xxxp I am very much delighted by the whimsical 'Jesus surprised by crane up the arse' statue, much less delighted by the big Buddha, mainly due to its gaudy colour than its melty fingers.

i'm looking at this. the bronze statue of Dizang goes by, I can tell from the adjacent statues that the staff the figure carries "doesn't count". it's the top of his head. ok.
but yet, when The Motherland Calls, suddenly the top of the sword is the line of measurement. now wait one god damn minute

― Karl Malone, Sunday, 11 September 2022 03:02 (three years ago)
I'd say the pedestal might not count, but then a certain green lady shows up.
― pplains, Sunday, 11 September 2022 03:27 (three years ago)
Yeah, it's a cool video but the measurements are weird. I was under the impression that the standard way of measuring statue height is to include staffs (staves?) etc but to not count pedestals - I get that would prob spoil the aesthetic of such a video, but not convinced that they've got things right the way they've done it.
Also, I somehow missed that Bolivia ripped off Christ the Redeemer and made a bigger one, and then (not included in that video) Poland ripped them both off and made an even bigger one again!

i posted upthread about four years ago, revisiting today... as yesterday, i took a trip to the Angel of the North. my lifelong megalophobia has certainly waned - i can deal with skyscrapers and all that - but i've always had the biggest dread around this one. you see it along the motorway as you're heading up to it; it's looming and dark, and seems so out of place - that's the real thing about this phobia for me: it's a psychogeographical thing - structure which doesn't seem to belong that just throws off the otherwise natural surroundings...
at any rate, i arrived there with a big sinking feeling, shutting my eyes as i approached... but to my surprise, it's actually... not so big, after all? i felt something as i stood under its loom, but it wasn't fear. freaky, for sure, but i suppose i felt more intrigued. faceless, almost light in nature despite its weathered finish and incredible weight. it's a breathtaking work of art, really.
i had a much, much bigger fright when visiting liverpool for the first time a couple of years ago: i was walking through the city centre with a friend, and looked up to realize i was at the base of st john's beacon...! my heart immediately sank to my bollocks and i hit the deck crouching! the height of that thing is much more intense... i spent the rest of the afternoon gazing at it from different angles around the city in awe.
this is the exact spot. https://www.euansguide.com/remote.axd/nucleusimagery.blob.core.windows.net%2Flive%2F4d22369c-5cc7-415e-8017-15a5cc599318?width=600&mode=cropthe eerie nature comes across much more in older photos, though...https://i2-prod.liverpoolecho.co.uk/incoming/article9385658.ece/ALTERNATES/s1227b/1_JS30072767.jpg

I know what you mean! I think!
Our tallest building, well, it's not really that tall, 45 stories or so. But there's this one hill nearby where as you climb up, the building slowly levitates into view, much like the moon does when it "rises."
