i have had a twitter account for years but i have never written a single tweet, it's like a spare room with no furniture and a dead fly on the windowsill.

To say “no”.
otm, as is whoever said it has been product-managed to death. I get that they're saying "yes" because lots of these things are designed to make it easier for them to make money from it, but they're going to kill it in the process.

yeah one of the things twitter wants is for people to feel cool just following and not tweeting if they want but idk if thats ever really caught on, i dont think there are too many daily users who exhibit that behavior
this is me basically, i basically use it as news wire plus joke book though, very very few irl friends on it though, they're all on instagram which i'm not interested in really.
― balls, Thursday, 1 May 2014 14:54 (ten years ago) link
how often would you say you "check in" with yr pal twitter
― lag∞n, Thursday, 1 May 2014 14:56 (ten years ago) link
oh me and the toot go way back
― purposely lend impetus to my HOOS (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Thursday, 1 May 2014 15:11 (ten years ago) link
the extension of that is that typical user has to be ok with it being essentially non-participatory after their uncool and unfunny tweets fail to garner followers or comments or any attention at all really.
im essentially internet shy so im ok with being bad at twitter, but it'll always lag behind other services that are more flattering to the user imo.
― ryan, Thursday, 1 May 2014 15:23 (ten years ago) link
you can gain an audience over time by interacting with others via tweeting at them
― markers, Thursday, 1 May 2014 15:24 (ten years ago) link
if you're not boring
and have something to say
and give people a reason to follow you
being not boring and having something to say are high bars though!
― ryan, Thursday, 1 May 2014 15:24 (ten years ago) link
also a lot of work
― lag∞n, Thursday, 1 May 2014 15:25 (ten years ago) link
its like a project
the follower count is prob twitters biggest impediment to a bigger audience, its too competitive
― lag∞n, Thursday, 1 May 2014 15:26 (ten years ago) link
i've started tweeting at tech people, and it's fun to get favs and responses, but no one has followed me yet.

― markers, Thursday, 1 May 2014 15:29 (ten years ago) link
try responding to every tweet in your feed with something aggressively sarcastic. (i fantasize about doing this sometimes.)
― ryan, Thursday, 1 May 2014 15:29 (ten years ago) link
wld be a good experiment
― lag∞n, Thursday, 1 May 2014 15:30 (ten years ago) link
it's funny though, for all the meritocracy (and there are people who are funny to a shockingly consistent extent), there's also a lot of people with tons of followers who basically tweet every banal faux-contrarian half-thought that comes into their thread.
― ryan, Thursday, 1 May 2014 15:31 (ten years ago) link
thread = head
― ryan, Thursday, 1 May 2014 15:32 (ten years ago) link

another facebook feature
― markers, Thursday, 8 May 2014 15:18 (ten years ago) link
i don't see how it's necessarily bad. if you have it open all day on the desktop it means you won't have to keep switching over to the notifications tab to see what's going on
― markers, Thursday, 8 May 2014 15:19 (ten years ago) link
it might be more distracting to some
Is it a pop up that pop up blockers block?
― pick it up for ripple laser (onimo), Thursday, 8 May 2014 15:22 (ten years ago) link
i would assume not, but i could be totally wrong. traditionally, those have dealt with separate pages launching in a separate window, while this, i think, would be something like a div appearing as part of the existing page.
― markers, Thursday, 8 May 2014 15:33 (ten years ago) link
too bad lag00n's not here to tell me whether or not that's in the realm of plausibility
