The French authorities blew the statue up as the cult that erected it didn't have planning permission.

maybe you could say the islamic prohibition on idols stems from a lack of sensuality or unworldliness but I think a god who is totally trascendent, who has 99 names, is a more potent idea. idolatry (shirk) is the single unpardonable sin in islam, because it compromises the oneness of god. there's something sympathetic about that to me

In terms of statues I have to put up with almost every working day, this one's fairly terrifying:

Watching "Jason And The Argonauts" ruined me for life. I have never (WILL never) visit The Statue If Liberty and walking by that big statue at Rockefeller Center still gives me the creeps. I hate these things. Cool thread, though!

a monument to those valiant warriors who lost their battle with scoliosis the Wehrmacht. it may not be the biggest statue in the world, but it's certainly the biggest disappointed dad ("I died defending the Motherland against the Nazis, and what have you done with your day?"), and it must be extremely demoralizing to witness his great hulking disdain in person.

"Napoleon planned many urban regeneration projects for Paris and was particularly fond of monuments to his victories. He wanted to create a significant triumphal structure to demonstrate his military prowess and began the process of designing a 24 m (78 ft) bronze elephant. He planned to use the bronze from cannon captured in battle melted down and recast to create an imposing structure. A stairway would allow visitors to ascend one of the elephant's legs to an observation platform on its back.... The construction work stopped in 1815 after the defeat of Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo."

Giant naked cyclops next to E17 motorway in Belgium (you can see the motorway on the right in the second picture) - it has been there before, about 2 years ago, but was set alight then. Has now been put back but the owner of the forklift company, who is an art lover who did this because he wants to promote art in his industrial zone, is getting threatening letters again.
