I think I'm doing good at getting my base back. Getting up to 40 miles each week and have done 115 the past 30 days. Man, I can't wait until I hit those 50 mile weeks again.
― Jeff, Thursday, 8 May 2014 11:14 (twelve years ago)
Jeff, your numbers boggle my mind sometimes. They make my knees hurt. Getting back into it as well after having to take about 3 weeks off due to extended spousal biz travel and small kids who aren't cool with me disappearing for an hour or so at a time. this week has felt great - so nice to get up early and head out the door in warmth and light rather than cold and dark! looking at a half-marathon in a few weeks.
― tobo73, Thursday, 8 May 2014 12:28 (twelve years ago)
just ran a mile for time yesterday. 7:05!!! beat my previous time by over a minute and i haven't really been running much at all.
― (•̪●) (carne asada), Thursday, 8 May 2014 12:32 (twelve years ago)
Nice! I'd love to do a one mile race. I think it may be the best/worst thing. I think my fastest mile (during another longer run) was 6:15ish.
― Jeff, Thursday, 8 May 2014 13:03 (twelve years ago)
In a few recent instances after/during running, I have noticed that I perceive certain colors differently. Specifically chrome/silver, some greys and some off-whites have been shifting to teal for me. I've gone back to the same objects after cooling off and found them to be not teal in actuality. Anyone else experience anything similar? I don't have a lot of background with cardio (been jogging regularly since January; scattered attempts at exercise before that) so don't know if this is common.

Strange things can happen when you deplete your glycogen stores, including hallucinations. Does this happen after a hard workout effort?
My head gets really cloudy if that happens to me.
― Jeff, Thursday, 8 May 2014 20:03 (twelve years ago)
I I've been slowly but steadily, upgrading the time I spend running, so I guess yeah, most of my workouts I try to go slightly harder than the previous. But I'm not giving myself any big shocks. Brb, looking up glycogen.
― how's life, Thursday, 8 May 2014 20:12 (twelve years ago)
Having read up on it, I strongly doubt I'm depleting my glycogen stores though exercise.
― how's life, Thursday, 8 May 2014 20:15 (twelve years ago)
low blood sugar can cause changes in vision, and it'll happen way before glycogen stores are depleted if you're susceptible to it. also (less likely at this point in time) heat exhaustion/heat stroke.
― erry red flag (f. hazel), Thursday, 8 May 2014 20:50 (twelve years ago)
Did hill repeats tonight for the 1st time in a loooooong time. 6 x 45 seconds. Felt awesome. Also felt awesome that it is 88 glorious degrees.
― Jeff, Friday, 9 May 2014 01:51 (twelve years ago)
Any experience with foot balance insoles (or similar) folks?
I'm footballing not running but a recent change of footwear has really bbrought the pain
― james lipton and his francs (darraghmac), Saturday, 10 May 2014 22:42 (twelve years ago)
I have an improvised getup of heel cushions that I wear under my arches whenever I'm wearing shoes of any kind. I've tried "proper" customised insoles (not moulded though) but they didn't work for me. Finding what works for a given person seems to rely on a lot of trial and error ime.
― popchips: the next snapple? (seandalai), Wednesday, 14 May 2014 17:38 (twelve years ago)
I occasionally get a funny blind spot just to the right of my vision after running... could be glycogen related I guess
― JLB Credit (Jack BS), Wednesday, 14 May 2014 20:44 (twelve years ago)
Feeling good these days, even though I'm not hitting my paces in my faster intervals. Mileage is definitely back. 40 mile weeks still and the last 30 days I've run 166 miles. I should end up close to 180 for the month. Not where I was as far as volume back at the end of last year, but I was training for a marathon then. Now I'm just at a solid base.

