xpost yeah I've always been disappointed by that, it's kind of a bargain-basement way to end it

I'm the last person to jump off the Laganja train, so don't mind me or anything! :D
― Call the Doctorb, the B is for Brownstein (Leee), Wednesday, 7 May 2014 18:21 (twelve years ago)
I have a problem with it too, but given the entire show is very near a satire of reality TV conventions, I'm not sure a truly genuine reaction is appropriate for the moment in the first place.

true
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 7 May 2014 18:22 (twelve years ago)
It was either that or the old way, which was a genuine coronation in a eerily empty room.
― Cronk's Not Cronk (Eric H.), Wednesday, 7 May 2014 18:32 (twelve years ago)
Yeah for me the real coronation moment now is when you see the three watching the actual broadcast. Last year's was intense!

Yeah here it is:

oh god Eric otm...the old way was hella weird
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 7 May 2014 18:39 (twelve years ago)
I'm not sure why they couldn't do a combination of both the pre-taped special and then split-screen the last segment with something like that video, Ned -- the queens watching the pre-taped live but allowing the audience to experience both simultaneously.

Quoting this because this reminds me that h II correctly pointed out on Facebook this important fact -- Adore quoted Phoebe Cates in Lace!
― Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 7 May 2014 18:49 (twelve years ago)
Doubtless true! But also they don't have to worry about FCC violations or whatever in the moment doing it the way they do, so.
that video was cool, ned
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 7 May 2014 18:50 (twelve years ago)
apropos of nothing, am I the last person to find out that Sharon & Alaska split?
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 7 May 2014 18:51 (twelve years ago)
I thought FCC violations didn't apply to non over-the-air channels.
― Cronk's Not Cronk (Eric H.), Wednesday, 7 May 2014 18:51 (twelve years ago)
Eric -- sorry, that's my point! IE, no broadcast split screen live of the thing. Also it would RUIN THE ILLUSION, MAN.
VG -- I thought you talked about that upthread already! The breakup that is.
― Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 7 May 2014 18:53 (twelve years ago)
...
and that proves that my brain would make a perfect colander
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 7 May 2014 18:54 (twelve years ago)
I never see the satire! The show is self-aware to a degree that's exceptional for the genre, and funnier than almost all of them, but RPDR is fundamentally a part of that genre. I almost think reality tv is impossible to satirize without an actual script, a la the Onion's "Sex House."
I think that a lot of cable channels, although they aren't bound by FCC regs, self-censor for the sake of advertisers.
― Call the Doctorb, the B is for Brownstein (Leee), Wednesday, 7 May 2014 19:15 (twelve years ago)
Ha, I see a little more clearly now, I took 'non over-the-air' to mean web clips/livestreams
― Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 7 May 2014 19:19 (twelve years ago)
PS I think Ru's got the Ozzie accent down because his longtime companion is an Ozzie cowboy.

Ha, that's right, I'd forgotten that.
― Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 7 May 2014 20:44 (twelve years ago)
is RPDR the Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman of reality television programming?

I'll settle for that.

Nice New Orleans newspaper story on Bianca

― Ned Raggett, Monday, 12 May 2014 14:25 (twelve years ago)
And that in turn links back to a 2002 story by the same writer about her
http://www.bestofneworleans.com/gambit/double-trouble/Content?oid=1240467
Which has this great bit:
One part Carol Burnett, one part Bob Mackie ("my idol!"), one part Don Rickles ("He made me pee"), but only a small sliver RuPaul ("not my cup of tea")
But which could also explain the opening of the new story too!

but I wont cry if its Adore
I love Adore too, and I think she's going to have a great career but imo it would be a bit insulting to Bianca if she won. I think Bianca really really deserves it. She just kicked ass the whole season, challenge after challenge. She wasn't even in the bottom three once. She definitely won the Race.
This finale reminds me a bit of Chad vs Sharon, the seasoned queen vs the fresh loveable new talent. Except this time around Bianca was 100 times more interesting than Chad, while Adore is not yet as polished and fully-developped as Sharon was.
― LeRooLeRoo, Tuesday, 13 May 2014 05:34 (twelve years ago)
Are you all aware of Sharon's fondness for throwing around the n-word?
― Call the Doctorb, the B is for Brownstein (Leee), Tuesday, 13 May 2014 06:23 (twelve years ago)
Yes; Sharon is kind of awful it turns out
― funny and lolexander (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 13 May 2014 11:09 (twelve years ago)
I kind of heard about that. Is she doing it to be controversial? She seems more intelligent than that. She was hilarious last night. Alaska and her were definitely the funniest.
