"fat girl" one is less than brilliant but its good, the diffused end particularly

Opinion seems to be split on last night's. Some people are all "yes, Louie, yes!" and others are all "thanks, white MAN for hijacking a woman's platform you jerkface!"

I haven't watched it, but I already know both sides have a point.

i didn't like that one mostly b/c i don't like when louis works in character monologues to get across a moral/ideological/cultural point. it always feels super clumsy to me whether or not i agree with the content.

Like to think Louie was throwing some material out to give the thinkpieceratti something to do before season finales started coming thick and fast.

liked both of these. Vanessa's extended rant/monologue was good and definitely novel otoh it seemed to go on forever. Elevator bit was great. Subway bit was also great. That was yet another actress as his ex-wife right? Funny that he's carrying on the (unacknowledged) interracial conceit. Would be funny if he brought back Vanessa for another episode but had her played by a skinny actress.

I like that he's comfortable pairing two discrete ideas into a single episode, it's like an Animaniacs cartoon or something

This was definitely by design - the single take, the floating camera really situates you in Louie's discomfiture

Also when she nearly breaks the fourth wall, when she goes "imagine somebody over there saw us two right now" and points at the camera

I loved that during the whole thing a constant stream of a hundred joggers is passing by.

Yes both in the scene by the water and in the subway I was very conscious of the other people around and the camera, which seemed to pan nimbly at moments when the extras could have been in the sh. I guess those were extras? Or the general public?

He's a good director, the subway scene was actually very tense.

Thing about this show is that sometimes it's just not that funny and yet that has absolutely no bearing on whether or not it's a good episode, like he just has the bravery to not be funny for long periods of time. He's so good at hitting a particular emotional register and then holding you there for way longer than TV ever usually does. Last couple of episodes have been so great.

That said I pretty much cried laughing at the bin men scene in the opening episode.

I wish a hell of a lot more comedy was less concerned with trying to be funny.

Why? Like, why make/watch "comedy" that isn't interested in being funny?

Because it does other things, like make you think about shit you otherwise don't? Or because you empathise with or care about the characters?

Imo this idea of comedy being 'brave' for purposely not attempting to be funny is played out. Be brave, be interesting, be funny....but the latter should be the last to go