that graph is so pretty!
― erry red flag (f. hazel), Wednesday, 28 May 2014 16:17 (twelve years ago)
I think data is the Primary reason I run.
― Jeff, Wednesday, 28 May 2014 16:33 (twelve years ago)
oh that is a nice graph! but knowing how to classify a given run would fill me with apprehension. what is WU/CD?
― john wahey (NickB), Wednesday, 28 May 2014 19:59 (twelve years ago)
have been doing lots of running here btw. i have done something crackers and entered an ultra in october. have always wanted to do one and figured if i didn't just enter it on a whim, then i'd just never ever get round to doing it. 100 miles though, so i've kind of gone in at the deep end. have got all summer long to train for it so i'm not too fazed at the moment and things have been going great so far - 50-60 miles each week and injury free so far. probably won't go too much further than 70 per week at most, so it's a managable amount of training, and i'm only doing it to complete it, so there's no real pressure to go for a time. downside of the event i've entered is that being in october, the weather is likely to be shitty, it'll be mud up to my ankles and there's only 11 hours of daylight, so i'll be doing the bulk of it in the dark, but hey, it's a nice chance to buy new kit and i do find prospective grimness of the whole thing quite appealing really. so anyhow, plenty of running in store for me...
― john wahey (NickB), Wednesday, 28 May 2014 20:22 (twelve years ago)
yeah, I definitely get a special joy from looking at my run in Garmin format on my computer after my runs... we ended up hiking 54 miles in Yosemite last week, and I am jazzed because one of our group had his Garmin going the entire time, and he said he'd email me the file so I could see our route and times!
― erry red flag (f. hazel), Wednesday, 28 May 2014 20:23 (twelve years ago)
xp!

^ that sounds the best!

It was pretty amazing! Snow on the day prevented us from doing Half Dome, but the whole park is just ridiculously gorgeous.
― erry red flag (f. hazel), Wednesday, 28 May 2014 20:33 (twelve years ago)
Xxxxxpost warm up/cool down. I don't use that classification very much, usually the miles before and after a key workout are just classified as Easy.
― Jeff, Wednesday, 28 May 2014 20:59 (twelve years ago)
Also in regards to workout classification, each run usually has several types of workouts in it, so I program them all as separate workouts into my Garmin. For example, tonight's workout:
4 miles out easy, then turn around and run 20 minutes @ goal half marathon pace (7:25) minus 10-15 seconds per mile. Then recover 3 minutes, then run 4 x 30 seconds on (hard), 30 seconds off, then easy running to reach 8.
So just one run will be broken into Easy, Tempo, Fartlek, Easy

