I have the impression that HFS+ is seriously locked-in unless there's a really major change needed. They've modified it enough....

Some dick stole my ipad. I replaced it on Wednesday. I noticed today that the glass is cracked in the corner. What the fuck.

hope you got that applecare+, homie

a strange man (mh), Tuesday, 29 April 2014 01:23 (twelve years ago)

What are you looking for out of a new FS? Some ZFS-type magic?

Personally I'd love it if Dropbox-type services were standardized and you could easily plug them in at the OS level, but it doesn't seem like that's the direction iCloud is going.

ugh (lukas), Tuesday, 29 April 2014 05:23 (twelve years ago)

I'm not a ZFS-solves-all zealot, but at the very least I want the data/block checksumming and RAID stuff from ZFS as a start.

His accuracy is 45%. Let me know when he's better than flipping a coin.

is that including or excluding "scoops" from other sites that he's reporting on? because i think he addressed a point similar to this one on gruber's podcast.

also, for those on the sidelines, don't listen to our friend here -- gurman's work is worth following.

There's some intriguing speculation that as SSD drives get cheaper and faster it would be possible to further blur and/or reinvent the delineations between RAM and storage.

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 29 April 2014 20:31 (twelve years ago)

Hm. As they get cheaper, they generally have a lower number of erase cycles, which means that they would get destroyed pretty quickly if used for RAM. I guess they put a LOT of extra memory in SSDs to cope with cells getting worn out.

Ned what is that on top? Looks modem-y

stet, Wednesday, 30 April 2014 21:16 (twelve years ago)

I think it's a fan that attached to the back of the Mac. The fanless 128/512/Plus had power inverter boards that burned out over long-term exposure to heat.

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 1 May 2014 07:08 (twelve years ago)

it's explained in the comment, stet

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 1 May 2014 07:58 (twelve years ago)

stet, Thursday, 1 May 2014 09:52 (twelve years ago)

10.10 is gonna be nuts

markers, Thursday, 1 May 2014 13:45 (twelve years ago)

i hope it's not terrible because the ui of 10.9 is so much better than the ui of ios 6 and is in much less need of a redesign than that was

markers, Thursday, 1 May 2014 13:46 (twelve years ago)

do you think they'll ever get over "OS X" sounding cool and just move to "OS 11" when there's a major feature change?

a strange man (mh), Thursday, 1 May 2014 13:51 (twelve years ago)

i don't know. it doesn't seem like it. like, what would that change be? for them, os x is the same as ios insofar as it denotes the operating system itself. whatever comes after that is the modifier.

markers, Thursday, 1 May 2014 14:07 (twelve years ago)

you know? like, ios is the thing. os x is the thing.

markers, Thursday, 1 May 2014 14:08 (twelve years ago)

you're not one of those horrible people who pronounce the 'x' as a letter, are you, markers?

a strange man (mh), Thursday, 1 May 2014 14:09 (twelve years ago)

i don't think so

markers, Thursday, 1 May 2014 14:09 (twelve years ago)

it's a roman numeral, I mean

a strange man (mh), Thursday, 1 May 2014 14:11 (twelve years ago)

i totally am. it's more fun!

Nhex, Thursday, 1 May 2014 14:14 (twelve years ago)

os x gonna give it to ya!

Nhex, Thursday, 1 May 2014 14:14 (twelve years ago)

well, can't argue that

a strange man (mh), Thursday, 1 May 2014 14:15 (twelve years ago)

I keep thinking they're going to do something phenomenally silly, like "OS X 11.0"

a strange man (mh), Thursday, 1 May 2014 14:15 (twelve years ago)

I have been saying it like the letter X since 2001, thought that was common. how did The Jobs say it?
