how often would you say you "check in" with yr pal twitter

oh me and the toot go way back

the extension of that is that typical user has to be ok with it being essentially non-participatory after their uncool and unfunny tweets fail to garner followers or comments or any attention at all really.

im essentially internet shy so im ok with being bad at twitter, but it'll always lag behind other services that are more flattering to the user imo.

you can gain an audience over time by interacting with others via tweeting at them

if you're not boring

and have something to say

and give people a reason to follow you

being not boring and having something to say are high bars though!

also a lot of work

its like a project

the follower count is prob twitters biggest impediment to a bigger audience, its too competitive

i've started tweeting at tech people, and it's fun to get favs and responses, but no one has followed me yet.

start w some lower tier bloggers lol

try responding to every tweet in your feed with something aggressively sarcastic. (i fantasize about doing this sometimes.)

it's funny though, for all the meritocracy (and there are people who are funny to a shockingly consistent extent), there's also a lot of people with tons of followers who basically tweet every banal faux-contrarian half-thought that comes into their thread.

a lot of people have bad taste, and lot of them follow bad people.

there is a large market for bad tweets.

i don't see how it's necessarily bad. if you have it open all day on the desktop it means you won't have to keep switching over to the notifications tab to see what's going on

Is it a pop up that pop up blockers block?

i would assume not, but i could be totally wrong. traditionally, those have dealt with separate pages launching in a separate window, while this, i think, would be something like a div appearing as part of the existing page.

lol yeah feel like u cld def block those it just a lil jquery prob but no one does cause theyre usually used for legit purposes and a lot of sites wouldnt really work if u did tho maybe someone cld write a specific plugin for twitter to just block the notifications idk, u cant turn them off in settings

i just got finished w a two week solitary meditation retreat and i will admit to an extended episodic day dream abt making an app that is like twitter except less of a bummer and getting fabulously wealthy

Someone in my program did one in Kathmandu and he said a girl started crying on the 3rd day and they had to give her back her passport and let her leave early

naw im in vt, yeah solitary retreat can be quite trying no one shd really do it until they have some solid experience w group retreat and daily practice under their belts, even then u might cry and demand yr passport back

Have no idea if anyone remembers me at ILX. Currently, I have several hundred followers on twitter. Thank you to everyone for the helpful advice given me from a while back. Special thanks to the person up thread (I can’t find the exact post now), who suggested I use #hashtags. The use of hashtags does seem to have helped me get some twitter followers. Unfortunately, according to this article at

hashtags (& ‘at-replies’) will probably be phased out.

(P.S. If anyone’s interested: I haven’t been able to post at ILX for the past few months because there have been quite a few things going on: 1 of my cats died & the other cat had some health issues & needed several vet visits. It’s been quite busy & stressful the past few months. I hope things settle down by this Autumn 2014.)