5K this morning. Sub 20 or die trying. Will probably die.
― Jeff, Sunday, 15 June 2014 09:32 (twelve years ago)
20:15. Not the sub 20 I was looking for, but a PR by a minute and a half. I'll take it!
― Jeff, Sunday, 15 June 2014 17:55 (twelve years ago)
good work jeff! am positive you'll nail sub 20 next time. i did a low key 5k yesterday morning but i had a giant hangover after watching the football the night before and had to keep stopping to dry heave in the bushes. not much different from my usual 5k performance in that regard though.
― john wahey (NickB), Sunday, 15 June 2014 18:32 (twelve years ago)
Thanks! Splits were 6:39, 6:38, 6:22, 0.35. Kind of went out conservatively, but I think I could have gone out a tad faster and tried to hold on. I have another 5k in September, by then I think I'll be able to get sub 20.
― Jeff, Monday, 16 June 2014 01:29 (twelve years ago)
Whoa, I just skimmed this whole thread. I started it basically after I really just started to run. Kind of a mindfuck to realize the progress I made over the past six years.
― Jeff, Monday, 16 June 2014 01:49 (twelve years ago)
world cup watching is seriously mucking up my sleep. had that thing running home last night where i was almost falling asleep while i was running. my legs were automatically doing what they were supposed to do, but my whole conscious being was just slipping off and away somewhere else. it was like an out of body experience that i couldn't rouse myself from, and not in a transcendent way either, i was just really out of sync with the person doing the running. more of the same later i think, am fighting sleep already sitting at my desk.
― john wahey (NickB), Friday, 27 June 2014 15:26 (eleven years ago)
after seeing quite a bit recently in the guardian etc about the rise of the run commute, there was definitely a noticeable uptick of people running w/ backpacks when i went to london earlier this week. not sure what has made this a thing now and it didn't look like much fun dodging people on the super busy rush hour pavements tbh, but nice to see anyway
― john wahey (NickB), Friday, 27 June 2014 15:34 (eleven years ago)
planning to go on the treadmill for the first time in 6 months tonight. will be funny to find out how out of shape I am now...
― thomasintrouble, Friday, 27 June 2014 16:10 (eleven years ago)
I miss run commuting home, but it was just kind of a pain to deal with.
Speaking of pain, I have some Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome now. Which is bad timing because I JUST started back up with my coach this week.
― Jeff, Friday, 27 June 2014 21:06 (eleven years ago)
Things are going well, my knee pain has mostly subsided and I've picked a fall goal race. Going to be doing the Indianapolis Monumental Half Marathon in November. Big goal will be to run 1:30 to 1:32.
― Jeff, Thursday, 17 July 2014 01:33 (eleven years ago)
Nice. I'm thinking about doing the half marathon in Key West at the beginning of January 2015... seems like it would make for a fun trip.
― erry red flag (f. hazel), Thursday, 17 July 2014 05:25 (eleven years ago)
It's amazing how much better I felt after picking a goal race. My running is always sort of lacking motivation if I don't have a purpose, a long term goal. I love the whole process of methodically completing my training plan, working towards that goal. I actually don't care for racing that much, but it's the end to the means for me.
A good analogy for me is like playing an RPG video. I love the level grinding much more than the boss fight.
― Jeff, Thursday, 17 July 2014 11:11 (eleven years ago)
Saw Shalane Flanagan on my long run today!
― Jeff, Sunday, 20 July 2014 00:24 (eleven years ago)
oh excellent!
think i know know what you mean about training plans. it's like that's the learning stage and the race is just an end of term exam, and surely the former is the true accomplishment rather than just passing a test and getting a piece of paper
― john wahey (NickB), Sunday, 20 July 2014 04:29 (eleven years ago)
dunno if anyone else ever gets this, but i had one of those runs today where it felt like all the lubricant was missing from my joints. from the first step my knees especially felt like they were grinding away, not sure if this is due to poor hydration, a nutritional problem, fatigue or an immune system thing or what. has been pretty hot here, so maybe there's some heat related swelling going on? it actually became more tolerable after about the first eight miles as my legs warmed up or maybe they couldn't be bothered hurting anymore, but now i've stopped i feel as creaky as a rusty hinge. also i toe-punted a huge chunk of flint and my right middle toe has turned purple as a plum, and a farm gate with an over-zealous spring slammed straight into my left achilles and has taken a few layers of skin off too, but other than that it was pretty nice run, 20-something hot and hazy miles up on the downs.
― john wahey (NickB), Sunday, 20 July 2014 10:41 (eleven years ago)
i actually called the farmer who oiled that gate all types of horrible cunt, cursing them aloud under the broiling sun, while hopping up and down on my bashed and woeful toe, but i have that post-run calm now and all is forgiven
― john wahey (NickB), Sunday, 20 July 2014 10:48 (eleven years ago)
I don't think I've ever gotten the knee thing.
― Jeff, Sunday, 20 July 2014 13:55 (eleven years ago)
Been playing around with Strava some, specifically the heat map feature. It's cool.

someone else bashing out the miles running up and down the shore
― john wahey (NickB), Wednesday, 23 July 2014 20:35 (eleven years ago)
suffering from massive fatigue here, tried to run to work the last couple of days (4.5 miles) and i've got half the way there and had to give up and walk the remainder. nothing left in my legs at all, i'm just toast. everything aches and i have no energy for anything... like i got halfway down a corridor at work today just walking to fetch something and had to stop and lean against a wall for a micro-doze. the heat's not helping, but i think it's just the accummulation of 3 high-mileage months of running and a bit of a stressy time at work. going to take a few days off and get a load of sleep and try again on sunday maybe.
― john wahey (NickB), Wednesday, 23 July 2014 20:44 (eleven years ago)
Time off should help. Sometimes I need like a week to recharge.
― Jeff, Wednesday, 23 July 2014 20:50 (eleven years ago)
Did my first stroller run today with Ivy. It was a harder effort than I thought it would be. I was moving along at 8:20 pace for the first 2.5 miles but then had to bring it back down. Fun though.
― Jeff, Sunday, 27 July 2014 17:37 (eleven years ago)
Does anyone here use the special sport wash detergents for their running gear? Some of my older shirts are starting to... not smell very good, although the fabric is still in excellent shape.
― erry red flag (f. hazel), Sunday, 27 July 2014 20:22 (eleven years ago)
I actually only wash my running stuff every 2-3 runs. Usually just get right in the shower, take them off, rinse for a couple minutes then hang dry. Works pretty well IMO! Is that disgusting?
― tobo73, Monday, 28 July 2014 02:37 (eleven years ago)
Once the stink lock gets built in, just toss them. It's inevitable.
