the twitter eulogy does resonate, have felt like that for a while, but there are certainly ways of making your own twitter better. mostly it comes down to not being boring and careerist

This guy is a huge part of the problem. Trying to hide the scaffolding is what is making it so hard to use now

like i guess maybe its a ~twitter secret~ that you can't have an @ as your first character if you want others to see it, and that slows some newer people on the learning curve?
but i can't see an argument that one of the platform's most iconic characters whose inclusion in your 140 characters is necessary as part of the platform is just 'scaffolding'--its a necessary part of the body of your message that you're *directing* it at someone. just 'tagging' them like you might on fb is so much more passive and less meaningful imo. and does that make the hashtag scaffolding too?
― purposely lend impetus to my HOOS (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Wednesday, 30 April 2014 18:04 (ten years ago) link
i don't think they're going to remove either of those features, but i wouldn't be surprised if they make a move to make them more accessible, which isn't a bad idea esp. if they can come up with a way to do it without alienating their current userbase
― markers, Wednesday, 30 April 2014 18:05 (ten years ago) link
fuck the "user base"

just because you don't find twitter useful doesn't mean it's not useful. for me, instagram is a much less enjoyable platform
― markers, Wednesday, 30 April 2014 18:08 (ten years ago) link
what does "more accessible" mean there?
― chillin' on an "awesome pretzel" hoagie (DJP), Wednesday, 30 April 2014 18:08 (ten years ago) link
the @ and # are one of the big reasons companies fuck w twitter over facebook like when they throw a hashtag in corner of the screen of a tv show, its iconic, like there maybe be some usability problems w that but youre way past the point of no return
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 30 April 2014 18:09 (ten years ago) link
it's well known that people get on twitter and then don't know what to do
― markers, Wednesday, 30 April 2014 18:09 (ten years ago) link
there are official organisations and people who have been on twitter for years who seem not to realise this - ditto the "if you're a protected account, people who don't follow you can't see your @s of them"

sure but im sayin youre not gonna solve that by eliminating yr most core features youre going to have to find a better way, or maybe just admit youre a service thats not gonna ever be as big as facebook
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 30 April 2014 18:12 (ten years ago) link
the big problem for twitter might just be that it's not that essential to most people's lives. it's good if you're really interested in a bunch of things or want to be active in some community, and some people use it as a more private facebook of sorts, but beyond that, if you just want to interact with your friends facebook might be enough. or instagram. or imessage.
― markers, Wednesday, 30 April 2014 18:12 (ten years ago) link
xpost i don't think you have to necessarily "eliminate" it. might there be a way to even keep the @ stuff and make it easier for new users to get a handle on?
twitter knows its not a place it interact w yr friends, why it calls itself an info network not a social network
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 30 April 2014 18:13 (ten years ago) link
people USE it as that though
― markers, Wednesday, 30 April 2014 18:14 (ten years ago) link
some. not everyone. but some.
most people don't need want an "information network" or whatever in their lives.

― markers, Wednesday, 30 April 2014 18:18 (ten years ago) link
like, news shouldn't be the point but a minor feature from which discussions with your friends are born

i could see facebook having a resurgence of sorts if people trim their friendslists - no one ever completely abandoned it à la myspace because it always fulfilled a functional use (events, basically)

cause facebook is for looking at pictures of babies, the thing m/l that makes twitter hard to understand for n00bs is people use it in a lots of diff ways for lots of differnt things, if it was a pure information network whatever that would look like then it would be easy to understand

and as I found out over the weekend, how family keeps up with people who don't live close by. totally agree that if people trimmed their friends list, FB would be less terrible/more useful

once you "figure out" twitter, it's great--it's not always about making the user happy. make the user work
how many social networks are most people on? anecdotally, i see most people on facebook, a subset on instagram, a bunch on pinterest and twitter. i don't think people give that much of a fuck about news or information or whatever you want to call it, and they can just subscribe to the few things they're interested in on facebook and that's enough, obviating a need to sign up for twitter. a lot of us are on twitter but there are a lot more people out there who aren't and never will be
― markers, Wednesday, 30 April 2014 18:23 (ten years ago) link
I hate facebook and will never go on it - twitter is just low maintenance and simple enough for me. of course, their problem is they built this mildly amusing thing that doesn't make money, so it will be gone eventually as it hemorrhages users (which will happen to facebook too eventually)

yeah its an established progression at this point where during your userbase building phase you make the design good and easy so people will like it, then during your profit taking phase you fuck up the design in order to facilitate your money making
