Said fuck it, got a battery operated travel clock.

Khamma chameleon (Jon Lewis), Friday, 23 May 2014 17:29 (twelve years ago)

haha. see, i want to just trust it though. that that will never happen. but right now i'm using this dedicated thing

markers, Friday, 23 May 2014 17:32 (twelve years ago)

did you have it on mute?

markers, Friday, 23 May 2014 17:32 (twelve years ago)

ugh i'm gonna have to come up with a checklist so i never fuck it up

markers, Friday, 23 May 2014 17:33 (twelve years ago)

mine works fine

a strange man (mh), Friday, 23 May 2014 17:35 (twelve years ago)

i have limited access to funds right now and would like this to save me $25

markers, Friday, 23 May 2014 17:38 (twelve years ago)

i've been using that sleep cycle app for years and it works like a charm

gbx, Friday, 23 May 2014 17:54 (twelve years ago)

i should say this was just the alarm function within the ios Clock, not a dedicated app.

Khamma chameleon (Jon Lewis), Friday, 23 May 2014 17:56 (twelve years ago)

it's fine. i did oversleep (by eight minutes) a couple nights ago when i had the ringer too low. first time that's happened in like a year.

recommend using Ella Fitzgerald "Fascinating Rhythm" as your alarm sound. seriously.

ugh (lukas), Friday, 23 May 2014 18:01 (twelve years ago)

On mine, it always seems to work, regardless if I'm on mute or whatever. I use the standard clock app.

schwantz, Friday, 23 May 2014 18:02 (twelve years ago)

IME the "silent alarm" actually means I was really fucking tired and chose the wrong alert tone before falling asleep

On-the-spot Dicespin (DJP), Friday, 23 May 2014 18:03 (twelve years ago)

I think that was the explanation for one of my incidents, but the other times it really seemed to have chosen the "get fired from your job" alert tone on its own contra my instructions.

Khamma chameleon (Jon Lewis), Friday, 23 May 2014 18:34 (twelve years ago)

use my phone as alarm, usually it goes fine. I like that I can change the tone so that if the tone I've been using starts to make me feel nauseous while waking me up I can switch to something new.

axe douche for men (silby), Friday, 23 May 2014 18:56 (twelve years ago)

i use it as an alarm clock when im traveling

otherwise i dont like to sleep in the same orom as my phone

YOU GET ME FOR 16 HOURS A DAY ALREADY

socki (s1ocki), Friday, 23 May 2014 19:19 (twelve years ago)

iPhone alarms work great

Nhex, Friday, 23 May 2014 21:44 (twelve years ago)

iPhone has been substitute clock-radio alarm for years now. Use the sleep-after-x-minutes function going to bed and waking with either sleep cycle or the standard clock.

Elvis Telecom, Saturday, 24 May 2014 00:59 (twelve years ago)

staind playing in the background is a nice touch
