Guys, I didnt say "sexually attracted to"

Just pointing out that blanket statements about groups of people based on physical characteristics are sort of erm how u say "problematic"

Fwiw I was joking upthread, would never bring kids to a bar

I tend to avoid redheads with sunburnt knees as a rule

It's less the kids and more the fuckin noise

Yeah, stupid kids interrupting my silent contemplation at the pin-drop quiet corner bar. It's all downhill from there. First come the kids, then come the jukeboxes, then comes the beer... Oh, wait, it starts with the beer, sorry. First comes the beer, then comes the drunks, then comes the ... huh, you're right, drunk people are loud, too. Hmm ... last comes the kids?

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 13 April 2014 17:57 (ten years ago) link

Tbh, I don't think I've ever seen kids in a bar. And when I do, it's usually brief and for some good reason.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 13 April 2014 17:58 (ten years ago) link

Start threads for all those other things and i'll pop in to protest them, had you a point besides?

also wtf move somewhere with better pub options

It reaalllllly grinds my gears when the surgeon brings his kids into the operating room.

Generally speaking, the worst place people can bring their kids is with them to my house.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 13 April 2014 18:21 (ten years ago) link

bringing your kids to the grocery store is the worst, what are they even doing, they don't even shop, they just drive around in those orange cars yelling and getting in people's way.

Bringing yr kids on to public transport is the worst, with a special hell reserved for u if its a plane

Course i should stress that there're kids and then there're *kids* i mean just kids are ok anywhere rly

My dad took me to bars all the time.

It seems like lex is upset about not being able to accost parents and kids. Are parents asking him if he isn't delighted? I never encounter this anywhere ever. No one solicits reactions from me about their kids.

As a gay man with many straight friends w/kids -- hung out with two couples and their newborns last night -- I've never once felt social pressure to love their adorableness. On the contrary, both couples last night ordered lots of drink and were at pains to avoid inconveniencing me.

Oh, man, the worst is at stores where the kids are encouraged to push around their own little carts. So there you are, trying to shop, and you have to avoid all these little satellites zipping around the aisles, circling the mothership, leaving their little cart places, knocking shit over, dumping their own carts over. I refuse to let my kids do that, because I don't want to be part of the problem.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 13 April 2014 20:52 (ten years ago) link

you dont, strictly speaking, have to avoid them, if you take care to act like you just didnt see them

I believe the children are our future. Drink and pint and let them lead the way. Show them all the vomit you possess inside.

Jeff, Sunday, 3 August 2014 21:18 (nine years ago) link

Should have said "hey! Watch it!" And put the barstool in your own stroller and left.

Douchy parents decide to have brunch with their one year old and take over half the place with their accessories. On the way out, the pen they have to dad to sign the check is out of ink. Then he drops a bag full of toys all over the floor. At least he has the courtesy and dignity to look shamed while picking the stuff up.

is this empty sanitism (darraghmac), Saturday, 9 August 2014 19:55 (nine years ago) link

i feel the same way abt this as i do smoking in bars. some bars have smoking. if u are down with that go to those bars. if u are down with kids in bars go to those bars. hopefully there is no overlap.

but i mean for real the subset of bars that most parents would take their kids into is surely very small, leaving a wide range of non-kid-friendly bars available for the child-averse and/or registered sex offenders.

how's life, Saturday, 9 August 2014 22:06 (nine years ago) link

You know, we often would take our kid / kids to restaurants, and you'd see other people go 'oh god its a baby' or whatever age she/they were but they never created or carried on, nd you'd see those same people visibly relax.

Yeah, we were lucky.

Only time I can remember was when Alice was given her kiddy pizza, a flat round marguerita , took one look at our rectangular adult veggie one and spoke in her full voice "I WANT THAT ONE' to which I replied "I don't blame you"

Anyway, what was the question?

Mark G, Saturday, 9 August 2014 22:13 (nine years ago) link

Signing the check! That is quaint.

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Saturday, 9 August 2014 22:46 (nine years ago) link

Like I mentioned upthread: been taking kids to bars since they were newborn. No problems. It's the parents who sometimes misbehave. The ones who do, of course, don't usually take their kids to bars...because they don't usually drink.

it's less bars than pubs here, which have outdoor beer gardens for the smokers... I feel bad (don't object, but am bothered) by the fact this ONE spot I can still go to drink and smoke cigs, has kids present. and you get glares from the parents for the smoking. come on! we're a dying (lol) breed. give us something.

I checked Snoops , and it is for real (Trayce), Sunday, 2 August 2015 04:52 (eight years ago) link

It's pretty easy with Ivy. She's 4.5 months old so she just hangs out in the carrier strapped to one of us while we drinky drink drink (usually sleeping). We go during off hours though, usually a Sunday afternoon to a place we know won't be crowded or annoying.

More difficult at 20 months, for sure. All she wants to do is walk around and go say hello to other people or try and tend bar. We still limit her bar time to non-peak hours, and usually we can only get an hour's worth of drinking in before she's had enough. Pretty soon to get our drinking in, I think we'll have to break out the distracto-iPad.

"i'm guessing you don't have elderly people in your life" is def one of the most annoying things people w/ elders in their life say, esp in that superior tone it usually comes in

damn right i don't and there's a reason for that. i don't like old people or being around them. i'm not going to be overtly displeased with old people in bars (well, elder-friendly bars, some bars would be just wrong) but i reserve the right to prefer elderly people elsewhere and bitch about it privately afterwards. i don't think "enjoying the company of strangers' elders" should be a general expectation. i don't like the company of obnoxious adults either and pick the places i socialise to avoid them where possible and basically 90% of old people have the same effect.

old people that i actually know are slightly easier to tolerate, i guess.
