ugh (lukas), Tuesday, 15 April 2014 18:58 (twelve years ago)

it's been freaking me out all day that the most thorough and thoughtful coverage i've seen in the last year was in freakin' TechCrunch

That's a great article

J'ai toujours préféré la folie des passions à la sagesse de (Michael White), Tuesday, 15 April 2014 19:50 (twelve years ago)

It is great, but also highlights (in a million different ways) how difficult it will be to fix this problem.

schwantz, Tuesday, 15 April 2014 20:05 (twelve years ago)

Best article on the topic I've read yet. Thanks for sharing.

“…the war on tech workers—as opposed to tech companies or policies— is not really a “class war.” Rather, it is about one group of predominately white people complaining about a similar demographic group that likes many of the same restaurants, bars, street festivals, and Samba classes that they do—but who makes more money.”

randy shaw otm, it always seemed weird to me that tech workers have become this villain down there but it seems like it's been a pretty effective tactic? at least w/r/t the ellis act compensation, getting the mayor's attention, other promising legislation being proposed, etc

please please someone turn this into a political reality

How dare you tarnish the reputation of Turturro's yodel (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 17 April 2014 16:01 (twelve years ago)

Any idea how much added revenue that would generate?

schwantz, Thursday, 17 April 2014 16:04 (twelve years ago)

I have no idea. at the same time anything that chips away at that stupid law has to be a good thing.

How dare you tarnish the reputation of Turturro's yodel (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 17 April 2014 16:06 (twelve years ago)

yep.

schwantz, Thursday, 17 April 2014 16:14 (twelve years ago)

i guess that would be better than nothing, but yeah what a terrible law. has anyone ever come up with a reasonable transition strategy for a repeal? seems like it would be incredibly difficult to pull off both logistically and politically

hug niceman (psychgawsple), Thursday, 17 April 2014 16:51 (twelve years ago)

upthread someone mentioned something about having it only supply to someone's primary residence, which makes a ton of sense to me. i'm politically naive, but what does the counter-argument look like? "but what about the millionaires with second homes in Carmel?"

ugh (lukas), Thursday, 17 April 2014 17:35 (twelve years ago)

supply -> apply

brauch Kaffee

ugh (lukas), Thursday, 17 April 2014 17:36 (twelve years ago)

I think you'd need to have some pretty long (20 year?) transition period.

schwantz, Thursday, 17 April 2014 17:37 (twelve years ago)

"but what about the millionaires with second homes in Carmel?"

when you have pissed off millionaires and property rights advocates you don't need a rational argument

hug niceman (psychgawsple), Thursday, 17 April 2014 17:43 (twelve years ago)

upthread someone mentioned something about having it only supply to someone's primary residence, which makes a ton of sense to me.

the more i think about this the less it makes sense. why would this not just result in massive, widespread rent hikes?

hug niceman (psychgawsple), Thursday, 17 April 2014 18:08 (twelve years ago)

my assumption is that landlords are already gouging market rate renters as much as they can? idk though, good point.

ugh (lukas), Thursday, 17 April 2014 19:14 (twelve years ago)

yeah, even with the passing of prop 13 certain landlords hiked up rents for some reason! i could only imagine what it would be like if they took an actual financial hit

hug niceman (psychgawsple), Thursday, 17 April 2014 19:25 (twelve years ago)

To the extent it equalizes the tax base between newer and older buildings, I guess it would lower the rent on newer buildings and raise it on older ones, assuming the total amount raised from property taxes is held constant. If the amount raised from property taxes is increased, then presumably other forms of income such as sales taxes could be decreased.

o. nate, Thursday, 17 April 2014 20:33 (twelve years ago)

landlords are already gouging market rate renters as much as they can? Gouging is a leading word but, yes, of course, landlords are maximising their profits as much as the market allows.

The counter-argument might be made by the building trades and their overlords but the public good of having a saner tax base and investing it in education is insuperable.

When you have a general consensus across party (and ind) lines, why tf would you not do this? Oligarchy?

J'ai toujours préféré la folie des passions à la sagesse de (Michael White), Thursday, 17 April 2014 21:10 (twelve years ago)

sales taxes could be decreased.

So not going to happen

so my daughter's kindergarten teacher (who we have not had the best relationship with tbf) just told us she is leaving the school/moving out of town at the end of this year, because she can't afford to live here anymore. she had been forced to move/had her rent raised three times in the past year.

two weeks pass...

On a lighter note, my buddy's movie doc is showing in the San Francisco area as part of a film festival:

Catch "Led Zeppelin Played Here" at Oakland School for the Arts on June 8th at 5pm or at Roxy Theater in SF on June 14th at 9pm.

Directed by Jeff Krulik (Heavy Metal Parking Lot), this documentary takes a look at the epic and possibly mythical 1969 performance Led Zeppelin gave in the gym of the Wheaton, MD Youth Center in front of 50 confused teenagers. Krulik tracks down just about everyone who might have been there that Monday night, which also happened to be the evening of Richard Nixon's Presidential Inauguration.

Fremont Diner! I've always gone for breakfast but their food is so good I'll lay money that their lunch food is great too. But if you're brunchy, their fried chicken & waffles is ridic good.
